  3. If Dwayne Johnson was the face of the WWE during the 'Attitude Era', then John Cena was the posterboy for the company when they decided to become more kid friendly and move away from all the blood and gore, although he did make his debut amidst all of it. He dominated as the main man of the business for over a decade, promoted the WWE not only in the USA but also internationally. Hell, he even learned Mandarin to share a cultural bond with his Chinese following when he would visit the country for work. His words, 'Hustle, Loyalty, Respect' have sold millions and millions of t-shirts, wristbands and all the other merchandise WWE wanted to sell and turned more and more people, especially young kids into wrestling fans who would grow into becoming a dedicated part of the so called WWE Universe. Essentially, hiring John Cena was one of the biggest, most successful investments the WWE made in the 21st century. © Reuters However, the deal would not have worked in favour of either side had Vince McMahon released Cena in November 2002 after he struggled to make a sustainable impression amongst the spectators with his 'Ruthless Aggression' storyline. In a video shared by the WWE, Cena candidly shares the series of events that led to him adapting the 'Doctor of Thuganomics' gimmick and never looked back ever since. “The WWE used to make a series of cuts around late November and around mid May,” says the 13-time WWE champion. “I was told that I would be getting my release in the Christmas cuts because it just wasn't working. “They gave it to me on a silver platter, 'John Cena - Ruthless Aggression' and I failed, I messed it up. “It was my last European tour and I think I was in a mixed tag match - this is how well it did not go,” he remembers. “I think I was just there to maybe have just one last time in the ring but I was on my way out. “We travel as a community and in the same bus and in the back I could hear a bunch of guys, Rikishi and Rey Mysterio, leading the charge and they were all freestyling just to pass the time,” Cena recalls. “It was a long bus ride… and I just dove right in.” “It (rapping) resonated with me.” On paper, the idea of walking into the ring with a massive medallion hanging low from his neck, a cap turned backwards and uncanny hand signs on his way, yeah, nobody would have thought that this gimmick would have worked out for anybody but for some odd reason it did and it trampolined Cena to the superstardom that he now enjoys. I am sure it had something to do with luck but the man deserves all the credit in the world to work for himself with his back against the wall and make it big. View the full article

  5. As social distancing has become a common affair for us for the past few weeks now due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we are constantly hunting for ways to kill the boredom. During such a time period, if you are someone whose skin is prone to annoying pimples, we completely understand how this lockdown must have affected your routine. But, if you are starting to go crazy with the breakouts and want to control it while you are home, now is the perfect time to do so. Armed with handy tips, this is how you should go about getting rid of your acne: 1. Do CTM © iStock Living with pimples can be really annoying and painful. Since you are self-quarantining and so is your dermatologist, there's actually an easy way to go about this. Start with the basics. Stick to a CTM ritual, which is cleansing, toning and moisturising at home. Wash your face with a cleanser and then ask your mom for some rose water. Apply some moisturiser as it will help lock your skin away from dirt and grime. This is how you start. 2. Exfoliate Three Times A Week © iStock The beads in a scrub can help you get rid of debris and dirt and give a deeper cleanse to your skin. Scrubbing also reduces the chances of more pimples and clogged pores. But since it is a deep cleansing method, it should be done once a week. If you don't have a scrub at home, make good use of coffee and honey to scrub your face. Try it out. 3. Control Oily Skin With A Face Mask © iStock A face mask made with natural ingredients is a way to control the excess oil that wrecks havoc on your skin. A face mask will help keep your skin soft and supple. Also, it will help you kill some time and also make you feel better whilst letting you have a breakout-free skin. 4. Use A Face Gel © iStock To prevent and eliminate acne, applying face gel and going to sleep while it does wonders for your skin, is something that should add to your routine, amid social distancing. This method is less aggressive as the gel stays on your skin and controls redness and skin irritation. One of the best remedies to date is aloe vera gel. So if you do own a plant, good luck and if you don't, you still have other remedies to try. 5. Popping Your Pimples © iStock Self quarantining is probably the best time for all overthinkers out there right now. Given that there's a tendency to touch things more than usual and since pimples are really tempting to do so, your hands are bound to reach out for them. Stop that then and there, as the more you trigger it, the chances of scarring will be higher. Also, don't forget the Coronavirus rules and wash your hands. View the full article
  6. From Copa America, Euros, Tokyo Olympics to T20 World Cup, the year 2020 was earmarked for its promise of bringing the iconic sporting events to the fore. But, despite all the necessary preparations, the sports industry and fans have been handed a major blow by the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). With 5,40,828 confirmed cases and 24,293 deaths so far, the fast-spreading virus has become a major threat to mankind. With travel restrictions, quarantine camps and curfews all around, the fast-spreading virus continues to heckle normalcy and traumatise people across the globe. The sporting world isn't alienated to the repercussions of the scary epidemic either. Whether it's the NBA season, IPL or football leagues across the globe, all have been suspended as the world continues to combat the epidemic. Amongst the most-anticipated sporting events this year, the likes of Euros and Copa America have already been pushed back by a year. And, after much deliberation, even the Tokyo Olympics recently took a hit. On 24 March, the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) announced the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. â IOC MEDIA (@iocmedia) March 25, 2020A detailed discussion between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Japanese government led to the decision of cancelling this year's Tokyo Games, which have been rescheduled for the summer of 2021. The IOC in its statement claimed that the Games will be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020, but no later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes and everyone involved in the Olympics. The decision, which took a while, has been hailed by all given the situation at hand. But, it isn't the first time the Games have been disrupted. Since the opening of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, the mega event has been cancelled on three occasions: once during World War I (1916) and twice during World War II (1940, 1944). The COVID-19 outbreak marks another rare occasion when the Games have been rescheduled. However, the rich Olympic history has witnessed numerous sad world events which should have ideally led to the cancellation of the Games, but, unfortunately, it didn't. Here's a look at those rare moments of history: 1936 Games In Germany © Reuters Germany was supposed to host the 1916 Olympics and had even built an impressive 30,000-seat stadium in Berlin for the sporting spectacle. But, with the outbreak of war in 1914, the 1916 Games were cancelled. Four years later, the Games, hosted by Belgium, became the first of its kind where a country's invitation was withdrawn. Blamed for staring World War I, the German contingent was not only banned from the 1920 Games, but also from the 1924 Olympics. It was in 1936 when Germany finally got an opportunity to host the Olympics, this time under the Nazi flag. Despite calls of boycott amid a Nazi regime intent on using sport for Adolf Hitler's propaganda including the theories of racial superiority, the 1936 Berlin Games were allowed to go on. 1968 Games In Mexico © Reuters Since its inception in 1894, the IOC has laid claims to being an apolitical and neutral body with the mission to promote international peace and understanding through sport. But, the international body has found itself in a bit of trouble every now and then by turning a blind eye to catastrophic events in order to ensure the Games go on. And, the 1968 Olympics in Mexico is a prime example. Ten days before the opening of Summer Games in Mexico City, the government forces gunned down an undetermined number of university and high school students who had gathered in the Tlatelolco section to protest against Gustavo Diaz Ordaz's ruling party. But, despite the human rights violation caused by the ruling government's extreme use of forces to suppress political opposition, the IOC didn't make sound and the Games went on. 1972 Games In Germany © Reuters If the beforementioned instances don't make you cringe, the fact that even the darkest chapter of Olympic history couldn't stop the Games would surely get you riled up. The tensions between Israel and Palestine found its international spotlight in 1972. An armed group of Palestinian terrorists attacked the Israeli compound at the Olympic Village in Munich. Two Israeli athletes were killed in the attack and another nine were being held hostage by the terrorists. A standoff ensued which eventually led to the sad demise of all nine remaining Israeli athletes as the entire world watched from the sidelines. It remains one of the biggest tragedies in the history of Olympics, but, frustratingly, the death of 11 Israeli athletes during the event wasn't enough to cancel the Games. After a two-day suspension, the Munich Games went on as if nothing happened. 1996 Games In USA © Reuters The Summer Olympics, also referred to as the Centennial Olympic Games, came to Georgia's capital Atlanta in 1996. The Games began with a cheerful ceremony on 19th July and continued to enthral the spectators. But, on 27th July, Eric Rudolph, a convicted American terrorist, planted three pipe bombs at the Centennial Olympic Park. Despite receiving a tip and arriving on the scene early, the bomb squad was moments away from investigating the suspicious package when the bombs detonated just minutes into the evacuation of the general public. The blast directly killed 2 persons, another one later died of a heart attack and injured 111 others. A few hours later, Billy Payne, the president of the Atlanta organizing committee said: "The spirit of the Olympic movement mandates that we continue". On the other hand, Olympic officials, citing the example of the 1972 Munich Games, claimed that the 17-day competition will continue. View the full article
  7. With India being in lockdown until at least the 15th of April, if not longer, there are some key decisions that need to be made. After youâre done with all the ones that ensure your safety and sustenance, come to the smaller but somewhat equally important things. What do you do about stuff like your hair and beard? © iStock Beard, understandably so, is something that most of us can actually take care of ourselves. Our hair, on the other hand, because it takes a little longer to grow and is more conspicuous when some mistakes are made, is something that we do not want to take risks with unless an expert is involved. Now, if youâre confident and brave enough, you can try cutting your hair, by watching a few YouTube videos. Or else, you can actually start preparing your hair for that ultimate man bun that will surely be a huge hit once this quarantine malarkey is done. © iStock But how exactly do you prepare your hair for a man bun? What exactly do you do to prepare your hair? Read on, and take notes. Regular Coconut Oil Champis © iStock You would want to make things easy for your hair as well as yourself. Proper champis or massages act as the base on which the health of your hair and your scalp depends, and if you choose to go for coconut oil, over those fancy formulated hair oils, you will be doing yourself a favour. Try to massage your hair at least once a week. Coconut oil has a lot of nutrients that make the roots of your hair strong, as well as the strands itself. Plus, it locks just the right amount of moisture in your scalp which makes it even healthier. Hair & Scalp Hygiene © iStock Other than keeping your scalp and hair clean, it is paramount that you keep your hair as clean as possible. No matter how exquisite or expensive your hair care routine is if you cannot maintain proper hair and scalp hygiene all your effort is wasted. Having said that, do not start aggressively shampooing your hair every day. Use a shampoo that suits your hair type, as well as your skin type. Also, try to go for products that are free of sulfates, alcohol and other harmful chemicals. And no matter what, if you are shampooing, always follow it up with a good conditioner, which again, suits your hair. Brush Instead Of Combing © iStock A hairbrush, because it is softer on your scalp and hair, is always better for you when compared to a fine-toothed comb. Combs tend to cause far more hair breakage and are not able to massage the scalp when you style your hair. Furthermore, using a comb puts stress on your roots. A hairbrush, especially the ones with thin, densely packed bristles is actually softer on your hair. Plus, they deal with more hair in every stroke, which gives it a nice texture and fill. Brushes are also more effective in clearing up loose strands of hair or debris from your scalp. Maintain The Moisture Of Your Hair © iStock Given where we may be headed, shampooing every day is not actually possible, at least for us men. Therefore the best next alternative is washing your hair with warm water, carefully. With that being said, you have to ensure that the water isnât scalding hot, or else youâll end up damaging your hair, or even your scalp. And try to keep your scalp and hair moisturised. Apart from coconut oil massages, you can make some easy changes in your habits that help in retaining moisture, like massaging with aloe vera sap or cutting down your caffeine. View the full article
  8. Coronavirus has forced a lot of countries to close their borders, preventing anybody to enter. Needless to say, a lot of countries are under lockdown, which means people can't really leave their homes unless it's an emergency. If you had a vacation planned during the next couple of months, it's quite unfortunate because it's definitely not happening. But we all can use a vacation, which is why I thought I'd tell how you can take a virtual vacation & travel the world from your couch. Google Street View In order to use Google's Street View, you don't even have to install anything else on your phone. I am sure we all have Google Maps on our phones that is unless you've been living under a rock. Anyway, simply open Google Maps and type a location that you'd wish to take a stroll through. © MensXP Now, just tap the on the layer button on the top right below the search bar and enable the Street View layer. Now, you'll see a blue line on any street that's available with first-person navigation. You can just tap on the blue line and enter the Street View mode. Yes, it's not as good as walking the streets by yourself, but the Street View feature is the closest thing to taking a stroll around, say, the Eiffel tower. Enjoy 360 View From Inside A Particular Building Not all the places are tracked by Google's Street View cars. So if you don't find a particular location marked by the blue lines on Google Maps, then we suggest you download Google's dedicated Street View app. With Street View, you'll be able to access categorized collections and user-submitted 360 images from all over the world. Anybody can contribute content for this app as long as it hasn't been recorded by someone else. With this, you can in fact get a 360 view of a particular building like, say, a museum. Become A Voyager With Google Earth © Reuters Google Earth has a mode called Voyager that lets you travel in time and space by opening a directory of all of Google's special collections. You get things like per country highlights, collections based on different themes like airports, Unesco World Heritage Sites, and more. You also get a detailed write up to help you understand the history of that particular place and a whole lot more. This is definitely something that I am going to be using a lot during this lockdown period. View the full article

  10. From traffic jams to roads being empty, the entire paradigm of how we used to see our lives on a daily basis has changed, owing to the Coronavirus outbreak. Everything has come to a standstill and after PM Narendra Modi announced 'Janta-Curfew', then lockdown, we have no option but to stay back at our homes. For most of staying in urban sectors, we are used to taking support from domestic help (you can bash me for sure) and now, things have changed as there's no domestic help at all. I belong to a family where there are no gender disparities when it comes to sharing household chores but then this is not the case with ever family obviously. Some families still sadly follow redundant patriarchal rules where a woman is expected to take care and serve the household. Considering the situation we are in, it's for both men and women to take up the responsibilities of their homes and divide among themselves, equally. I decided to conduct a survey on Facebook wherein I asked if men have stepped in to share responsibilities considering the fact that both men and women are equally involved in taking the charge of their homes. © Facebook/Apoorva Nijhara I asked both men and women to engage in a conversation and tell me how they are managing during this lockdown. I wasn't sure if people would be even responding but on the contrary, I got more than 500 responses in less than a day. So I have picked up a few as I couldn't mention all of them and I am also keeping their accounts, intact, as they sent me. A few women came forward and appreciated that men in their families have actually stepped up in terms of taking responsibilities and have even mentioned that they have started to empathize with them even more. Sharing a few accounts here: Arpita Ashara Sood My dad has become the true hero of the house. I live with my husband, in-laws, and kids and stay just 8kms away from my parents' house but because of lockdown, I haven't been able to visit my parents. My mother has cancer and can only do things in her restricted capacity. Well, my father has taken the charge completely in the absence of domestic help and is doing all household chores. He is cleaning the house, cooking, and even helping bathe my mom who requires assistance as she has health complications. With no maids or assistance at the age of 69, my father is doing a lot and has gone beyond his comfort zone. He has his own medical complications including high BP and arthritis. I am unable to help them due to the lockdown but I really appreciate what he is doing for my mother. © Arpita Sood Anjana Anand Yes, my man is helping totally in spirit. He is working overtime from home because being a Finance guy- Closing month. However, for his coffee breaks, he takes Colin and makes sure he cleans at least two surfaces. Makes his coffee by himself, goes for essentials shopping (he rarely does that). Most important, he is suddenly so compassionate and non-demanding. Shruti Hrishikesh Bhattacharya First of all, I would like to thank you for this initiative. In the morning he helps me with making breakfast, like chopping and all.. then doing breakfast together is the happiest part as we didn't get time in the office days. Secondly, we clean the house together, he brooms the house and I mop. I make the lunch and he washes the utensils. While I prepare lunch, he downloads the movie that we can watch together. After this, he makes tea in the evening and I make dinner. So, we have equally shared the responsibilities. Deepali Shukla My hubby has been leading the way for us to keep the house clean. He has to work from home and ensure BCP for his company works flawlessly. He washes utensils while taking calls. I am the cook and he is the cleaner of the house for now. He believes nothing is big or small. It's not only now with lockdown but before too, he has always stood up and helped with household chores. He just needs a nudge sometimes. Aastha Ratra My husband has never done anything around the house primarily because there have been house helps always, now he is washing utensils, brooming, mopping, cooking and whatnot. It's amazing to see your husband transform into a true partner when it matters. Even children are contributing to each and every task in the house. I hope it's just not the initial excitement. There's a long road ahead. Tanu Ahuja I don't think men in my family have hesitated in helping me with around the house. From bed tea to loading the washing machine, to staking the dishwasher, mopping, sweeping, dusting, cooking... we finish it all together and retire to our rooms... To attend our virtual offices and school assignments. I think together we are more sorted than ever before. Both my son and my husband have been sharing responsibilities with me equally. © Tanu Ahuja © Tanu Ahuja Vandana Singh My husband claims that he now knows the difference between moong daal and masoor daal, how clothes need to be folded after ironing, how much soap is enough for utensils- better than me!!!! I'm not complaining... sitting back with my coffee and letting him enjoy his moments of fame. Then, there were a few men who messaged me saying that they have been proactive and also reinforced the message of equality. Here are a few responses that I got from men: Mohit Vats I never did household chores ever in my life but doing it now .. learning new skills every day and enjoying it but one thing is for sure whenever my maid comes back, I'll bow down to her as it's not easy what she does. Rajat Grover I am really enjoying this time of lockdown. just because I am able to help my family - my mom and my wife in the daily chores of the home. Cleaning utensils in Kitchen Or Brooming & Mopping, Washing Clothes, etc are almost Equally challenging for my Wife as for Me. So we are taking it Bang On together !!! Debasish Roy I grab every opportunity to work around the house. It's my house too, so it's my job too. Of course, I take my wife's permission before I do anything around the house because she is the manager in-charge and masterminds everything. She has a schedule and I don't want to interrupt that. My work forces me to travel so every hour spent with my family and participating in household work is a blessing for me. Then, there was one response from Rahul Shobhana Banerjee that indeed challenged every tiny bit of the stereotypes our society has. He shared, “We all have a story we are proud of and here is the one which I wanted to share for a long time. Born in a middle-class family, I and my wife have always been surrounded by judgments, benchmarks and the pool of expectations. We both coming together was a choice itself but quite challenging as I and my wife have an age difference of 5 years. You must be thinking its normal, right? I was talking about my wife being 5 years older to me which had raised many eyebrows like it does when they come across the fact that I am the “ Man at the kitchen “ my world revolved around my kitchen and art of culinary, wherein every moment my partner has been the biggest critic and connoisseur of my passion and my wife is the “Wo-Man of the house” who runs the house and calls the shots. But life has never been more blessed as we know we are true to what we are best at and to each other. Even in the lockdown, we are like the pillar of strength for each other.” But then, there were responses that did shatter me wherein women said that they aren't getting relief as men in their houses aren't ready to share responsibilities. Sapna Patheja I think my husband is the only one who is not helping at all.....I don't have a maid now so doing cleaning utensils cooking all on my own....have two kids and the school has started sending work online so taking out time to teach them also as no tutors while my husband is on mobile in front of the tv on bed whole day.....For the first time, I asked him to help in utensils as my son was getting confused in a maths question and was calling me again and again but was refused clearly. Karishma Shroff She shared a meme wherein she has shown how some men are during the lockdown. © Karishma Shroff After reading all the responses, I, in fact, felt sad seeing how women are thanking men for helping them during the lockdown as this shouldn't be just restricted to this very period. Household chores should be divided equally anyway. I was also happy to see men accepting that they have been sharing responsibilities and understanding the real meaning of equality. I also want to call to those men who are still not sharing responsibilities thinking the household chores are only done by women. It's time that we contribute equally and not let one gender take the entire pressure. It's time that we become the in Ki and Ka in real lives where gender roles are not specified. 11. There's a reason why Shahid Kapoor is called the style god of Bollywood. He knows exactly how to put together off-duty outfit whenever he steps out on the streets. This is courtesy his stylist Anisha Jain. However, one thing that you should know about Shahid is the fact that when he is not acting or spending time with his family, he's collecting some zany pairs of sneakers for his sneaker collection back home. In fact, he is loyal when it comes to his sneakers, we know this because he keeps a handful of beaters (sneakers that he loves more than the rest) in rotation with his outfits, that he repeats ever so often. So, here's a list of sneakers from Shahid Kapoor's closet that we are certain are his favourite. 1. Dolce & Gabbana Two-Tone Super Kings Shahid is quite often seen wearing the Two-Tone Super King sneakers from Dolce & Gabbana. © Viral Bhayani The silhouette presents itself with a mirrored metallic leather upper with contrasting details, along with the serrated edges that make for a superbly modern aesthetic. © ssense The sneakers come for the price of 795 Euros, which when converted to INR comes around Rs 63,000. 2. Further, the lace-up detailing complements the frontal perforations. The sneaker comes for the price of 1370 dollars which come down to Rs 1,01,500 approximately. 6. White Salomon Edition Bamba 2 Sneakers From 11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi Another silhouette from 11 by Boris Bidjan Saberi. The rubber sole, along with the construction, adds to the retro vibe of the sneaker. © Viral Bhayani These sneakers from Gucci retail for about $790 which comes down to Rs 60,000 approximately. © ssense 8. Fusion By Maison Margiela Talking about distressed sneakers like no other, this one definitely tops the list. © Viral Bhayani The silhouette called 'Fusion' looks like they've been picked up from a trash heap of toxic waste. But this aesthetic is exactly what makes it stand out. © ssense The silhouette retails at Rs 1.2 lakhs approximately. View the full article
  12. Best friend, sibling, distant relatives and quirky colleagues - every good screenplay comes with a wide variety of characters to flesh out the lead role's journey through a film. Bollywood's history is lined with actors who've made a name by immersing themselves in a role, sometimes so much so that the role becomes synonymous with them - think Amjad Khan in Sholay, for example. Today, Bollywood's best boast of some of the most incredible and intense performances ever captured on film - here's a few who did such a good job with their roles, they've outshone the main leads on the films they've worked with. Manoj Bajpayee as Bhiku Mhatre, Satya Possibly one of the greatest castings in Bollywood history, Bajpayee's performance in Ram Gopal Varma's critically acclaimed crime thriller was nothing short of iconic, but did you know that the actor himself wasn't confident about the role? “Everybody used to feel so excited about my performance but I wasn't sure if we are doing it right,” he said, nearly 20 years after the film. “That feeling of unsureness was always looming large because no one of the film industry was making this kind of a film.” Vijay Raaz as Somayajulu, Delhi Belly Raaz has become a go-to choice for voice overs, and perhaps the best example of his gruff baritone is in this incredible black comedy from 2011. Perfect comedic timing, the ability to absolutely steal every scene he's in and a script that props it all up - if only we had more villains like him in the industry. Arshad Warsi as Shakti, Hulchul I'll admit I've got a soft spot for Priyadarshan films, and while the over-the-top drama and hilarious gags from Hulchul make it a prime candidate for my favourite one, a large reason why is Warsi's amazing performance. He's jumpy, completely owns his role and outshines lead Akshaye Khanna in every scene they both are in - although reportedly, Warsi had been disappointed with his role during the shoot, and resigned himself to commit to a 100% performance. He sure did. Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Shaikh, The Lunchbox It had to be either Paan Singh Tomar or this - one of the most interesting matchups in the history of Bollywood has been Siddiqui opposite Irrfan Khan, and given that the two were roommates during their days as struggling actors gives huge weight to their scenes together. However, Irrfan acts like he always does, and Siddiqui - instead of his gung-ho gangster or small-time crook typecasts, absolutely nails the role of a bumbling office salesman. Saif Ali Khan as Langda Tyagi, Omkara Another fantastic Shakespearean adaptation of Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara brought together an epic cast - yet the surprise standout remains Saif Ali Khan in the role of the crafty, ruthless gangster Langda Tyagi. After a series of light-hearted roles, watching Saif pull off this intense performance was an absolute treat - and remains one of the best performances of his life. Pankaj Tripathi as Principal Srivastava, Nil Battey Sannata Similar to Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi's reputation as an antagonist in film is legendary - but watching the actor's rich, lovingly crafted performance as an upstanding school principal betrays the long years he spent developing his skills as a theatre actor. 'Nil Battey Sannata' is my story,” the actor said to Times of India. “It says that one should keep dreaming, stay focused and the dreams will come true.” Annu Kapoor as Dr. Baldev, Vicky Donor Famous for his roles and captivating talent as a TV show host, Annu Kapoor blew expectations out of the park with his work in Vicky Donor, splitting audiences' sides with his portrayal of an eccentric fertility clinic doctor. Apparently the role was first offered to Boman Irani - while we think he would have done the role justice, Kapoor's work was just the extra kick of humour that the film needed - making Ayushmann Khurrana's debut a truly special and iconic movie. 13. Amid the novel coronavirus outbreak, people have been asked to self-quarantine themselves in order to stop the virus from spreading any further. The very first step taken by the government was to shut down all the gyms, theatres, schools, malls and all the other public places where people could gather in large numbers. Itâs already been more than two weeks that people are locked in their homes with no physical contact from the outside world. Now, PM Narendra Modi has also announced a 21-day lockdown which means we have been restricted to our homes for a longer duration now. Well, people are also working from home and with gyms being shut, their movements are also restricted. So, the only thing to keep your body active is to either work out or burn off calories in doing the household chores. People on social media platforms are complaining that they are lacking the motivation or are finding it difficult to figure out a few easy and handy exercises that can be done at home. In order to address their problems, I got in touch with Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawanâs personal trainer Prashant Sawant and asked him to share some of the easy exercises that can be done by anyone at home. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@prashantsixpack) He told us, âI have built my career on the basis of repetitions so I advise you should start with a minimum of 20 reps in one set. Let me tell you that anyone can do exercises at home without weights.â Here are 5 exercises you can do as advised by Prashant : â1. Surya Namaskars When I started, I used to do like 100 in one go. But, I would suggest starting with 10 as a beginner. 2. Squats You can totally do squats as they will help you burn those extra calories quickly. 3. Pull-Ups You can have something to hang on to, and easily incorporate pull-ups in your daily regime. 4. Planks and Whole Abs Workout This is the time you can focus on strengthening your core muscles. You can do planks and crunches staying at home. 5. Cleaning and Focusing On Household Chores I have been taking care of my kid and playing with him and also cleaning the house and this is helping in burn calories. I would suggest to keep yourself busy with something.â Furthermore into the conversation, I told him that people who werenât actively involved with working out earlier at the gyms have now become even more lethargic given the current situation. So, I asked him for his suggestion for the people who are completely inactive during this lockdown. On this, he told me, âFor all the people who are not active, they should start taking small steps. They can start with a 20-minute workout regime. They can do a bit of warm-up and they can start with 10 reps (repetitions) and then keep increasing their stamina. I would suggest a very basic workout regime as nowadays, all the movements have been restricted and the body is going into a lethargic mode. As people are working from home, they are sitting in one place and no one knew that they would be restricted for this long. It's better to start moving a bit as this can only help in keeping your body active.â View this post on InstagramFollow the circuit at home.. Perform each exercise for 30 Sec and you can go up to 45 sec Also.. start 10 min warm up jog in place or skipping or you can do burppies , after workout 10 to 20 mins cardio you can even dance , stairs, walk, run, burn 200 cal in 20 min Step up Squats Star jump Squats with tricep extension Windshield wiper Good morning to dB press Crunches Round kicks right side Round kicks left side Ball rollout push up Standing mountain climber Squats jack Chest press Scorpion push ups Jog in place Knee tuck up Jumping jack Swiss ball abs crunch Ball hamstring curl #Committedtofitness #workoutfromhome @reebokindia @bodysculptorofficial @leankitchenbymaya @rohanbodysculptor @maya_pereiraA post shared by (@prashantsixpack) I also wanted to understand why are people getting demotivated and are not willing to continue with their workout regime at home. Explaining his stance on the same, he told me, âPeople, maybe, are getting demotivated by seeing workout videos on Instagram. One reason could be that they are not able to cope with what other people are doing and the kind of exercises they are doing. I would suggest following a tutorial that has stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3.â He also went on to add, âDo not lose hope and be consistent with working out, you will eventually see the impact. Build on your stamina step by step. I wouldn't suggest sweating out hard in the first three days and then, you lose the grip so keep it slow and gradual progress will help you attain your goals.â Prashant is not only just a trainer but he also owns a chain of gyms which are shut due to the outbreak. I asked him how is he taking of all as the business is surely getting impacted. On this, he said, âI am taking it positively and for the gym owners, they will have to be patient and stay calm because of this outbreak. Well, it's time to be with your family. I would advise keeping yourself busy with whatever you like, be it reading, cooking or playing with your kids. This will help in keeping your mind healthy.â As we are about to end the conversation, I take up the chance to ask him the golden question about how is SRK working out at home. View this post on InstagramA post shared by (@prashantsixpack) , âI have been training Shah Rukh sir for good 22 years and the rapport we share now is quite strong. I have already given him the workout and he is doing it twice a day at his home. Right now, he is focusing more on strengthening his legs.â He explained. âI would suggest keeping working out at home as it will keep your mind sane,â he said and signed off. Well, MensXP hopes that you will take Prashantâs suggestions seriously and incorporate them into your lives. View the full article
  14. With all the free time the COVID-19 quarantine has forced upon us, thereâs a tendency to spend a lot of it daydreaming (especially if you live alone) about the day it all finally ends - seeing friends and family after perhaps the longest gap many of us have ever experienced, and hopefully planning the recovery party to end all recovery parties. Right now though, weâre all on hold. Some of us have dealt with things by avoiding depressing news statistics, some of us have thrown ourselves into work-from-home cycles fearing the inevitable tide of layoffs and some of us are simply stuck in confusion. As part of the latter, itâs not uncommon to find myself bringing up memories of life before quarantine, and how we took everything from football matches to family outings and even professional handshakes for granted. Hereâs a list of some of the things Iâve gone back to while stuck in lockdown - letâs see what you can relate to as well. 1. Crowds © Reuters With everyone cooped up at home, our cities have turned into eerie, empty shells of what they once were. 2. Hugs © Reuters A little physical appreciation goes a long way, especially in rough times. Itâs truly a shame that many of us will probably think twice even after all of this is over. 3. Dating © Reuters I donât know about you guys, but love in the time of Corona has been pretty much nonexistent. 4. Personal Space © Unsplash Conversely, many of us at home with partners and family have suddenly been deprived of our me-time. Being stuck at home during a crisis undoubtedly leads to disagreements and arguments - without the space needed to maintain a healthy relationship, even the company we have can gradually become suffocating. 5. Travel © Reuters Whether for work or for leisure, getting out and about - seeing the world is an absolute joy and necessity for many of us who love to travel. Right now, weâre unlikely to explore anywhere further than our apartmentâs gates. 6. Shopping © Reuters Many of us enjoy a bit of retail therapy when we can afford it. Unfortunately, malls and shopping centres have turned into ghost towns all over the world across the last few weeks 7. Prayer and Worship © Reuters While many of us couldnât care less, several others found comfort and peace in visiting temples, churches, mosques, gurudwaras and monasteries during tough times. Iâm sure weâre all praying for the virus to leave humanity alone, but for those with a religious bent, it isnât quite the same anymore. 8. Sports Events © Reuters For many sports fans, their true religions - from football leagues to cricket tournaments - have vanished overnight with no clear replacement. 9. Healthcare © Reuters While falling sick is never fun, catching a minor bug can lead to massive anxiety and frustration, given how terrified we all are of catching COVID-19 symptoms. While weâve previously had few qualms when it comes to visiting a doctor, getting near a clinic or hospital these days can be downright scary. 10. Fitness © Reuters Hitting the gym used to be a massive source of both mental and physical fortitude for us - one that weâve had to substitute with home workouts and other solutions that just arenât the same as busting out a weightlifting routine or working on your form with trainers and fellow gym-mates. 11. Movie Theatres © Reuters How long do we have before the TV series binges get old? Not much Iâd expect - and for film buffs around the world, not having access to escape into the world of cinema at your favourite theatre can be downright heartbreaking. 12. Predictability In Everyday Life © Reuters This one is perhaps a bit abstract, but several of us found comfort and confidence in maintaining a daily schedule of sorts - managing our lives around work, family and our own personal interests. With the pandemic surging on, many of these routines have shattered, leaving us to pick up the pieces and move on in a world where tomorrow seems quite uncertain. 13. Education © Reuters While those of us with jobs have our own concerns to worry about, students donât have it much better either. Several examinations such as the 10th and 12th boards, key entrance exams and the day-to-day functioning of both minor and major universities have been hamstrung by the COVID-19 outbreak. Imagine taking out a student loan, and discovering that your first semester was spent relying on correspondence courses through the internet, rather than the education youâve actually paid for. 14. Dressing Up © Reuters Sure you can try and pull off a good look while at home, but whatâs a nice outfit without a compliment or two from your friends, and the right place to pull it off? 15. Driving © Reuters Perhaps Iâm speaking for myself (and a whole lot of motorheads) here, but putting my hands behind a steering wheel or a bikeâs handlebars was great fun and a spectacular way to unwind. Itâs even worse considering how traffic-free the roads and highways around us are today. Weâre sure thereâs much more to feel nostalgic for. But, as the situation develops, weâll hopefully be back to enjoying these things again. Share some of the pre-quarantine things you miss in the comments! View the full article

Even though in the modern era, players from both teams have downplayed the feeling of playing against each other, these five incidents from the past will surely make you feel differently. Here are the five biggest fights from the epic rivalry between the cricket teams of India and Pakistan that were captured on camera: 1. Ishant Sharma Vs Kamran Akmal, 2012: Probably the mildest altercation to make the cut, the battle of words between Indian pacer Ishant Sharma and Pakistan wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal started a delivery after the former survived getting dismissed on a no-ball. A 5â6ââ tall Akmal held his ground when a 6â4ââ giant Sharma walked right to his face and started a war of words. Suresh Raina tried to get the two athletes away from each other but Ishant went right back at it after taking a few steps back. The situation got so out of hand that the umpire had to step in and Yuvraj Singh, out of all others, had to push Ishant away in a playful manner. While Akmal was fined 5% of his match fee, Sharma was found guilty of initiating the spat and was therefore charged 15%. 2. Harbhajan Singh Vs Shoaib Akhtar, 2010: The Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan turned out to be the source of two eyebrow-raising moments. First was between Gautam Gambhir and Kamran Akmal which led to the Indian batsman hitting an angry 83 off 97 deliveries to give his side a good start to the chase. But the moment that stood out even more, was when Harbhajan Singh took over after Suresh Rainaâs dismissal and played a brilliant innings to lead India to victory with a six in the final over. The reason which led to Bhajji playing with a spark was Pakistani pacer Shoaib Akhtarâs attempt at sledging him in the second last over. After Raina was gone and Parveen Kumar, a tailender, was Singhâs partner, Akhtar once again tried to irk him with a few taunts and ânot so pleasantâ words. Harbhajan set the record straight with a powerful maximum on the second last ball of the match. 3. Gautam Gambhir Vs Shahid Afridi, 2007: Gautam Gambhir was one feisty cricketer, wasnât he? Even before his altercation with Akmal, Gambhir found himself a suited feud partner in Pakistani all-rounder, Shahid Afridi during an ODI match in Kanpur. This is how the fight unfolded: Gambhir hit Afridi for a four, after which the latter started running his mouth and the former retaliated with equal friendliness. On the next ball, Gambhir ran for a single and collided with Afridi who was standing in his way. This led to a second more serious argument, which disrupted the flow of the game and on-field umpire Ian Gould had to step in. Upon further inspection after the match, both Gambhir and Afridi were fined 65% and 95% of their respective match fees on the accounts of "conduct unbecoming to their status which could bring them or the game of cricket into disrepute" and "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play." 4. Kiran More vs Javed Miandad, 1992 This incident was more of a Grade-A trash-talking and sledging which took place way back in 1992 when India and Pakistan were playing each other in the World Cup match. By Moreâs own admission, he hid his face with his wicket-keeping gloves and kept talking to Javed Miandad from behind the stumps. An irritated Miandad first complained to the on-field umpire about the same but More simply shot down the allegations. Soon after, Miandad wanted to take a single but was stopped by his partner in his way and had to get back to his crease. By the time, More received the ball and tried to run him out while jumping in the air. Miandad instantly started jumping in the air to mimic him. The two became really good friends after this incident. The image of the Pakistani batsman jumping animatedly while More just stood there not knowing how to react will continue to be one of the fondest memories of the India-Pakistan rivalry. 5. Venkatesh Prasad vs Aamir Sohail, 1996 And finally, the big one. The World Cup 1996 knockout match between India and Pakistan which had all the ingredients for cooking up an instant classic. There was controversy, excellent batting by both sides, and even a riot taking place not two steps away from the venue, Bangaloreâs M Chinnaswamy Stadium. After Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar lost his wicket with Pakistanâs score at 84, Aamir Sohail held the fort and how. With 9 fours and 1 six, he reached the half-century mark in less than 50 balls and felt like spicing things up a bit. After smashing his 9th four off a Venkatesh Prasad delivery, he signalled towards the bowler and asked him to go get it from the line. The delivery that followed, completely stunned the batter who got clean bowled with the stump completely ripping off the ground and laying flat on the surface. Even then, Sohail didnât give up his arrogance. With zero emotions on his face, he walked straight to the pavilion while gesturing his half-century towards the crowd. View the full article
  17. The Internet is an absolutely crazy place. It will make you see stuff and believe things you shouldnât. But with its superpower of virality, topped with the invention of great photo editing tools, we often find ourselves looking at viral photos which seem too real. Alas, thatâs the honey trap we tend to fall for every other day. Just like these 5 photos that went viral online because people believed them to be true but actually turned out to be fake. These photos created a lot of buzz around themselves because they were posted on the internet at an opportune moment and exploited an already roaring online trend. From changing the original context to photoshopping images, these have them all. 1. Prince Charles & Kanika KapoorNo wonder Prince Charles....#Corona #KanikaKapoor â Rajan ð®ð³ (@MissdOportunity) March 25, 2020Soon after it was announced that Prince Charles had tested positive for coronavirus, pictures of Prince Charles and Kanika Kapoor, who also tested positive for COVID-19 last week, happily chatting together began doing the rounds online. People on Twitter even began suggesting that this was probably how the Prince of Wales contracted the infection. However, in reality the pictures are from an old event and not recent. 2. âLast Momentâ Picture Of APJ Abdul Kalam © Twitter Soon after former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalamâs sudden demise due to a cardiac arrest in 2015, this image started doing the rounds on multiple online platforms claiming this was the âlast momentâ right before he passed away. However, thatâs false because this picture originally dates back to 2007 when APJ Abdul Kalam accidently slipped on a dais during an award function at the Sangeet Natak Akademi. 3. PM Modi Touching Sonia Gandhiâs Feet © BCCL In April last year, a photo showing PM Modi touching Sonia Gandhiâs feet went viral on social media. The context of the picture claimed that PM Modi was begging Sonia Gandhi to go easy on him following Rahul Gandhiâs attempts to uncover the PMâs âjumlasâ. However, it later turned out that the image was photoshopped from a 2013 picture of PM Modi touching LK Advaniâs feet during a public event. 4. Ranu Mondalâs Scary Makeover Photo © Instagram Ranu Mondal was one of the biggest online sensations of last year, and became an overnight social media celebrity after her melodious rendition of Ek Pyaar Ka Nagma Hai broke the internet. However, following the news of her âmakeoverâ, pictures of Ranu in gaudy makeup began surfacing online. People began spewing hate on the makeup artist for the terrible makeup, but it later turned out that the picture had been edited which made Ranu look as weird as she did. The makeup artist took to her Instagram account to make things clear. 5. Ranbir-Aliaâs Wedding Invite © BCCL In October last year, an invitation card went viral online claiming that it was Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhattâs official wedding invitation for the coupleâs âJanuary 2020â wedding. The invitation details bore the names of Ranbir and Aliaâs parents and claimed that the couple is set to tie the knot on January 22, 2020 at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. However, on closer inspection many discrepancies were noticed and the card was confirmed to be fake. View the full article
  18. This topic is of significant interest for bros at the gym as there are many myths surrounding it. The claims made on this topic: 1. Masturbation is bad for your gains. 2. Masturbation reduces your testosterone and you cannot build muscle. 3. You will lose muscle if you masturbate. Nearest To The Truth The truth is, masturbation, has little to no effect on your testosterone directly. As it does not affect your testosterone, there is no significant effect of jerking off on your gains. Now, if it does not really affect your muscle gains, when should you masturbate? © Thinkstock Before Your Workout Or After Your Workout? What happens when you masturbate? A couple of hormonal changes happen in your body. The hormones at play here are prolactin and dopamine. When you masturbate, your prolactin levels shoot up and your dopamine levels take a dip. When these two happen together, which they do when you masturbate, your sexual drive suppresses for a few hours and your heart rate goes up. You feel physically exhausted and tired. You desire a couple of hours of good sleep as well. If you happen to plan a workout after masturbating, this can impact the intensity of your workout in a couple of ways. © Thinkstock 1. You may either feel like missing the session altogether as you are tired and in a mood to sleep. It is not really motivating for you to hit the weights in such a state. You would rather hit the bed and doze off for a couple of hours than going to the gym. 2. If you do end up going to the gym, your workouts might not be that intense as you are feeling tired and have an already elevated heart rate. You may not be able to lift as heavy as you normally would. This would lead to a lower workout volume and might add up in the long term affecting your muscle gains. If you happen to masturbate after a workout, you will have the same effects as above. But, the good part would be that you have already completed your intense training session and your workout was not affected in any significant way as well. So, if you compare the two, masturbation post-exercise seems a better option in the given scenario. Again, at the end of the day, it is your call and your personal choice of what you would like to do and what suits you better. 21. This is a 27-year-old story where two titans of the technology world were competing with each other for the dominant personal computer spot. In August of 1997, Bill Gates saved Apple, which at the time was on the brink of bankruptcy. While most companies would let their rivals die out, this is the story of when two companies decided to help each other out instead of letting one fold. © Pinterest âBill, thank you. The worldâs a better place,â Jobs told Gates when Microsoft invested $150 million in Apple and offered free access to use Microsoft Office on Mac personal computers. This historic move saved Apple from going down under and in exchange, Apple dropped their lawsuit against Microsoft, claiming the company copied their operating system. 20 years ago this week, Steve Jobs was on the cover of @TIME, thanking @BillGates for "saving Apple." â Codecademy (@Codecademy) August 24, 2017However, 10 years later, the two CEOs met on-stage at the D5 tech conference and relived the memory of coming together. In the interview, Jobs said "Apple was in very serious trouble,â and what was really clear was that "if the game was a zero-sum game where for Apple to win, Microsoft had to lose, then Apple was going to lose.â âThere were too many people at Apple and in the Apple ecosystem playing [that] game,â he explained. âAnd it was clear that you didnât have to play that game because Apple wasnât going to beat Microsoft.â © Pinterest âTo me, it was pretty essential to break that paradigm,â Jobs said. âAnd it was also important that you know, Microsoft was the biggest software developer outside of Apple, developing for the Mac. So it was just crazy what was happening at that time. And Apple was very weak and so I called Bill up and we tried to patch things up.â For Microsoft, it was a new business opportunity as well as a way to get Apple back on its feet. While Gates did end up with 18.2 million Apple shares, but these were non-voting shares as Microsoft was their fiercest rival. Eventually, Gates sold all of Apple shares in 2003, however as of 2019, those shares would have been worth $40-50 billion. âThatâs worked out very well,â said Gates at the D5 tech conference. âIn fact, every couple years or so, thereâs been something new that weâve been able to do on the Mac and itâs been a great business for us.â Well, many thought that this tech mythic story wasnât true until the two CEOs met for an interview together. Thereâs no doubt it is a great story about the two rivals. It proves eliminating competition isnât the only way to win and in turn, working together helped both companies to become the richest organisations in the world. What makes this story extraordinary is the fact that Bill Gates at the time was a cut-throat businessman and had a reputation for not being apologetic. Today, Bill Gates is known for his generosity and philanthropy, but he was a very different person in 1997 who chose to save his rival rather than see it sink. View the full article
  22. While for most people, dandruff may be somewhat seasonal, there are a few who shed a lot throughout the year. Dandruff basically is the flaked skin of the scalp. So any minor skin condition around the scalp, or a dry or oily scalp, and youâll have constant dandruff, no matter what the season. © iStock Trust us when we say this, it can get pretty embarrassing at times, as people assume that you are just dirty and do not shampoo your hair. Now, when youâre under quarantine, it may not seem to be a problem if you have âdirty hair.â However, leaving it untreated during this whole time will only aggravate the situation. © iStock As wonderful as they seem to be, shampoos donât always work. Yes, they may get you a clean mane for some time, probably a day or two. You need proper, medicated shampoos, and that for a prolonged time if you really want to see the results. However, god luck on getting your hands on them, given the current lockdown. Furthermore, if you were getting your hair treated at salons for dandruff, even that is out of the window for now. © iStock Well, fret not. Here are some quick home remedies that you can try out during the length of the quarantine that should significantly reduce your dandruff shedding problem and help you get that awesome mane that you have been looking for. Lemon Segments Massages © iStock You donât even need fresh lemons actually, for this. Just massage some partially squeezed, but clean lemon segments on your scalp for a couple of mins every day and wash it off with normal water. The lemon helps in neutralising the pH imbalance which is often the cause of dandruff and a lot of skin conditions. Garlic & Honey Hair Pre-Conditioner © iStock Slightly crush a few cloves of garlic and let it be for a few minutes, as it oxidises. Add a few teaspoons of honey, and mix it will. Using one of the cloves from the resulting mixture, rub the honey on your scalp, really well. Garlic is particularly useful when it comes to treating dandruff. A lot of the organic anti-dandruff products that you see on the market, uses garlic as one of their ingredients, A Tea Tree Oil Massage © iStock As much as we love a good coconut oil champi, tea tree oils work far better on dandruff ridden scalps. A good and thorough massage with some tea tree oil works wonders on your scalp and keeps dandruff at bay for a considerable time. Plus, the other nutrients in the oil is really great for the hair follicles and the general health of your scalp. Baking Soda, Curd, and Mint Mask © iStock This oneâs a little tricky to get done. With that being said, it is also the one that has the maximum payouts. In a small bowl full of curd, mix some baking soda, and some crushed mint leaves. Ensure that the curd hasnât soured, when you pick the curd. Mix all of them well, and apply the paste as a mask on your hair and scalp. Wash it off using lukewarm water and a mild shampoo if it is needed. Repeat this twice a week for 3 weeks, and you should see visibly reduced dandruff. Onions © iStock Onions have many nutrients that have great antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, it helps with blood flow and blood circulation in your scalp. Simply blend an onion in a food blender and apply the resulting paste on your scalps and wash off. Alternatively, you can also thinly slice the onion and rub the slices on your scalp. Aloe Vera © iStock Actually, all you need is the aloe vera sap for your scalp. Just massage the sap properly onto your scalp and let it rest thoroughly for about 20 mins, before washing it off with lukewarm water. Aloe Vera not only helps in cleaning up your scalp, it also works really well in regulating your scalpâs hydration. View the full article
  23. Every year, a ton of new games make it to the market and though not all of them are worth your time and money, it becomes very difficult to find out the ones that are worth picking up. Of course, we review a lot of them to tell you whether or not it's worth buying but we also come across a lot of disappointing titles almost every now and then. Well, I decided to list these games out because I seem to have too much time to think about these games during the lockdown. Before I begin, I'd like to point out that none of these games are bad by any means. I mean, it's a huge task to make a game and release it to the public, so if anything, we should appreciate their efforts. So I am simply pointing out the ones which I found to be very disappointing. Essentially, we're looking at an "overhyped and underdeliver" kind of situation here with these games. Let's check it out - Watch Dogs Watch Dogs is one of those games that literally made me go "Wowza" when I first saw it at an E3 keynote 6 years ago. Seriously, it was one of the best looking video game demos that I had ever seen. But the final retail version that shipped to the players? Well, it was nothing like what we were promised. Anyway, it's currently available for free from the Epic Games Store, so you can check it out if you want to. Fable 3 If you've played Fable 3, then you're probably wondering why is this game in the list of most disappointing games? Well, as I mentioned earlier, we're talking about the games that couldn't really deliver on the promises made before their release. Fable 3's designer Peter Molyneux is the one considered to be guilty of this. Game Of Thrones RPG The only good thing about the Game Of Thrones RPG was the story. I mean, you just can't go wrong with a GoT plot, right? Oh wait, I forgot about season 8. Anyway. The GoT RPG game was disappointing in almost every way. The game mechanics were bad and even the graphics were simply not that great. Simply put, it wasn't on par with the RPGs that were ruling at that time. Duke Nukem Forever This is a game that was sitting in development for 15 years. The devs started working on it back in 1997 and it came out 2011. The game legit feels veery old due to that. Everything from dialogue, gameplay mechanics and even graphics, feels like it was made for a 90s game. However, there was way too much hype surrounding this game, and it simply couldn't deliver it. 25. Prince Ali Raza, who had claimed to be the last surviving Oudh prince, recently passed away. Living alone in the ruins of a 14-century Tughlaq era hunting lodge in the heart of Delhi, he led a reclusive life and died a lonely death. When his body was found in the now-worn-down ruin that came to be called as Malcha Mahal, a table had been set for his mother, Princess Wilayat Mahal, who had committed suicide by swallowing her diamonds in 1993. Prince Ali Raza told BBC journalist Justin Rowlatt how he always set the table for his mother and filled a glass with fresh water every day, long after her death. Prince Ali Raza photographed at Malcha Mahal, where he lived for over 30 years. © BBC The dining table at Malcha Mahal © BCCL The days of the nawabs had long been over, but the pride and sentiment takes a lot longer to fade away. When an older order crumbles, it's more than just power and wealth that go down. The British occupation of India saw empires turn to dust, old systems challenged, ancestral wealth drained and older hierarchies replaced with new ones. In post-Independence India, aristocracy found itself struggling to adjust to the new order. A person's worth in the social order was more important than his birth and lineage was not the only way to climb the social ladder. Aristocracy was dying and, for royals, it was more tumultuous than Independence itself. There were some who were able to adjust and build a new life for themselves in the new world. The Rajputs displayed their impressive vintage car collections, put family heirlooms in museums, turned their massive palaces into hotels and invited the world to live the royal life by proxy for a while. Image for representational purpose only © Thinkstock Photos But some were not so lucky. Ali Raza's mother Wilayat Mahal had arrived in Delhi in the 1970s along with him and his sister Princess Sakina. She had claimed to be a direct descendant of the famous Awadh king, Wajid Ali Shah, and asked for a compensation from the then-government for the lost wealth and property confiscated by the British power. The veracity of the claim was challenged by the descendants of Wajid Ali Shah and Wilayat Mahal was branded an impersonator. Wajid Ali Shah was the last ruler of Awadh, and a famous patron of the arts. Poet, playwright and dancer himself, he was an artist more than a ruler. Awadh resounded with the sound of music and ghazals in his reign, but the same merriment in the pleasures of art led to his downfall. He was exiled by the British in 1854 over accusations of a 'debauched' and 'lawless' lifestyle and regime. Prince Ali Raza and his sister Princess Sakina © BCCL The weight of dying aristocracy is often too heavy to bear. With an ancestral pride and a distrust of a world in which hierarchies are blurred, the reality of the aristocrat becomes more and more befuddled. Princess Mahal's insistence on being awarded a palatial house was part of this befuddled identity. It was an attempt to preserve the leftover pride of an aristocracy that had long withered. It was this pride, mixed with a sense of entitlement, that she was to pass on to her children, particularly Prince Ali Raza, who preferred to spend his days alone within the dark walls of a crumbling monument that he called home, rather than let the world in. Mixing with commoners was not an option. The Indira Gandhi government had offered them a house in Lucknow, which Princess Mahal had refused—Delhi was the city she wanted to live in. The offer of a DDA flat was also turned down. The last descendants of the Awadh lineage would not stay in a house meant for commoners. After a 9-year protest by the Begum, the government relented and offered them Malcha Mahal, the 600-year-old hunting lodge from the Tughlaq era. Malcha Mahal as seen from outside © BCCL Hidden amidst a dense forest in Lutyens' Delhi, Malcha Mahal was in ruins, inhabited by animals of the wild kind and without any doors or windows. Wilayat Mahal accepted it and the place came to be called 'Wilayat Mahal'. A board was hung outside that said “Ruler of Oudh” and also warned people of terrible consequences if they trespassed the property. It is believed that the family had come with 15 ferocious bloodhounds who guarded them against the prying eyes of the world. One of the rooms at Malcha Mahal © BCCL Life in the dilapidated remains they called Mahal was not easy. There were no electricity and water connections. The ISRO space station provided them with a water connection later, just about enough for survival. A royal family living in the ruins of a monument, fiercely guarded by their canines, is one of the most intriguing yet well-kept secrets of Delhi. After his mother committed suicide by swallowing the dust of her crushed diamonds, Ali Raza and his sister Sakina were left to fend for themselves, armed only with an inherited pride and an incapability of dealing with the new world. © BCCL Ali Raza was sometimes seen cycling to the market to buy groceries and meat for his dogs. He had to sell his family jewels to keep food on the table. In a house with no doors, bare minimum furniture and no electricity, the dining table, with old cutlery elaborately laid out at meal times, was the last attempt to relive the splendor of a life that was no longer there. When he died, all that was found were letters from journalists who had written to him for interviews, most of which were ignored. Image for representational purpose only © Flickr_lensnmatter Prince Ali Raza was not alone in his misery. The loneliness of living as fading royalty in a modern world can get unbearable. Wealth and property are easy to take away, not pride and habit. Raja Briraj Kshatriya Birbar Chamupati Singh Mahapatra, known as the playboy king of India, was the proud owner of an impressive collection of vintage cars, bikes and horses, and lived in a place with 30 servants in his heyday. In his last days, he lived in a mud hut and was dependent on villagers, who were once his subjects, for food. He died penniless and alone. Call it the curse of royalty, but being born a king at the wrong time was worse than being a king at the right time. Image for representational purpose only © Flickr_lensnmatter Ms Singh Baghel, who hails from a royal family, says: “With the new government we were also made irrelevant, and the old Thakur pride had so many notions. Of not working for personal gain; of not being able to discuss money; and so first went the chandeliers, then the silverware, jewels, fine clothes till eventually we sold even our heritage and surname to interviewers and journalists.” The royal world, as we know it, has its charms and intrigues working for it. The common outsider is fascinated by the tales of valour, pride, luxury and integrity – most of which is true. What the world fails to see is the immense pain this burden of carrying a fading legacy brings with it. Being a royal today comes with the moral obligation towards your past but often without the financial benediction and social acknowledgement. India lost most of its wealth to colonialism and it's still struggling to be the golden bird it was once known as. When your family history boasts of a similar fate, how do you get past it?
