The Browns may like McDaniels and the feeling might be mutual:If the Browns are interested in McDaniels, then Dorsey may have to start acting in earnest:McDaniels has been continually linked as a possible Browns target over the years, in part because of having grown up in the area and because he is part of the Bill Belichick coaching tree. Of course Myles Garrett Color Rush Jersey , that tree includes former Browns coaches Romeo Crennel, who went 28-55 in six years as a head coach, including a 24-40 mark in four years with the Browns; and Eric Mangini, who was 33-47 in five years as a head coach, including a 10-22 record in two years with the Browns.Overall, it would be hard to say that the Belichick coaching tree is one that should be of interest to Dorsey:That Tweet did come at the start of the 2018 season, so since then O’Brien has clawed his way above .500, but Patricia did not exactly cover himself in glory by going 6-10 in his first season with the Detroit Lions. It is also interesting to note that Dorsey’s agent (yes , even general managers have agents) is Bob LaMonte, who was McDaniels’ agent right up until McDaniels walked out of an agreement last year to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Dorsey has certainly spent time talking to LaMonte about the situation and you have to wonder if Dorsey would be willing to down that road with McDaniels. As of now, the Browns and McDaniels have not set up an interview, so time will tell if there is any actual interest from the Browns in taking another shot at a Belichick assistant coach.

Hockenson Aaron Rodgers Jersey , Chris LindstromPhoto by Michael Hickey/Getty ImagesSB Nation’s penultimate draft of 2019 has arrived. In just a few days, the Green Bay Packers and other teams will make their choices official and end the months-long speculation about prospects. Draft guru Dan Kadar can also go on his long-awaited vacation to Tahiti, a deserved break from the grind of college tape and player evaluation. In Kadar’s second-to-last 2019 mock draft, he sees the Packers going in familiar and understandable directions with their first-round picks. While tight ends rarely justify such an early selection, Iowa’s T.J. Hockenson possess rare two-way ability for a prospect at the position and the high-end athletic profile to justify consideration. Furthermore, the value of a “Y” tight end in Matt LaFleur’s offense will make Hockenson a difficult option to refuse should he remain on the board for the Packers.Several offensive-line prospects fit the Packers, but none more so than Boston College’s Chris Lindstrom. Acme Packing Company also selected Lindstrom here in the SB Nation NFL writer mock draft, arguing Lindstrom’s athletic profile, impressive college track record Randall Cobb Color Rush Jersey , and schematic fit made him a strong choice for Green Bay: A loss in the high-scoring affair would have given Green Bay a higher draft selection, but would the team have picked any differently?" />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesHorizontal - WhiteAcme Packing Companya Green Bay Packers communityLog In or Sign UpLog InSign UpFanpostsFanshotsSectionsPackersOddsAboutMastheadCommunity GuidelinesStubHubMoreAll 322 blogs on Horizontal - WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections The APC PodcastPackers Film RoomFantasy Football Advicehave picked any differently?CDTShareTweetShareShareWhat impact would losing in Week 16 have had on the Packers’ 2019 draft?Photo by Steven Ryan/Getty ImagesThe conclusion of the 2018 season was far from what anyone expected for the Green Bay Packers prior to the beginning of the season. With just three wins in the final 10 games, the Packers’ postseason hopes were dashed well before the final few weeks of the season. As a result, Green Bay found itself in one of its highest spots in the draft pecking order of the past decade.Almost unfortunately, the Packers rather improbably won an additional game in the final stretch of the season that dropped them several slots down in the first round. Green Bay still landed a legitimate prospect with a high ceiling at pick 12 with the choice of Michigan’s Rashan Gary. But would things have played out differently with a top-10 pick? Some alternative draft options, as well as how the Packers’ draft haul stacked up against that of another divisional rival, are analyzed in today’s musings. Is Montravius Adams’ roster spot in peril? It was one thing for Green Bay to bring defensive lineman Fadol Brown back for the 2019 training camp, but it was another for the Packers to draft Kingsley Keke. Although he was a fifth-round selection, Keke will be a versatile player along the Packers’ defensive line next season and is already someone team personnel is drooling over. While many talked about Keke , who will wear a number 96 jersey to theoretically put an end to Muhammad Wilkerson’s short-lived stay in Green Bay, it could also put pressure on Montravius Adams.A 2017 third-rounder, Adams spent his rookie season on injured reserve before making minimal contributions in his second season. There was some boom-or-bust potential when the Packers initially drafted Adams and the addition of Keke could put him on the bubble. Last year, the Packers kept five defensive linemen at the final cutdown. Mike Daniels, Kenny Clark, and Dean Lowry figure to be locks to make the roster unless something unforeseen happens. Tyler Lancaster found a niche on the roster in 2018 as an undrafted free agent. The addition of Keke would give the Packers five solid rotational players for 2019 even before Adams and Brown. The Packers cut ties in the past with former third-round pick Khyri Thornton in short order when it became apparent he would not be a strong rotational piece for the team. Adams has work to do to make sure he does not become the next far-too-early casualty.Would a loss to the New York Jets in Week 16 have changed the Packers’ draft plans?Green Bay came out on the winning end of a back-and-forth, 44-38 overtime duel with the Jets in Week 16. But had they not left MetLife Stadium with a win, the Packers would have owned the eighth overall pick with a 5-10-1 record, one pick ahead of the Detroit Lions. At that spot Jaire Alexander Jersey , Green Bay would have had the opportunity to pounce on a defensive player such as Ed Oliver or Devin Bush. With a higher pick in the second round as well, the Packers could have been afforded the opportunity to take a tackle like Dalton Risner or quarterback Drew Lock, whom the organization was rumored to be keenly interested in. General Manager Brian Gutekunst said the Packers were “locked in” on Rashan Gary since February, but it would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall in the Packers’ war room had Ed Oliver been available. While everyone in Titletown is certainly hoping for Gary to become the next great edge rusher to wear number 52, it will be fascinating to watch the career trajectories of both Gary and Oliver for years to come. The Packers’ draft is one that Detroit Lions fans might wish they had Looking back at the early draft results, the Packers look to have had perhaps the strongest draft from top to bottom in the NFC North. While time will tell about the success of Green Bay’s eight selections, especially on the first day of the draft, I personally would be jealous as a fan of another divisional squad. One could argue the Lions’ best two value picks were their first two picks of the third day in Austin Bryant and Amani Oruwariye. Detroit passed on an opportunity to take one of the top defensive players on the board in round one to grab T.J. Hockenson, which is not a bad pick in itself. However Lane Taylor Color Rush Jersey , the Lions could have easily swiped another quick-fix, high-potential tight end like Irv Smith with their early second-round pick and still addressed the position without a premium choice. Instead, they reached mightily in the second and third rounds with Jahlani Tavai and Will Harris to fill defensive holes.Watching the NFL Draft with a Lions fan, it was hard to ignore his agony over the team’s first three selections. After all, the team’s rocky experience with another top-ten tight end, Eric Ebron, still looms in the rear-view mirror despite the differences between him and Hockenson. But with the draft as top-heavy in defensive talent and loaded with tight end depth as it was, Green Bay did better to take Gary early and add Jace Sternberger later in the third round.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was the first to report: The one-year deal, reportedly maxing out at $13 million, addresses arguably the biggest position of need for Indianapolis heading into the offseason. Last season, Funchess caught 44 balls for an average of 12.5 yards per reception, amassing 549 yards and four touchdowns. His best season came in 2017, where he caught 63 passes for 840 yards and eight touchdowns in 16 starts. He’s averaged 13.9 yards per reception over his career, with 21 total touchdowns. The Michigan product was a second-round pick for the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFL Draft, and finished out his rookie contract there. With the Colts, Funchess will presumably slide into the No. 2 receiving role behind TY Hilton and ahead of a returning Deon Cain — who missed all of his rookie season with a knee injury. Funchess will step into a Colts’ locker room as another big target for Andrew Luck as the tallest receiver on the team. He’s also the same height as tight ends Eric Ebron and Ryan Hewitt. Financially, Funchess becomes the second-highest paid receiver behind Hilton. With a one-year deal , he’ll have the chance to prove his worth for a longer extension next offseason, while the Colts avoid storing long-term money into a non home-grown talent. While there is some obvious excitement from Colts’ fans as the team holds a ton of cap space heading into the 2019 season, GM Chris Ballard has already taken care of re-signing a few important players internally in recent weeks. The Colts signed extensions with Mark Glowinski, Ross Travis, and Margus Hunt thus far and there are a few others who might still be scooped up previous to free agency officially getting underway. Glowinski went from a virtual camp body to a pivotal starter throughout the course of the season, Travis offers a very interesting skill set to the tight end room and looked extremely promising previous to a year-ending knee injury. Hunt was a part of Ballard’s initial free agency process and has grown into his own with the Colts for the first time in his career. One of those Colts who is set to become a free agent as the new league year kicks off is safety Matthias Farley. Now the Colts also have cornerback Pierre Desir and safety Clayton Geathers in the mix for possibly being re-signed. 32-year-old Mike Mitchell doesn’t seem to be quite as likely a candidate to come back, and the team has already stated that they won’t offer Corey Moore a return to Indy either.Additionally, the Colts have some interesting options around the league to bring in to plug in at safety if they aren’t to agree on extensions with their respective teams and there’s an interesting field at the position in the draft as well. Aside from Malik Hooker and George Odum — an UDFA in 2018 — there isn’t much in the cupboard under contract for 2019.Farley adds quite a bit to the safety corps for the Colts and it makes sense to bring him back via an affordable contract which Farley would likely manage regardless of whether he comes back to Indy or is allowed to test the market. Re-signing Farley certainly doesn’t hamper the Colts’ plans for the position regardless of where they would possibly look to add top-end talent to the position. We’ve seen year in, and year out that quality depth is not only good to have, but pertinent to having the ability for absorbing injuries, poor play as well as adapting to various team’s offensive systems.Farley has been good in coverage for the Colts and fits well in a Cover 2 shell moving forward under Matt Eberflus. He only played in 5 games last year for the Colts, but defended 4 passes, added an interception Denico Autry Jersey , and 19 total tackles. He continued to be a powerful hitter, and the versatility to sit atop the coverage or move down into the box under any assignment given to him.In 2017 Farley was very important to the team’s efforts finishing third on the team in total tackles (95), and was second on the team in passes defensed (7) as well as third with 2 interceptions. Farley, for my money, in this 2017 season, proved that he was not only an excellent rotational option for the Colts at safety, but also capable of being a reliable starter when called upon.Farley doesn’t bring the top-level money value to the free agency period this year, as he’s coming off of a short year due to injury. But, he’s familiar and works well within the Colts’ defensive system, they absolutely love his leadership and knowledge he brings to the back end of the Colts’ defense, he’ll only be 27 this year, and the Colts constantly talk about keeping their own in the building.I definitely believe that Farley has done enough in every aspect of what the Colts are looking to do, in order to be brought back to bolster the Colts defensive depth moving forward.
  4. at Carolina Panthers Jarran Reed Color Rush Jersey , and the most important news is the fact that Doug Baldwin isn’t inactive. He was a game-time decision due to a groin injury, but he went through walkthroughs and is good to go.Among those not playing is linebacker K.J. Wright, who was already ruled out on Friday with a knee injury. Austin Calitro will take his place. Rather surprisingly, both Joey Hunt and Jordan Simmons are inactive, so that means Ethan Pocic is surely the backup option in case something happens to either Justin Britt or DJ Fluker. On defense, Poona Ford and Branden Jackson are both scratches, as the UDFA Ford continues to find it difficult to get playing time on a weekly basis. Here are the inactives for both teams:Seattle SeahawksLB K.J. Then look at the AFC, where the top six teams in effective 2019 cap space exist per OverTheCap. Those teams, in order, are the Colts, Jets, Bills, Browns, Raiders, and Texans. Indianapolis actually has $117 million in effective space, almost $30 million more than second place New York. That’s even with $27 million going to Andrew Luck, but the Colts only have ten players set to make more than $2 million next season. Indy is in great position, coming off of a 10-6 season and having many key pieces in place at quarterback, offensive line, and on an emerging defense. They’ll have no problems retaining their own and should be able to compete for the services of any free agent. Not so much the case for many NFC teams.Teams set to have less than $20 million in cap space include the Panthers, Falcons, Saints, Bears, Bucs Nick Vannett Color Rush Jersey , Vikings, and Eagles, with Philly currently projected at $14.4 million over. Only three AFC teams are looking at less than $20 million, including the Patriots ($19 million), Dolphins, and Jaguars, the other team currently over the 2019 cap. The NFC teams in the best position for spending are the two teams now situated at the top of the 2019 NFL Draft:The 49ers have $62 million in space and are picking second, while the Cardinals have $61 million and are picking first. The Cowboys are next at $53 million, followed by the Seattle Seahawks at $52 million. How will some of these financially struggling cap situations work themselves out?The Eagles entire offseason centers around the decisions to be made at quarterback, which ideally for them likely includes an agreement with Nick Foles to keep and trade him. The team will likely exercise the $20 million option that puts them over the cap and then he can choose to pay $2 million to enter free agency, at which point the Eagles can then franchise tag him if they wanted to. Instead, the two parties could agree he doesn’t opt out and then trade him. Either way, Philly is probably closer to $4 million in cap space than negative $14 million. It’s still not enough. The Eagles could save $7 million by releasing Timmy Jernigan, who missed all but three games. They’d save $8 million by releasing 37-year-old tackle Jason Peters. They’d save $5 million by releasing safety Rodney McLeod, who also missed 13 games. They’d save all $9.3 million of wide receiver Nelson Agholor’s salary. Is he a receiver you’d expect to be on that level of pay? They’d save $5.3 million by releasing defensive end Chris Long, who didn’t have as big of an impact this season as he did in 2017. They’d save $3 million to release backup lineman Stefen Wisniewski. These moves would allow them more flexibility to re-sign defensive end Brandon Graham, who is a free agent. They might also want to retain Golden Tate, who could be a better option than Agholor. There’s also cornerback Ronald Darby, running back Jay Ajayi, and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata as unrestricted free agents. The Minnesota Vikings famously aren’t getting away from Kirk Cousins $29 million salary next season and they have just $6 million in effective cap space. Releasing safety Andrew Sendejo will save them $5.5 million, and $4.5 million if they wanted to part ways with starting right guard Mike Remmers. That may not be enough room for them to entertain re-signing Anthony Barr and Sheldon Richardson, both of whom are free agents. That’s when the decisions get tough. Trae Waynes is set to make $9 million on his fifth-year option and the Vikings could save all of that if they released the starting cornerback. I don’t know that they’d entertain releasing Xavier Rhodes, Everson Griffen, or Kyle Rudolph Justin Britt Color Rush Jersey , but as an unbiased observer, I did for a second. The Buccaneers have just $12 million in cap space but can start chipping away on the roster immediately for new head coach Bruce Arians. I assume they’ll release defensive end Vinny Curry and save all $8 million of his salary. They could save another $10 million by letting go of receiver DeSean Jackson, who turns 33 next season and who was awful when playing with Jameis Winston (33.8 passer rating on Winston-to-Jackson). They’ll save $7 million by releasing tight end Cameron Brate, if they want to. A combined $7.5 million by releasing defensive linemen William Gholston and Mitch Unrein. Just those moves get Tampa Bay to $42 million in cap space and none of those contracts leave any dead money behind. With all that, there are still rumors that the Bucs could cut defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to save $13 million and make him one of the top free agents on the market. The Chicago Bears will be a popular Super Bowl pick next season I bet, but they have just $13 million in effective cap space and a priority free agent in safety Adrian Amos. They may also want to retain starting right tackle Bobby Massie. They’ll save $6 million by releasing tight end Dion Sims (how do contracts like that even happen?) and $3 million if they want to cut backup QB Chase Daniel. The next place they could possibly go is $6.4 million in savings on linebacker Danny Trevathan. Up next are the Saints, hot off the controversy of the season and still expected contenders for the NFC next year, with $14.4 million in effective cap space. Free agents include running back Mark Ingram, tight end Ben Watson (retiring), linebacker Manti Te’o, and cornerback P.J. Williams. They’re spending the third-most money in the NFL on their offensive line (Cowboys first, Eagles second) and they’ve been grooming some potential replacements, so would New Orleans risk letting go of one of their starting linemen? Left guard Andrus Peat is on the fifth-year option ($9.6m, non-guaranteed) and the Saints would save $6.4 million if they let go of right guard Larry Warford. They’d save $7 million on center Max Unger. No expectation that they will, just a thought. They’d save $4 million on safety Kurt Coleman, $3.7 million on receiver Cameron Meredith, and $2.5 million on receiver Ted Ginn. The Saints may also try to work with Drew Brees on his $33 million cap hit given his age and I’m sure Brees’s desire to win another Super Bowl before he retires. At nearly $18 million in effective cap space, the Falcons must be looking to load up on defense, since that’s the side of the ball that Dan Quinn has done almost nothing with since taking over. They could save $12 million by releasing pass rusher Vic Beasley, who hasn’t been doing much of any pass rushing in the last two seasons. They’d save $7.9 million on cornerback Robert Alford. Another $4.5 million on defensive end Brooks Reed. And $3.2 million on guard Brandon Fusco. Their free agents include Bruce Irvin, Terrell McClain, Grady Jarrett, Tevin Coleman, Jordan Richards Nazair Jones Color Rush Jersey , Ty Sambrailo, and Andy Levitre. The last NFC team I’ll look at are the Carolina Panthers, who have $19.1 in effective cap space. The Panthers free agents include Ryan Kalil, Thomas Davis, Julius Peppers, Eric Reid, Mike Adams, Wes Horton, Devin Funchess, Daryl Williams, and Chris Clark. They could lose two starters on the offensive line (Kalil, Clark), plus a third who started at tackle in 2017 (Williams). They could lose both safeties (Reid, Adams), two on the defensive line (Horton, Peppers), a starting linebacker and a starting receiver. Now, some of these players need to be replaced anyway, but Carolina has a lot of work to do and their disappointing season was not at all surprising to me as I picked them to finish well out of the playoffs. Because the roster just does not look very good and now they have little cap space and lots to fix. They save $6 million by releasing defensive end Mario Addison, but he’s been their leading pass rusher as of late. They save $9.2 million on the fifth year option of linebacker Shaq Thompson. They save $5 million if they release wide receiver Torrey Smith, which I’m sure they will. There’s $2 million on cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and $2.8 million on fellow corner Ross Cockrell. They could chip off $2.5 million with safety Da’Norris Searcy. The Panthers could edge their way to $30 million in cap space but they’ll still have a lot of starting and reserve roles to fill.

  6. Green Bay Packers Hoodie , I casually scrolled through Twitter looking for some sort of comfort in the moments directly following another 27-24 pull-your-hair-out loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night. In the middle of tweets criticizing Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers for obvious reasons, there was another tweet that stood out.Andrew Brandt, of course, is a former Packers front office executive who remains very much in the loop when it comes to NFL circles and the Green Bay organization. And last night, Brandt’s analogy of a “pitch count” when it came to touches for the Packers’ prized up-and-coming running back Aaron Jones was right on the money. For two weeks, Jones has been the most valuable Aaron on the roster. Yet, in a critical fourth quarter, Jones’ touches were limited, much like they have been all season. After accounting for 88 total yards and two touchdowns in the first half in Seattle, Jones totaled just four rushes and two catches for a combined 15 yards in the second half. Making matters worse, with Rodgers struggling through the air as the game wore on, Green Bay abandoned the run game in the final quarter. Jones rushed just one time in the fourth quarter and twice over the Packers’ final three possessions. Even in the passing game Elgton Jenkins Jersey , the Packers could not get the ball to the man who has become their most explosive talent outside of Davante Adams. On Green Bay’s second-to-last drive, one that ended with a field goal, Rodgers was sacked on 3rd-and-5 while gazing downfield. It will eat at him in the next film session when he sees Jones open almost directly in front of him near the first down marker with at least another five yards of green space in front of him. On first down of the final drive, Rodgers again was hesitant to check down to Jones for yardage and settled for a throw-away incompletion instead. The inability for the Packers to continually get the ball in the hands of Jones and let him create hurt them against Seattle. His mere 11 carries for 40 yards, in addition to one carry for Jamaal Williams, prevented any resemblance of offensive balance.Sadly, this has been a full-season trend. It was just a week ago that Jones exploded in the first quarter against the Miami Dolphins for almost 100 yards on four carries, including a 67-yard run. However, McCarthy and the Packers immediately made an egregious mistake and gave Jones just three carries the entire second quarter. As has been the case most of the season, the Packers went into halftime in a tight game with a stalling offense.A renewed effort to get Jones involved in the second half resulted in 145 rushing yards and two scores on the day, with another 27 yards receiving. Jones’ 15 carries versus Miami remains his biggest workload of the season despite being the kind of coveted playmaker at running back that Green Bay has searched for throughout Rodgers’ career. Media and fans alike thought the coaching staff turned a corner that day with Jones’ emergence and the departure of Ty Montgomery less than two weeks before.Clearly that was not the case Thursday night. After a two-game suspension to start the season, the Packers were slow to reincorporate Jones into the offensive gameplan. That was excusable for perhaps a game or two , especially with the lingering issues Jones had in his rookie season. To be in Week 11 and keep Jones on a pitch count is another matter. He needs a minimum of 20 touches per game (6.4-yard average per carry) and could be a factor on third down screens and draws. On Thursday, Jones never saw the ball on such a critical down. Heck, after two effective drives to open the game, Jones was substituted for Williams before the first quarter ended. There is little need to save the mileage on a dynamic running back if the team’s postseason hopes are in jeopardy. Baseball fans may remember the Washington Nationals’ decision to limit the pitch count on young star Stephen Strasburg by shutting him down for the season while healthy ahead of the 2012 playoffs. Nationals fans, still without a title, wonder many what-ifs about how that postseason would have played out if their budding ace had been more involved. The lesson: be aggressive while you have the chance.McCarthy has taken heat for his under-usage of Jones all season and rightfully so. Against the Seahawks, his inability to involve Jones heavier, despite an offensive machine with a flat tire, may have been the final nail in his own coffin as well as the Packers’ 2018 season. One of the most exciting athletes in the Green Bay Packers’ 2018 draft class is finally going to get a chance to take the field on Sundays. The team promoted outside linebacker Kendall Donnerson to the active roster from the practice squad on Tuesday, and it looks likely that the rookie will be active for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. The Packers chose Donnerson in the seventh round of this year’s NFL Draft, making him the 248th overall selection. He possesses elite athletic abilities, with workout numbers such as a40-yard dash time in the mid-4.4s Rashan Gary Jersey , a 40-inch vertical, and a 3-cone time of just over seven seconds, all at 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds. Donnerson also recorded six sacks as a senior for Southeast Missouri State in 2017 and totaled 13.5 tackles for loss. The rookie will join a thin group of outside linebackers that is down to three healthy bodies. Nick Perry went on injured reserve recently, leaving the Packers with just Clay Matthews, Kyler Fackrell, and Reggie Gilbert to man the position. In order to make a roster spot for Donnerson, the Packers placed safety Ibraheim Campbell on injured reserve. He was injured on Sunday during the team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals after making eight tackles in the game. The Packers will likely try to bring him back for 2019, however, as he showed enough in a few games to warrant a shot at a roster spot next season. The Packers also made two more transactions, filling a pair of empty practice squad spots vacated by the recent promotions of Donnerson and fullback Danny Vitale. In order to give the team additional depth at safety — a position that saw both Kentrell Brice and Raven Greene sit out the last game with injuries — the Packers filled signed two players at that position: Tray Matthews and Jason Thompson. The two safeties have very different skill sets. Matthews, an undrafted rookie from Auburn, is known as a big hitter. Thompson , on the other hand, is a marvelous athlete, who had a truly impressive Pro Day workout before the 2017 NFL Draft. He had a reported 4.45-second time in the 40-yard dash, with a blistering 1.50-second split time in the first ten yards, and he added blazing times of 6.57 seconds in the 3-cone drill and 4.01 seconds in the short shuttle to go with an 11-foot-1 broad jump. Interestingly, Thompson played quarterback as a freshman at Wyoming in 2012 before transferring to Utah and moving to the secondary. His college career only consisted of 20 games played, but his athletic traits are likely what earned him a look. Matthews, on the other hand, was a multi-year starter at Auburn, who recorded five interceptions and three forced fumbles in his career.
  7. as the teams concluded practice today. It was a good final practice where a lot of players showed their best stuff on the last day. The practices are more valuable than the games because the scouts can really see how these players play in different situations so this was the real final test for these players.Today I was able to watch both the North and South practices and get my eyes on as many players as possible so here are my stock up and stock down reports on some Senior Bowl players this afternoon.Stock UpWR’s Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurinThe top two receivers of Senior Bowl week continued their dominance today. It started early with McLaurin (Ohio State) dominating the one on one reps in the morning practice and continuing his dominance of being simply uncoverable. He has truly put on a route running clinic this week and his athleticism is so impressive up close. Samuel (South Carolina) was amazing today. He put on an absolute show in the 7 on 7s and solidified himself as a top 50 player in this draft class for me. Great week for these two guys.Tight Ends Dax Raymond and Trevon WescoThe tight end group has been incredible in Mobile this year— which is quite indicative of the entire tight end class— and they showed out again today. Raymond (Utah State) is a big player who is so smooth as a mover. He is an impressive route runner too and made quite a few plays in one on ones and 7 on 7s. Wesco (WVU) has been superb all week and is a silky smooth player for his 275 pound frame. He is an excellent blocker and makes excellent cuts. Throw in that he has soft hands and Wesco will make an NFL team very happy. Both of these guys were excellent today.WR’s Penny Hart and Travis FulghamSamuel and McLaurin are both big name guys but what about the small schoolers? Hart (Georgia State) has been outstanding all week and he capped off a great week with an even better day today. He is so smooth out of his cuts and has no wasted movements in his route running. Fulgham (Old Dominion) is a bit bigger of a receiver and won with his route running and physicality today. With their small school status both of these guys have needed big weeks. I think they are risers after this week in Mobile.OT’s Chuma Edoga and Andre DillardDillard came into the week with the expectation that he would dominate. What has resulted is the best offensive tackle performance in Mobile this year. Dillard (Washington State) has dominated players all week with excellent footwork and hand usage. He really wears defenders down and is really an impressive tackle. Edoga (USC) is a bit lesser known of a player but really made a name for himself this week. He is a bit skinny and will have to add some weight but he moves really well in space and has impressive length. He shut down players all day in one on ones yet again. These two definitely improved their stock this week.DB’s Will Harris and Amani Oruwariye It wasn’t all glory for the receivers all day as two defensive backs had solid days. Safety Will Harris (Boston College) looked good in one on one’s , especially when intercepting a pass intended for Andy Isabella early in the practice. In 7 on 7s, his drops were solid and he looked comfortable in the box too. Amani Oruwariye (Penn State) was having a bit of a down week until a strong performance today. He looked good mirroring receivers off of the line of scrimmage and was competitive at the catch point. After a pretty quiet week of practice, he needed a strong day like today.RB Dexter WilliamsThe running back group has had a fairly rough week. Nobody has really stepped up and the group just hasn’t looked great. All except for Dexter Williams (Notre Dame) though. He has looked excellent in the team sections of drills and runs with a ton of power and downhill energy. His ability to plant his foot and get upfield has been really impressive all week. I’m quickly becoming a big fan of his game.Stock DownSafety Nasir AdderleyI wasn’t the biggest fan of Adderley coming into the week and I didn’t come away super impressed. He is really twitchy and a great mover from the single high safety spot. My biggest question though is if he can offer more in terms of man coverage or run defense. I honestly didn’t see positive impact in those areas this week. To add to that I think his instincts deep aren’t great and I’m not in love with him as a player. Good, rangy safety but this week pulled me away from any thoughts of first round talk.Every QB not named Drew LockOutside of Drew Lock— who was excellent in every interview and got better each day of practice— the quarterbacks really struggled all week. Trace McSorley is not an NFL player, Ryan Finley and Gardner Minshew don’t have the arms or velocity to be starters, Will Grier is really inaccurate and struggles on the move, and Tyree Jackson is a major major project. Tough week for the QBs and they struggled in every facet. DBs Kris Boyd and Juan ThornhillThis week has not been too kind to defensive backs at all. Two big name guys that I thought really struggled were cornerback Kris Boyd (Texas) and safety Juan Thornhill (Virginia). Boyd is a good athlete and a stud in the run game. He is just so bad in coverage. He struggles with instincts, anticipation, and technique and really can’t stick in coverage. Thornhill hasn’t really had a terrible week but he looks really limited as a mover and struggled in man coverage a lot. A quiet week along with showing he is only a two deep player is a tad concerning for his stock. Despite losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Indianapolis Colts’ defense put together one of their best performances of the season. They were able to hold the Jaguars to just 6 points on the afternoon and only gave up 211 total yards and 11 first downs. Players such as Kenny Moore II, Anthony Walker Peyton Manning Jersey , and Margus Hunt all had stellar games but nobody stood out quite as much as Denico Autry.Autry has been quite productive in his first season with the Colts, coming off of a solid season with the Raiders last year. Despite missing four games this year due to injury, Autry has tallied 29 tackles, 7 tackles for a loss, and 6 sacks on the season. These stats are boosted by a huge game on Sunday where he accumulated 7 tackles, 3 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles.Autry has had a few stand out games and I’ve basically been begging my Twitter followers for weeks to choose him for one of my Film Rooms. Autry broke out on Sunday and it is finally time to jump into some of his film. Let’s see just how dominant Autry really was on Sunday.Film AnalysisFor our first play, Autry does a good job of penetrating inside, forcing Carlos Hyde to bounce outside. He holds his lineman at the point of attack and linebacker Anthony Walker is able to come in for the tackle. Typically that is the end of the play but Autry does a good job of turning, locating Hyde, and knocking the ball loose for a fumble. Great hustle and a heads up play. This next clip is the first of Autry’s three sacks on the day. This is a rough rep for Jaguars guard A.J Cann— which was a common theme all day— as Autry pushes him back into Cody Kessler’s face. Autry knocks Cann off-balance early in his set Al Woods Color Rush Jersey , setting up the bull rush. He then drives Cann puts him “on skates,” driving him into the pocket. Kessler tries to bail from the pocket but runs right into Autry. This is a solid rush with a little help from Kessler. This is an outstanding rep on run defense for Autry. He starts the play with excellent quickness and is able to swim past right tackle Jermy Parnell. Autry engages both the fullback— Tommy Bohanon— and the pulling left guard—Patrick Omameh— in the hole. By taking on this double team in the hole, he frees up the linebackers to have a free shot on the runner. Great play. Our next clip is a big third-and-one early in the game, and Autry hits T.J Yeldon in the backfield. Autry is bigger, faster, and stronger than Cann. He extends his arms and drives Cann towards the center. Autry gets his head up and spots the running back, easily discards Cann and wraps up Yeldon. This likely would have been a loss on the play if Clayton Geathers continued to drive his feet through the tackle. It was still a solid play by Autry. In this clip, Autry is initially double teamed by center Tyler Shatley and left guard Omameh. Once Margus Hunt works around on the stunt, Autry is basically triple teamed. Realizing he has little chance to get through three linemen, Autry spies the QB and reacts to Kessler. Once Kessler bails from the pocket, Autry is in perfect position to pursue and make the tackle. He nearly ends up with another sack.On the very next play , Autry shows excellent hustle to track down Kessler on the sideline. Autry has a pretty nice initial rush, using a long-arm move to drive Omameh into the pocket. Once he gets penetration, Kessler bails. Autry shows great hustle in pursuit. If he doesn’t,Kessler likely cuts up field for a gain on the play. Instead, Autry forces Kessler to throw the ball away.Autry’s second sack results from another example of effort, combined with a good rush on the outside by Tyquan Lewis. At the snap, Autry finds himself triple-teamed. As the play progresses, he finds himself in a one-on-one situation with the center Shatley. Autry burst by him quickly as Kessler steps up to avoid the outside rish. Lewis deserves the assist here. The next clip is on a run in an important situation. With the Colts trailing by three late in the game, the Jaguars offense faces a huge third and one. Both Hunt and Autry step up in a huge way. Hunt bursts into the backfield and is the primary source of disruption but Autry does a great job of driving guard Chris Reed into the backfield. By driving the guard backward, Autry shuts down any cutback lane. Two gigantic bull rushes shut down this play from the snap.Autry’s most impressive play of the day is also the one he wishes he had back. He is lightning quick off of the line, firing out of his stance. Cann is immediately on his heels Malik Hooker Jersey , so Autry elects to go around him. Autry swats away Cann’s hands and blows past him for a free shot at the quarterback. Unfortunately, Autry misses and Kessler picks up a big first down and keeps the clock moving. Dishonorable mention to Geathers again as he misses a quarterback in the open field. Our last clip almost turned the tide of the game. Autry tried to swat Cann’s hands away but Cann manages to engage and stalls his initial rush. Autry counters and tosses Cann aside just as Kessler is stepping up in the pocket. Autry hits Kessler and separates him from the ball. If Autry could have held Kessler’s arm or pushed the ball away, Darius Leonard would have had an easy scoop and score. Game of inches I suppose. Regardless, it is a great play by Autry and a sweet end to a career day.AnalysisDenico Autry has been very productive in his first year with the Colts. He and Margus Hunt— when healthy— have formed a pretty passable duo inside for Matt Eberflus. Autry is a solid run defender who gets after it as a pass rusher. He is a good enough to fully take advantage of a poor offensive lineman like A.J Cann. This game was a great example of Autry’s peak on the field. He was hustling all over the place on Sunday and even flashed some really impressive rushes. In run defense, he did a great job of playing his assignment and opening up free shots for the linebackers. His big plays almost led to a victory. To this point, Autry appears to be a solid Ballard signing. While the Colts need to add talent and youth to the defensive line, Autry looks to be a key piece of the rotation going forward. With more performances like this, he could be more than just a rotational piece. Hopefully he can keep up his strong play as the red hot Texans are up next on the schedule.
  8. may even be factoids. Let us compare Russell Wilson to Dak Prescott Michael Dickson Color Rush Jersey , statistically. As Deep PassersIn any given snap in which a passing play is called, a quarterback may: throw an on-time pass, throw late, throw early, throw shallow, throw deep, throw accurately, throw inaccurately, throw into coverage, throw to an open man, and of course scramble. A good quarterback throws on time and accurately to a deep (enough) target who is more or less open. That of course is not always his choice, but it’s more or less the universal definition of a good quarterback. Short passes are not very valuable. Late passes are likely to be defended. Errant passes invite a host of bad possibilities. Scrambling can redefine what is “on time,” along with helping receivers get open, but of course it is typically harder to throw deep while on the run. Etc.My point is, if you wanted to know why the Seahawks rank sixth in passing efficiency while the Cowboys rank 26th, looking at where Prescott and Wilson target, and at what rate of completion, would be a good start. So let us:Dak Prescott SplitsPasses thrown 21-30 Yards: 7/23, 271 Yards, 1 Touchdown, 1 InterceptionIncluded in that 271 yards and accounting for that touchdown is this accurate pass to Amari Cooper who is tripled covered.Passes thrown 31-40 Yards: 5/14, 253 Yards, 4 Touchdowns, 0 InterceptionsThis is the range at which Prescott has been most dangerous this season.Passes thrown 41+ Yards: 1/4, 44 Yards, 0 Touchdowns, and 0 InterceptionsRussell Wilson SplitsPasses thrown 21-30 Yards: 20/42, 561 yards, 9 Touchdowns, 1 InterceptionRight away we see a pretty stark difference. Wilson attempts more of these middle-deep passes and completes them at a much higher rate.Passes thrown 31-40 Yards: 7/13, 297 yards, 1 Touchdown, 0 InterceptionsPasses thrown 41+ Yards: 4/7, 187 yards Alex McGough Color Rush Jersey , 4 touchdowns, 0 InterceptionsWilson completed 50% of his deep passing attempts, which is astounding. Prescott completed 31.7%.In one season Wilson completed more passes of 41+ than Prescott has over his three year career. While Prescott attempts more short passes and completes those passes at a higher rate of efficiency, short pass attempts on average actually cost an offense value. There’s a reason we have lots of vaguely emasculating ways of describing this penchant like dink-and-dunk and captain checkdown. The problem does not seem to be in Jason Garrett’s system either. Both Brian Schottenheimer and Garrett run a system which may wear the “Air” epithet, as both are indirect descendants of Don Coryell’s Air Coryell system, which greatly emphasizes downfield passing. Nor did the arrival of Amari Cooper change Prescott’s nature. Prescott just does not seem to be a very skilled or talented deep passer, and his reluctance is probably a result of that deficit. In the PocketThe NFL’s Next Gen Stats site is besieged by bugs and barely usable. Which is really too bad because some of what the site records is unique and potentially very informative. Nevertheless let us muddle through and see if we can further flesh out this statistical portrait of both passers. Both rank within the top ten in what is called “Time to throw.” Basically this means both quarterbacks take forever to pass the ball, either because of indecisiveness, an inability of their receivers to get open, an offense dominated by slow-developing routes, a tendency to only target slow developing routes, scrambling or really just a totally unintelligible mix of all of those factors. It does not necessarily tell us much about their protection, but it does seem to indicate which quarterbacks are rhythm passers and which are not.Rhythm guysDerek CarrBen RoethlisbergerDrew BreesAndy DaltonTom BradyPhilip RiversAndrew LuckMatthew StaffordHold and Hope Guys/ScramblersJosh AllenLamar JacksonRussell WilsonDeshaun WatsonAaron RodgersJared GoffSam DarnoldPatrick MahomesDak PrescottBoth Wilson and Prescott get sacked a ton. When either is sacked, it’s often going to lose big-time yardage. Wilson and Prescott both ranked bottom five for most yards lost through sacks. Both fumble very frequently. Dak is in fact last in the NFL having fumbled 12 times. Wilson has ten.A few things separate these often sacked quarterbacks. Wilson has time. Seattle ranked seventh overall in ESPN’s pass rush win rate, while Dallas didn’t finish in the top ten. And Wilson, counter-intuitively, is sacked most while his team is winning. For obvious reasons, sack percentage tends to decrease when a quarterback is winning. This season Prescott has only been sacked on 5.2% of snaps while his team was in the lead. He has been sacked on 9.6% of all pass attempts, ranking sixth from worst in the NFL. Wilson, astoundingly, has been sacked on 16.7% of all pass plays while his team is leading. His overall rate is 10.7%. I would guess Wilson views a sack taken as a relatively minor loss compared to risking a turnover through a bad pass. I would also guess few quarterbacks have ever matched his tendency to get sacked while leading. 129 of his 299 career sacks have occurred while the Seahawks were leading, in only 1,169 pass attempts, for a pretty wicked 10.8% career sack rate while ahead. Something to watch for if Seattle creates but fails to maintain a lead. Managing the game may be Wilson’s greatest weakness. As ScramblersPreviously great all-time scramblers, Prescott and Wilson are now reluctant scramblers. Prescott, in particular, really stopped scrambling effectively following “a major blow to [the] head” in Week 7.Weeks 1-740 attempts for 236 yardsWeeks 9-17 35 attempts for 69 yardsThe Cowboys rushing offense tanked at the exact same time.Weeks 1-719.49 EPA (which would prorate to third place in front of the Panthers)Weeks 9-17-6.74 EPA (. . . to 21st place behind the Dolphins)Wilson has gone the opposite way.Weeks 1-8, 1721 runs for 75 yardsWeeks 9-1646 runs for 301 yardsWeeks 1-8, 17-3.63 EPA (. . . 19th place behind the Browns)Weeks 9-1625.41 EPA (. . . second behind the Rams)I picked out those weeks through intuition, I should note. Facing the Chargers, Wilson seemed to scramble confidently again. In Week 17, he uh throttled down. Also these stats are not opponent adjusted, but they’re not cooked either. I simply followed my intuition and looked. I haven’t time to cook anything but food for myself and my wife. I am perhaps the foremost proponent of the idea that a scrambling quarterback improves the overall rushing attack, and so the above may be loaded with confirmation bias. Criticize away Byron Maxwell Color Rush Jersey , I don’t blame you. Conclusions David Byrne in his inimitable yet often imitated way, um, rapped:Facts are simple and facts are straight...Facts just twist the truth aroundFacts are living turned inside out...Facts continue to change their shapeAnd I was mindful of that ... fact before writing this. That is the fact that facts are often slippery and deceitful. I try to make this column a performance. It is a crowded universe for Seahawks coverage and NFL coverage in general, and I never developed a specialty I could put on my non-existent business card. I want to make following the Seahawks a little more fun and in the time I have I do what I am capable of to achieve that.Saturday’s game will be a performance. What specific talents and abilities prove definitive are impossible to accurately project. I belong to a generation which I think doesn’t much understand performance, and is inclined to thinking that an author writing a bad book, or a director making a bad movie, or a band making a bad song, &c. is a testament to some profound failure of character. Maybe this isn’t a generational thing but a consumer-driven culture thing, but the more you try your very best, the less inclined you are to think others failed by your estimation because of a defect in character. It is incredibly hard to do well at almost anything worth doing, not least because the competition for anything worth doing is crazy tough.Dak Prescott is a damn good quarterback, but he may not be a very good NFL quarterback. He’s not much of a deep passer and that’s little changed in his short career. That is not to say he can’t throw deep or that he won’t throw deep effectively; or that he won’t rush effectively; or that Seattle will clearly have the better performance from their quarterback on Saturday. But in his third season and especially in the second half of that season, Prescott has been throwing short, and short of the sticks; he has cut way down on his scrambling, scrambling less effectively, and leading a much less effective rushing offense; he has bled sacks and fumbles; and that has resulted in a bad individual performance and a bad team performance for the Cowboys offense.Russell Wilson is a damn good quarterback, and he may soon be the best quarterback in the NFL. He was a great deep passer from snap one and is now perhaps the best deep passer in the league. That is not to say he will be effective on Saturday; or that he will run effectively or at all; or that Seattle will clearly have the better performance from their quarterback. But in his seventh season and especially in the second half of that season, Wilson has been throwing deep, or at the sticks if needed; he has found a way to scramble effectively individually and in a manner which helps his overall rushing attack; he has bled sacks and fumbles; and that has resulted in a top ten performance individually and as a part of a top ten offense. That’s goddamn hard to do. Failure is as easy as yielding to gravity. So while I’m here projecting stuff, sizing people up with numbers and rankings, I feel inclined to say: Saturday is another performance. Perhaps the first in a long run of incredible success for Prescott. Perhaps ... nah, Wilson’s gonna kill it. RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle coach Pete Carroll has found a bigger meaning behind an audacious fourth quarter decision by rookie Michael Dickson to run on fourth down out of his own end zone, a play that somehow managed to net a first down. The Seahawks are playing with a style Carroll wants to see and the freedom to try things that might otherwise seem foolish — like a punter running on fourth-and-8 at his own 3 rather than taking a safety like he was supposed to.The result is that the Seahawks having won four of five after Sunday’s 28-14 victory over Detroit, with six of the final nine games at home and Seattle in the thick of the NFC playoff conversation at midseason.“I like to think he showed you our mentality that we trust our guys and we work hard and work at it that you’re going to get faced with opportunities, and I like our guys to be able to improvise well and find the ways to make special things happen,” Carroll said Monday. “We always look for guys who have special qualities and part of that is, the guys who have the background and courage and faculties to make those kinds of decisions.”Dickson’s 9-yard run with 2:18 remaining aside, the Seahawks once again used the formula that has worked for the past five games: play strong defense; control the ball offensively with the run; let Russell Wilson use the pass game efficiently and not as the primary vehicle for Seattle’s offense.Seattle held promising young Detroit running back Kerryon Johnson to 22 yards rushing on just eight carries and limited the Lions to just 34 yards total on the ground. The Seahawks ran 42 times for 176 yards — including Dickson’s run — and had the ball for nearly 35 minutes. Wilson also posted the first perfect passer-rating game in Seahawks history while completing 14 of 17 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns.Wilson’s 17 pass attempts matched the second-fewest of his career. The only time he threw less came in his rookie season when he was 7 of 13 passing against Arizona in a game Seattle won 58-0. He didn’t need to carry the offensive load through the air because of the success Seattle was having on the ground.Chris Carson topped 100 yards rushing for the third time and continues to show the makings of the featured back Seattle has sought since Marshawn Lynch departed. Carson capped his day with a 7-yard TD run in the fourth quarter while bowling over defenders at the goal line. The play gave Seattle a 28-7 lead.Carson is finding success running the ball because Seattle’s offensive line continues to play at a high level not seen from the Seahawks since their consecutive seasons winning the NFC championship.“We have more run game than we’ve had in the past. We have more choices in how we go about doing it,” Carroll said. “It’s a different philosophy in how we’re doing it up front and the guys have come along well. We have a very smart, experienced group of guys now to run with. … We have a pretty good setup right now and really we’re just kind of hitting it. I think we have a chance to get a lot better as we move on through the challenges of the season.”NOTES: Carroll said LB K.J. Wright (knee) and TE Ed Dickson (quad/groin) both came through their season debuts without issue on Sunday. Wright had five tackles and played 50 snaps on defense, while Dickson had two catches for 54 yards and a touchdown. … Seattle is now plus-10 in turnover margin. The Seahawks have forced 16 turnovers and committed only six.
  9. under .500 and playing before another small crowd as Derek Jeter spoke in the fifth inning Wednesday night , so he didn’t sugarcoat the state of the franchise 10 months into his tenure as CEO.“We have a ways to go,” Jeter said. “No one is happy with what has happened to this point. But we are headed in the right direction.”The rookie executive bases his optimism in part on a succession of trades that depleted the major league roster but replenished a farm system that had ranked among baseball’s worst.Reliever Brad Ziegler and outfielder Cameron Maybin, two well-traveled veterans who were not part of the Marlins’ long-term plans, were swapped for prospects at last month’s trade deadline. Miami kept All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto and several other young players who could become part of Jeter’s rebuilding effort.“Every move we make with this organization is always to make us better,” Jeter said. “We’re not in a position of just giving players away. So we’re happy with what we added at the trade deadline. We’re also happy with what we were able to keep here.”The Marlins are interested in a long-term contract for Realmuto, which would underscore a change in philosophy under Jeter for a franchise long accustomed to heavy roster turnover.“J.T. in my opinion is at right at the top of the list as being one of the best all-around catchers in baseball,” Jeter said. “He is a guy we would love to have here long term.”The Marlins have relied heavily on young players this season, with decidedly mixed results. One benefit, Jeter said, has been the opportunity to evaluate promising but unproven talent — even players not faring well.“I like to see when guys struggle,” he said. “I want to see how you respond to struggling, because you’re going to struggle at some point.”Not struggling much has been rookie right fielder Brian Anderson, who began the night batting .285 with 37 extra-base hits.“He should be at the top of the list when anybody talks about Rookie of the Year,” said Jeter, who won the award himself in 1996. [Well, home-runs, to be specific...]"Choosing your favorite Paul Goldschmidt home-run is like choosing your favorite child. They’re all wonderful - though it’s probably fortunate I don’t have 209 kids, plus four more in the playoffs... Still, there are some which particularly stand out in the memory. Here are five of the finest, each special in their own way. Like my children. :)The first as a Diamondback: February 26, 2011 vs. RockiesHis first major-league home-run might have had to wait until August 2, but his first in a Diamondback uniform came during spring training that year. It was the first ever game played at the new Salt River Fields complex, but our housemates had a 7-2 lead going into the last of the ninth. Not so fast: with two outs and two men on, Goldschmidt clubbed a three-run homer to tie the game: not the last such heroic in a D-backs jersey Andre Dawson Jersey , of course. Unfortunately, Charlie Blackmon gave the Rockies the lead back in the tenth, off something called a Daniel Stange [hey, it was the second game of spring training], but it was a moment I’ll never forget. Honorable mentionAugust 2, 2011, vs. Giants. His first “proper” HR came in his ninth game, off - who else? - Tim Lincecum. It was the start of a beautiful relationship (Lincecum may disagree). In his time here, Goldy went 15-for-28 with seven HR off Timmeh, a slash of .536/.559/1.357 and an OPS of 1.916Most epic at-bat: May 7, 2013 vs. DodgersWhen Goldschmidt goes really deep into the count, he has pitchers just where he wants them. In 23 PA which lasted 10+ pitches, he is 6-for-14 with eight walks, and three home-runs. None of the last-named were more dramatic than this ninth-inning at-bat against Dodgers’ closer Brandon League, in a tied game with one out and a man on first. After falling behind 1-2 on a pair of swinging strikes, Goldschmidt first laid off a couple of offerings out of the zone, working the count back to full, then fouled off five consecutive pitches on 3-2 from League, before the pitcher blinked, on the eleventh pitch of the plate appearance. Goldschmidt... Not so much. Honorable mentionTen days later, in Miami, Goldy waited until the 13th pitch against Kevin Slowey to homer. But the D-backs were already 3 runs up there. From the League at-bat through June 14, 2015, in eight PAs lasting ten or more pitches Ron Santo Jersey , Paul went: HR, HR, BB, BB, HR, BB, 1B, BB.Biggest game impact: June 7, 2013 vs. GiantsThe Diamondbacks had been entirely stifled by Matt Cain, who had blanked them for seven innings of three-hit ball. His night ended with a lead-off walk to A.J. Pollock in the eighth, and two outs later, Willie Bloomquist drew a walk off Jeremy Affeldt. That brought Goldschmidt to the plate with two men aboard: he took the first couple of pitches for balls, then swatted the third the other way, into about the fourth row of seats in right-field [the goodness starts around the 1:20 mark in the video, if you’re in a rush]. It was worth +66.7% and caused a post-game Affeldt to remark, on the prospect of a possible contract extension, “I just tanked that deal.” Honorable mentionAugust 11, 2011 vs. Astros. Goldschmidt’s second career home-run was also his only one so far as a pinch-hitter. It was a game-tying two-run shot off Mark Melancon with two outs in the ninth, worth +49.1% of Win Probability. The longest: August 26, 2015 vs. CardinalsThis category is not as definitive as the others, because home-run distances are more of a best guess. Even now, Statcast data is sometimes a bit wobbly in this area and subject to revision. For example, this one by Goldschmid was originally reported at 482 feet, before being downgraded to a still impressive 471 feet. Still the very definition of a no-doubter , with a batting practice 92-mph fastball from St. Louis’s John Lackey sent back possessing almost another twenty mph of exit velocity. Said Goldy, with his typical approach of self-effacing understatement: “I was just looking for something I could hit... It was kind of up and in and fortunately I was able to get the barrel there.”Honorable mentionMay 28, 2014 vs. Padres. Though no longer gives access to its pre-Statcast database, owner Greg Rybarczyk was kind enough to send me the Goldschmidt leaders from that era. The top one came off the Padres’ Troy Patton, and was estimated at 470 feet, likely statistically inseparable in distance from the one off Lackey. Purely for amusement - and with a clear caveat about the issue of combining two different methodologies - here’s a best guess of Goldy’s ten longest homers as a Diamondback. Links go to the video. And Goldy had been struggling: he’d had an elbow MRI, batted .171 for September and came in hitless in 17 AB, with seven K’s. He was also 0-for-11 lifetime against Colorado starter, Jon Grey. But cometh the hour, cometh the man. In the first inning, Goldschmidt opened the scoring with a three-run shot, helping dispatch Grey early, and the margin in a wild 11-8 win. Typically, Goldy was more annoyed about his subsequent ABs: “It’s not about me. I was able to get the first guy in, but my next two at-bats, I was not able to get the job done when a sac fly would have scored us some runs. It was kind of frustrating.”Honorable mentionOctober 4, 2011 vs. Brewers. Six years to the day earlier, Goldschmidt had delivered the first grand-slam in Arizona’s playoff history. [The following night, Ryan Roberts hit #2] The only thing probably preventing it from being the winner here, is the D-backs were already 3-1 up.

He was 76.Magowan was a fan ever since going to games at the Polo Grounds in New York and then played a critical role in the team’s success over the last quarter-century.“During a tenuous period for the franchise, Peter stepped up and led the group that purchased the Giants and kept them in San Francisco,” commissioner Rob Manfred said.“With groundbreaking vision, he then guided the effort that resulted in a ballpark that became a landmark for the city.In his 16 seasons of leadership, Peter oversaw a winning, civic-minded ballclub that represented the spirit of San Francisco. The foundation created under his direction helped make the Giants the model club they remain today.”Magowan helped form the ownership group that bought the franchise for $100 million from Bob Lurie in December 1992 to keep the team from moving to Tampa Bay. One of his first moves was signing Barry Bonds to a six-year, $43.5 million free agent deal even before he formally completed the purchase of the team. With the game’s greatest slugger in place, the Giants went on to have great success and Magowan put together a plan to build a privately funded ballpark on the water in downtown San Francisco. That park, the first in years built without direct public funding, opened in 2000 and became one of the jewels of the game.Magowan stepped down following the 2008 season but had put in place the management team that helped bring San Francisco its first World Series title in 2010, followed by championships in 2012 and ’14.“Peter’s mark on the Giants and the San Francisco community can be felt throughout the ballpark Travis Shaw Jersey , in which he was intimately involved in the design and planning and throughout the daily operations of the organization,” Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said.“He set forth a Giants vision to create a winning culture and to serve our fans and the community. Over the past 25 years, we have followed through on his vision and his impact on our community will be felt for decades to come.”Magowan moved to California in 1958, the same year the Giants relocated from New York to San Francisco. He had a successful business, working 37 years for Safeway Inc., including serving as chairman and CEO from 1980-93 before stepping down after taking over the Giants. The Giants made the playoffs four times in Magowan’s 16-year tenure running the Giants, including a trip to the World Series in 2002 before losing in seven games to the Angels.Bonds also went on to set the single-season and career homer records during his tenure with the Giants, hitting 73 homers in 2001 and 762 in his career.“I’m extremely saddened by the passing of Peter Magowan,” Bonds said in a tweet . “I will never forget our first call about the possibility of me coming home to play. He saved baseball for San Francisco and will be greatly missed.”Magowan did significant work in the community, making the Giants the first professional sports team to dedicate an annual game to the fight against AIDS/HIV with the creation of “Until There’s A Cure Day” in 1994. He also formed the Junior Giants program that provided free leagues for kids to play and learn baseball.Magowan also revered the rich history of the franchise he started following as a child, signing Hall of Famer Willie Mays to a lifetime contract and bringing back Hall of Famers Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda to the organization to serve as special advisers. In 2008, he established the Giants Wall of Fame, which serves as a tribute to the organization’s greatest players of the San Francisco era.Magowan will be added to the Wall of Fame on Feb. 9.“Peter Magowan has been a part of my life for a long, long time , first as a fan watching me play in New York and then, remaining a fan when we moved to San Francisco,” Mays said. “Along the way, he became my friend. Peter would call me often to check in. He and Debby cared about me and it was so easy to care about them in return. It’s hard to find the right words just now, but in losing Peter, I’ve lost a great, great friend. He was like my godfather. No one can replace him.”He is survived by wife Debby, five children and 12 grandchildren.“Our family lost a great man today,” the family said in a statement. “We all know how much Peter loved his Giants and San Francisco, and he had that same love and passion for his family. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and we will forever cherish the memories we made together.”
  11. already battled an elbow injury and may end up a hitter rather than a pitcher. The Reds have added veterans such as Sonny Gray and Alex Wood. Wood's contract doesn't run through 2023 J.A. Happ Jersey , but the Reds have a club option that season on Gray. Most essentially, they'll still control Luis Castillo in five years.Yes, the 26-year-old right-hander's ERA rose from 3.12 in 2017 to 4.30 last season, but he remains an intriguing, high-upside hurler.Add guys like right-hander Tyler Mahle and the Reds' clear willingness to take on contracts and expend resources with risk to contend, and this is a rotation to watch.9. Houston Astros2 of 10Houston Astros right-hander Forrest WhitleyChristian Petersen/Getty ImagesThe Houston Astros might not employ the likes of Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in five years. But their starting rotation could be in good hands regardless.Right-handed prospect Forrest Whitley has legitimate ace-level potential. Right-hander Josh James is poised for a breakout after averaging 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings in a 23-frame big league audition.Add right-handers J.B. Bukauskas and Francis Martes (recovering from Tommy John surgery) and the 'Stros have the makings of a strong homegrown rotation, forget whatever free-agent additions they might make in their current win-now window.8. Tampa Bay Rays3 of 10Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Tyler GlasnowMichael Reaves/Getty ImagesThe Tampa Bay Rays will have to open the wallet if they want to extend reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell beyond 2022, after which he's set to hit free agency. Given their small-market profile, that's unlikely.Still, the Rays boast enough up-and-coming arms to pick up the slack.Brent Honeywell was a top prospect on the doorstep of MLB stardom before Tommy John surgery threw a wrench in the works. Barring any setbacks, he should break through this season.Right-hander Tyler Glasnow, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Chris Archer trade last summer, and left-hander Matthew Liberatore could also feature prominently in the Rays rotation. And then there's two-way southpaw prospect Brendan McKay Kendrys Morales Jersey , who might toe the rubber and swing for the fences in the Shohei Ohtani mold.7. Chicago White Sox4 of 10Chicago White Sox right-hander Michael KopechAssociated PressMichael Kopech's Tommy John surgery put his MLB ascent on hold. Assuming he recovers, he'll be slinging triple-digit heat past big league hitters soon.Toss in Dylan Cease, who has surpassed Kopech in the ChiSox's prospect rankings, and you've got something special brewing on the South Side.Right-hander Dane Dunning adds another high-upside arm. And the White Sox have the fifth-least committed payroll this season, per Spotrac, meaning they've got the cash to add an ace or two via free agency in the coming years.6. Los Angeles Dodgers5 of 10Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker BuehlerAssociated PressClayton Kershaw's generational run of dominance won't last forever. Spring training shoulder discomfort doesn't bode well for the ace left-hander as he enters his age-31 season.Anyway, Kershaw is only signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers through 2021.The future is elsewhere, possibly in the form of hard-throwing right-hander Walker Buehler and lefty Julio Urias. Right-hander Dustin May is another interesting, controllable prospect.Mostly, we know the Dodgers aren't afraid to spend and will do so as needed to keep their starting five top-notch in the impending post-Kershaw era.5. Philadelphia Phillies6 of 10Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron NolaRich Schultz/Getty ImagesThe Philadelphia Phillies signed ace Aaron Nola to a $45 million extension with a club option for 2023 on Feb. 14.With that, they locked up the frontman of what should be an excellent rotation in five years.Yes, the Phillies gave up a piece of the future when they included electric righty Sixto Sanchez in the trade that netted catcher J.T. Realmuto. Right-hander Adonis Medina remains a prospect to watch, however. As they sit on the doorstep of inking superstar outfielder Bryce Harper Jesse Barfield Jersey , we know the Phils are willing to spend "stupid" money, as owner John Middleton told Bob Nightengale of USA Today in November. If that includes adding a stud or two to their stable, they should be in excellent shape.4. St. Louis Cardinals7 of 10St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Alex ReyesAssociated PressNews of Carlos Martinez's spring shoulder issues isn't excellent for the St. Louis Cardinals. Injuries have kept Alex Reyes' flight to MLB stardom stalled on the tarmac.Plus, the Cards sent Luke Weaver to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Paul Goldschmidt trade.Still, under a best-case scenario, the five-years-hence Redbirds could feature a rotation fronted by Martinez and Reyes along with righties Dakota Hudson and Jack Flaherty. The Cards could also add ancillary pieces via free agency (they aren't huge spenders, but they are willing to spend) or from their perennially fertile farm system.3. Detroit Tigers8 of 10Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey MizeMark Cunningham/Getty ImagesThe Detroit Tigers are in the beginning phases of what should be a protracted rebuild. That said, they've got the makings of a superlative future rotation.Right-handers Casey Mize and Matt Manning both check in as top-50 prospects. Fellow righties Franklin Perez, Alex Faedo and Beau Burrows could fill out an all-homegrown rotation. That probably won't happen because not all prospects pan out. But when the time comes, the Tigers will be ready to spend. Detroit isn't afraid to hand out massive contracts. Just ask Miguel Cabrera, who will earn $30 million or more every season through at least 2023, when he'll be 40 years old.The point is, Detroit has burgeoning arms in the pipeline and the ability to open its wallet when the moment is right...a potent combination.2. San Diego Padres9 of 10San Diego Padres left-hander MacKenzie GoreAssociated PressLeft-hander MacKenzie Gore looks like an ace in the offing. Right-hander Chris Paddack also rates as a top-50 prospect. Lefty Adrian Morejon and right-hander Luis Patino are on the horizon. Righty Cal Quantrill is close to MLB-ready.All of this is good news for the San Diego Padres.Want some better news for the Friars and their fans? The Pads just shelled out $300 million over 10 years for superstar infielder Manny Machado. Clearly , the Padres are ramping up to contend and spend what it takes to do so.That could mean luring any number of free-agent hurlers to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. With a stacked farm system and a suddenly open checkbook, San Diego could soon build a starting five capable of bringing home the first title in franchise history.1. Atlanta Braves10 of 10Atlanta Braves right-hander Ian AndersonAssociated PressThe Atlanta Braves boast an embarrassment of pitching riches in their farm system, which could make their surprise 2018 National League East title merely the beginning of a nascent run of excellence.Left-hander Sean Newcomb has arrived on the scene and should soon be followed by the likes of righties Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Touki Toussaint, Mike Soroka and Bryse Wilson and lefty Luiz Gohara.Other than Anderson, all of the above sipped their MLB cups of coffee last season. The Braves may not need to sign a big-ticket free agent to field a strong starting five, but they could look to trade from their surplus of arms at some point to acquire one.Either way, Atlanta is operating from a position of strength now and into the future. Fangraphs also took a stab at it. beat-writer Joe Frisaro tweeted that 8-10 teams had already inquired. Also on Wednesday, one of those leading teams was rumored to have already made an aggressive offer on the All-Star backstop. In another tweet, Mish added that the team is asking for a high-end pitching prospect and position player in exchange for the face of the franchise. Jon Heyman was quick with a rebuttal, saying his source denied the Braves had made an offer. The New York Post identified the Mets as a team in need of a catcher but also wondered if the team has the prospects necessary to make the deal. The Score suggested Hialeah-native Manny Machado could be a fit in Miami.Meanwhile in MiamiWhile all of this was going on, Marlins President of Business Operations Chip Bowers tweeted new pictures of work being done at the ballpark. Later in that same thread, Bowers also mentioned the plans for the areas pictured there. Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey

On the mound Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey , the team survived the Yankees with the bullpen's best bend-but-don't-break effort.Like whenSuicide Squadhit theaters, "Red Sox Playoff Bullpen" played out almost exactly as poorly everyone thought it would. In Game 1, Sale handed off a 5-2 lead after 5.1 innings, and Boston escaped witha 5-4 victory. In a Game 2 loss, Price melted down early and the bullpen allowed another three runs. As they closed out the series in Game 4, the Red Sox turned to Sale instead of a reliever for the eighth inning before handing off a 4-1 lead to Kimbrel for the ninth. He loaded the bases and allowed a warning-track shot that with a few more feet would have won the game for New York Sox prevailed 4-3.The whole ordeal was like watching Han, Luke and Leia trapped in the trash compactor, every next thing pointing towards an epic disaster before some miracle pulls them out of trouble. It could be a relative unknown who can be the rock Boston will need in the tightest moments against Houston.Ryan Brasier started this season in Triple-A Pawtucket after spending last year in Japan. With the fans in Yankee Stadium itching and scratching, looking for any bit of hope to erupt into pandemonium, Brasier shut down the Yankees in the seventh of Game 4. He finished the series with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings, allowing no runs and earning the trust of manager Alex Cora in high-leverage situations. He'd spent nearly five seasons toiling around baseball before finding himself in the middle of a high-tension playoff series, once cursing at Gary Sanchez, telling the Yankees catcher to get back in the box before blowing him away on a 97-mph fastball.Cora will need Brasier and the bullpen in the ALCS, another change from Boston's regular-season reality."We work differently than other teams," Cora said during a press conference ahead of Game 1 of the ALDS. "We relied on our starters throughout the season. They carry us. We felt that on a nightly basis they were going to give us a chance to win five innings Joey Rickard Jersey , six innings, whatever. They were very consistent about it."Sale, Nathan Eovaldi in Game 2 and Rick Porcello in Game 4 gave Cora effective starts in the ALDS. But he'll want more from Price than the 1.2 innings he got in Game 2. In many ways, the Red Sox's chances hinge on Price finding form. Cora is committed to the 33-year-old left-hander sticking in the rotation, telling that he believes his star pitcher only needed to make some mechanical adjustments."There were a few things I noticed that he's gotten away from [his] last few starts," Cora said. "Hopefully he can make that adjustment. ... I do feel that with that adjustment, he'll be back to being the guy who pitched in the middle of the summer, and he'll dominate again."Rookie manager Alex Cora was a bench coach for the Astros last season.Elise Amendola/Associated PressCora himself is in his first postseason as an MLB manager and did not excel as a playoff player hit .154 over 26 at-bats in six series. But he was the shining light for Boston against the Yankees, seemingly unable to make a bad decision. The Red Sox have seen the Astros before, but nobody knows them better than Cora, who was Houston's bench coach during their World Series run last season.Following multiple seasons when many felt former skipper John Farrell was not aggressive enough in his managerial style, Cora has flipped the script. His decision to sub in Brock Holt and Rafael Devers for Ian Kinsler and Eduardo Nunez in Game 3 of the ALDS paid dividends, as did having Sale come in to set up Kimbrel in Game 4."I'm trying to remember some things that I told [Cora] that I wish I wouldn't have," Houston manager AJ Hinch said to the media Wednesday before his team's first workout."He was obviously right next to me every step of the way. As a bench coach, you're kind of involved in everything , but maybe master of nothing when it comes to being in charge."Houston is the favorite to win the series, topping Boston on paper in the bullpen and the rotation while featuring a comparable lineup. Several things will need to break the Sox's way in order for them to move onto the World Series. And if the Red Sox didn't like what pundits were saying before the Yankees, they won't like what they hear as they prepare to face Houston. But the rematch of last year's ALDS is set, and this time, the stakes are higher."We're ready for another shot," Porcello said. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Padres are getting closer to getting Manny Machado in uniform and on the field.San Diego announced its $300 million, 10-year contract with the All-Star infielder on Thursday, more than two days after the deal was agreed to.Machado will be introduced Friday morning at spring training in Peoria, Arizona. Manager Andy Green said he hopes to get the 26-year-old superstar on the field for an afternoon workout. The agreement, the largest for a free agent in big league history, allows Machado to opt out after the 2023 season, a point at which he will have received $150 million and be 31 years old.“Manny Machado is a generational talent, and we’re ecstatic that he’s chosen to spend his prime years in a San Diego Padres uniform,” Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler and general partner Peter Seidler said in a joint statement. “This momentous agreement speaks volumes to the direction of our organization, as well as our commitment to bringing a World Series championship to the Friar Faithful and the City of San Diego.”Machado gets a $20 million signing bonus Tim Beckham Jersey , payable within 30 days of the deal’s approval by the commissioner’s office, $10 million this season and $30 million in each of the remaining seasons. Machado is a Florida resident, and the signing bonus will not be subject to income tax in California, which has a top rate of 12.3 percent.Machado can pick six teams annually he can’t be traded to without his consent. He gets a hotel suite on road trips and has the right to purchase premium tickets at Petco Park. His deal is the second-largest in baseball history behind the $325 million, 13-year contract outfielder Giancarlo Stanton agreed to with Miami before the 2015 season. To make room for Machado on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred right-hander Dinelson Lamet to the 60-day injured list.General manager A.J. Preller said Machado “is one of the truly elite players in baseball and impacts the game on both sides of the ball. The resume that Manny has built at such a young age puts him in an exclusive club of big-league talent, and we feel fortunate to have the support of Ron, Peter and the entire ownership group to make this deal possible.”The GM called it “a landmark signing” and added that the organization believes Machado “is the right player at the right time for us. His combination of youth, experience and ability makes him a perfect fit for the Padres both now and in the future as we work to build a perennial contender at the major league level.”Machado is expected to fill the team’s gaping need at third base. He began last year with Baltimore, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers after the All-Star break and struck out to end the World Series loss to Boston.Machado hit .297 last year and set career bests with 37 homers and 107 RBIs. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, he has a .282 career average with 175 homers and 513 RBIs in seven big league seasons. He caused a stir during the NL Championship Series last October when he failed to run out a grounder and later said: “Obviously I’m not going to change, I’m not the type of player that’s going to be ‘Johnny Hustle’ and run down the line and slide to first base.”

Boston has not yet posted individual game prices on its website. CHICAGO (AP) — Jon Jay sees the rebuilding Chicago White Sox poised for big things with promising young players. He’s looking forward to being a part of it.“It’s a great organization, a great city,” he said. The free agent outfielder and the White Sox finalized a $4 million , one-year contract on Thursday. The 33-year-old played for Kansas City and Arizona last season, batting .268 with three homers and 40 RBIs in 143 games. He also made at least 24 starts at each spot in the outfield. The addition gives the White Sox another veteran hitter after they struck out 1,594 times last season, tops in the majors. Jay also is friends with slugger Manny Machado, one of Chicago’s top targets in free agency.“Manny’s going to do what’s best for his family,” Jay said. “That’s going to be up to them, privately. I haven’t been involved in any of that. Those are their matters. Let’s see how everything shakes out. Obviously James Shields Jersey , would we love to have Manny Machado on the team? Absolutely. The guy is unbelievable. … Who knows what is going to happen?”Chicago also acquired Yonder Alonso — Machado’s brother-in-law — from Cleveland last month. But general manager Rick Hahn insisted the White Sox brought them in because of their attributes, not recruiting usefulness.“We feel that they make us better in 2019 and have the potential to have a lasting impact on what we’re trying to build for the long term,” Hahn said. “I’m not going to get into the relationships they have with other players throughout the game. It’s certainly a positive, but it’s by no means a reason to make a move to acquire either player.”Jay, a Miami native, is a .285 career hitter in nine years in the majors. He made his debut with St. Louis in 2010 and helped the crosstown Cubs win the NL Central in 2017.Chicago cleared a roster spot for Jay by designating outfielder Charlie Tilson for assignment.
  14. The Boston Red Sox announced they have reached agreements on contracts for the 2019 season with 17 players Alex Colome Jersey , including outfielder Andrew Benintendi and third baseman Rafael Devers.Financial terms were not disclosed. One season after he finished second in the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year voting,Benintendi hit .290/.366/.465 with an .830 OPS of which established new career highs. He added 16 home runs, 41 doubles, six triples and 87 RBI in 148 games. The 24-year-old helped Boston win the World Series for the first time since 2013 by hitting .268 with four doubles and five RBI in 14 postseason contests.Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Devers turned heads in 2018. Although the infielder hit just .240 in 121 appearances, he recorded 21 round-trippers, 24 doubles and 66 RBI as well as a .731 OPS.LikeBenintendi, Devers played a key role in Boston's championship run. The infielder hit .294 with one home run and nine RBI in 11 playoff games last year. The team won't lose eitherto free agency anytime soon. NeitherBenintendi (under club control through 2022) nor Devers (2023) have reached arbitration. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper is gone from the Nationals to the Phillies after agreeing to a record 13-year , $330 million contract. But he’s is still a looming presence in Washington’s clubhouse as the team begins to move on without the star who played with them since 2012 at just 19.“He used to be right here,” third baseman Anthony Rendon said motioning to Harper’s old locker Friday morning. “And all you guys used to be in this corner all the time when he was here. And now even though he’s not here y’all are still in this corner.”And so it went with much of the talk in Washington’s clubhouse centering around the six-time All-Star and 2015 National League MVP, who had long been a face of the franchise. While it had been less than 24 hours since Harper had agreed to the deal, the Nationals had known for quite some time that he wouldn’t be wearing their uniform this season. And manager Dave Martinez acknowledged that being without him this spring training has taken some getting used to.“It’s been a little different,” he said. “I’ve had a really good relationship with Harp and we talked all the time. So in that aspect it is different especially for me.”No one tried to pretend like his departure wasn’t a big deal. They just choose to look ahead instead of lamenting what they lost.“Our focus is on us and what we need to do,” Martinez said. “I said that coming into spring training. Regardless of what happens with Harp, I’ve got to focus on the 58 guys we have in camp and get ready for the season.”Outfielder Adam Eaton knows everyone is wondering how this team will deal with the loss of Harper and fare without him. He said there will be no big talks or grand proclamations in the wake of the change. It will just be business as usual.“Just being a professional,” he said. “Everybody’s got to consider that. When you come into camp the guys that are surrounding you and the guys that are in the seats in the clubhouse, just play with them and get better with them.”They won’t have a lot of time to miss him. The first two of 19 regular season games against Philadelphia are scheduled for April 2-3 in Washington Marcell Ozuna Jersey , which is the team’s second series of the year.“It’s kind of tough that he’s going to an NL East team but we’ll get to see more of him,” Eaton said. “He’s had his part in putting the Nationals where they are and to be able to see him is kind of cool.”Teammate Trea Turner is bracing for what it will be like when he first sees Harper in his Phillies uniform and noted how strange it was to see Andrew McCutchen don another teams colors last season after nine seasons with the Pirates.“You see Andrew McCutchen leave Pittsburgh, it was weird,” he said of Harper’s new teammate. “It’s definitely going to be weird. He’s been here for a long time and making the change over there is definitely going to be different, especially in the division. But it’s going to be interesting when we see him over there.”Eaton agreed and said it won’t only be the Nationals and their supporters that will have to adjust to Harper playing in Philadelphia.“This is not just for Nationals fans. I don’t care if you’re a Cubs fan or a Padres fan or a Seattle fan, seeing Bryce Harper in a different jersey will be different,” he said. The Nationals, who made the postseason in four of Harper’s seven seasons, believe they have another good team this year and like the challenge they’ll face within a division they believe has improved from top to bottom — not just in Philadelphia.“For me every team’s gotten better Miles Mikolas Jersey ,” Martinez said. “If you look on paper at what everybody’s done, our division is going to be really, really strong.”That, they say is another reason why they can’t spend time worrying about Harper’s departure and need to move forward.“Our focus is on the here and now and trying to win our day,” Martinez said.

    Jose Pirela Jersey

ARLINGTON Jose Pirela Jersey , Texas (AP) — Before Ila Borders became the first female pitcher to start a college baseball game or pitch professionally in an independent league in the 1990s, the lefty felt almost like she was in a fight just to be on the field.“When I was playing, they tried to do everything possible to not let me play, or they didn’t want the media attention, and it was an uphill battle,” Borders said Friday. “Now I feel like people are searching and looking and trying to develop that talent. For me, that’s an awesome feeling and it’s great to see.”Borders is one of the coaches this weekend for MLB Grit, an inaugural high school invitational baseball tournament for 64 teenage girls from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico that were split into four teams to play four games each.On Friday, which was International Women’s Day, each team got to play a game in a big league ballpark — Globe Life Park, the home of the Texas Rangers. The rest of the games will be at the Rangers MLB Youth Academy in Dallas.Ashton Lansdell, an 18-year-old pitcher/shortstop who was on Team USA in the Women’s Baseball Cup last summer, hopes to play college baseball next season.Lansdell has been playing baseball since she was 4 years old — “I’ve been told since when I was like really young to go play softball, I just straight-up said ‘No’,” she said — and started pitching when she was about 10.“My travel team needed some pitching, and they just put me on the mound,” she said. “They just threw me on there and I had good mechanics from watching people and being on the field so much. Ever since then, I’ve upped my game, my mechanics and velocity.”The right-handed senior for the varsity team at Wheeler High in Marietta, Georgia, now throws four-seam and two-seam fastballs, with a velocity of just more than 80 mph Kevin Kiermaier Jersey , plus has two different changeups, a slider and a curveball.Delaney Dunham, a 15-year-old freshman left-handed pitcher/outfielder from Dayton, Texas, switched from softball to baseball when she was 12 years old and her goal is to play one day for Team USA. She missed a tournament with her Barbers High baseball team this weekend.Along with the four games each team will play, the girls at MLB Grit will go through special developmental presentations this weekend, including tips on the collegiate recruiting process and information about careers within baseball.MLB is going into its third year of the Trailblazer Series for girls at its Compton Youth Academy in California, and last summer had its first Breakthrough Series for high school girls at the Dodgertown spring training complex in Vero Beach, Florida. What made MLB Grit different from those events was having more game competition for the girls.“Most of them are the only girls on their teams,” said Kim Ng, MLB’s senior vice president for baseball and softball development. “This is one of the few opportunities they actually get to compete against other girls, which is also why is fairly unique. “Ng said youth participation is one of Commissioner Rob Manfred’s most important agenda and platform items.“The first thing is No. 1, just to provide opportunity. No. 2, we need to shed light on these kids, on these young women and girls,” Ng said. “We think this is the best game in the world, and we don’t want to discourage anybody from playing it.”Allison Schroder is a 16-year-old junior from Fruitvale, British Columbia who played for Team Canada last summer and is on her high school team that competes in the state of Washington.“I’d love to play baseball at a college level,” said Schroder, a pitcher and shortstop. “Just to be able to play the game while getting an education has always been a good goal of mine.”Borders is among nine former and current players and staff from the USA Baseball Women’s National team instructing the girls. The other coaches are former MLB pitcher Marvin Freeman, infielder Homer Bush who was a member of the 1998 World Series champion New York Yankees and Morehouse College coach Antonio Grissom.Grissom, the brother of former big leaguer Marquis Grissom, was also part of the Breakthrough Series last summer and has been impressed by what he’s seen.“These girls are fundamentally sound Alex Cobb Jersey ,” he said. “In terms of the velocity and the strength, there’s a separation there. But in terms of the technique and fundamentals, they’re pretty sound. They’re going to make the routine plays, they’re going to throw strikes. Some of their secondary stuff is above average for their age, so that gives them a chance.” SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Colorado Rockies will be without the reliever who boasted he could strike out Babe Ruth, but they believe the bridge between their solid starting rotation and premier closer Wade Davis remains sturdy.Colorado is counting on a veteran bullpen group that includes Scott Oberg, Seunghwan Oh, Chris Rusin and Bryan Shaw to step up the way Adam Ottavino did in 2018, when his career year with the Rockies led to a three-year, $27 million free agent deal with the New York Yankees.“I think we have a lot of good arms and a lot of talented guys back there,” catcher Chris Iannetta said.“I think we can piece it together and be really good. Guys have good years. Guys have bad years. I don’t think anyone expected Adam to have the year that he had last year after the previous year. It happens all the time.”Oberg had a strong second half last season, Oh pitched well after being acquired at the trade deadline and the Rockies are counting on a return to normalcy by Shaw, Rusin, Jake McGee and Mike Dunn. The Rockies’ bullpen had a 4.62 ERA last season, 13th in the league and a number that must be improved upon so as not to squander the quality starts inherited from a rotation that includes Kyle Freeland, German Marquez and Tyler Anderson.Davis had a franchise-record and league- and career-high 43 of the Rockies’ franchise-record 51 saves last season, his first in Colorado.Ottavino and Oberg served as the primary setup men last year. Ottavino was 6-4 with six saves, a 2.43 ERA and a rate of 13 strikeouts per nine innings, thus the Ruth reference he made after signing with the Yankees.“He was great for us and that’s a tough piece to fill, but we are definitely capable of it,” Davis said. The right-handed Oberg, a top candidate to inherit more of Ottavino’s workload Wade Boggs Jersey , was 8-1 with 2.45 ERA and was scored upon in only four of his final 34 outings. He had a streak of 11 straight scoreless appearances in August and September as the Rockies moved to a second straight postseason appearance. He limited righty hitters to a .185 batting average.“Collectively, I think we are going to be fine,” Oberg said. “Those are some big shoes, but we have a really talented group down there. There is going to be all eight of us pulling together down there.”Oberg has made a team-high 210 relief appearances since his 2015 debut, but he is not the only workhorse returning.Shaw has appeared in 503 games since 2012, tied for the most in the majors, and he is looking to build on a second half in which he went 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 20 appearances after being reinstated from the disabled list July 11.The Rockies hope to return Shaw to the high-leverage role he had in Arizona and Cleveland before his outlier of 2018, when he was 4-6 with a 5.93 ERA. He has a career 3.43 ERA.“Hopefully, better performances by myself will be a big contributing factor to filling his (Ottavino’s) innings,” Shaw said.Shaw, a right-hander, spent time in the offseason at the Driveline Baseball training center in Washington, an outfit that is heavily immersed in biometrics and data analysis, spin rates, effective arm angles and more.Former Cleveland teammate Trevor Bauer has long been a proponent, and the two talked this offseason.“Got some good info,” Shaw said. “The info I got from them kind of correlated with some things we were seeing and talking about here. Hopefully the data we took from them we can implement this year and get going.”Oh was 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in 25 appearances after being acquired from Toronto at the trade deadline.“I try to not think that we are filling the hole for someone just because that person left,” Oh said through a translator. “It is more about always being ready whenever the game situations calls us. So my job is to be prepared every day.”Iannetta sees “a ton of talent” in the bullpen.“You need guys to seize the moment,” Iannetta said. “There is opportunity back there to solidify yourself as a back-end reliever. Everyone has skills. Even if you had a bad year, that’s baseball. See who rises to the top.”
