  1. under .500 and playing before another small crowd as Derek Jeter spoke in the fifth inning Wednesday night , so he didn’t sugarcoat the state of the franchise 10 months into his tenure as CEO.“We have a ways to go,” Jeter said. “No one is happy with what has happened to this point. But we are headed in the right direction.”The rookie executive bases his optimism in part on a succession of trades that depleted the major league roster but replenished a farm system that had ranked among baseball’s worst.Reliever Brad Ziegler and outfielder Cameron Maybin, two well-traveled veterans who were not part of the Marlins’ long-term plans, were swapped for prospects at last month’s trade deadline. Miami kept All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto and several other young players who could become part of Jeter’s rebuilding effort.“Every move we make with this organization is always to make us better,” Jeter said. “We’re not in a position of just giving players away. So we’re happy with what we added at the trade deadline. We’re also happy with what we were able to keep here.”The Marlins are interested in a long-term contract for Realmuto, which would underscore a change in philosophy under Jeter for a franchise long accustomed to heavy roster turnover.“J.T. in my opinion is at right at the top of the list as being one of the best all-around catchers in baseball,” Jeter said. “He is a guy we would love to have here long term.”The Marlins have relied heavily on young players this season, with decidedly mixed results. One benefit, Jeter said, has been the opportunity to evaluate promising but unproven talent — even players not faring well.“I like to see when guys struggle,” he said. “I want to see how you respond to struggling, because you’re going to struggle at some point.”Not struggling much has been rookie right fielder Brian Anderson, who began the night batting .285 with 37 extra-base hits.“He should be at the top of the list when anybody talks about Rookie of the Year,” said Jeter, who won the award himself in 1996. [Well, home-runs, to be specific...]"Choosing your favorite Paul Goldschmidt home-run is like choosing your favorite child. They’re all wonderful - though it’s probably fortunate I don’t have 209 kids, plus four more in the playoffs... Still, there are some which particularly stand out in the memory. Here are five of the finest, each special in their own way. Like my children. :)The first as a Diamondback: February 26, 2011 vs. RockiesHis first major-league home-run might have had to wait until August 2, but his first in a Diamondback uniform came during spring training that year. It was the first ever game played at the new Salt River Fields complex, but our housemates had a 7-2 lead going into the last of the ninth. Not so fast: with two outs and two men on, Goldschmidt clubbed a three-run homer to tie the game: not the last such heroic in a D-backs jersey Andre Dawson Jersey , of course. Unfortunately, Charlie Blackmon gave the Rockies the lead back in the tenth, off something called a Daniel Stange [hey, it was the second game of spring training], but it was a moment I’ll never forget. Honorable mentionAugust 2, 2011, vs. Giants. His first “proper” HR came in his ninth game, off - who else? - Tim Lincecum. It was the start of a beautiful relationship (Lincecum may disagree). In his time here, Goldy went 15-for-28 with seven HR off Timmeh, a slash of .536/.559/1.357 and an OPS of 1.916Most epic at-bat: May 7, 2013 vs. DodgersWhen Goldschmidt goes really deep into the count, he has pitchers just where he wants them. In 23 PA which lasted 10+ pitches, he is 6-for-14 with eight walks, and three home-runs. None of the last-named were more dramatic than this ninth-inning at-bat against Dodgers’ closer Brandon League, in a tied game with one out and a man on first. After falling behind 1-2 on a pair of swinging strikes, Goldschmidt first laid off a couple of offerings out of the zone, working the count back to full, then fouled off five consecutive pitches on 3-2 from League, before the pitcher blinked, on the eleventh pitch of the plate appearance. Goldschmidt... Not so much. Honorable mentionTen days later, in Miami, Goldy waited until the 13th pitch against Kevin Slowey to homer. But the D-backs were already 3 runs up there. From the League at-bat through June 14, 2015, in eight PAs lasting ten or more pitches Ron Santo Jersey , Paul went: HR, HR, BB, BB, HR, BB, 1B, BB.Biggest game impact: June 7, 2013 vs. GiantsThe Diamondbacks had been entirely stifled by Matt Cain, who had blanked them for seven innings of three-hit ball. His night ended with a lead-off walk to A.J. Pollock in the eighth, and two outs later, Willie Bloomquist drew a walk off Jeremy Affeldt. That brought Goldschmidt to the plate with two men aboard: he took the first couple of pitches for balls, then swatted the third the other way, into about the fourth row of seats in right-field [the goodness starts around the 1:20 mark in the video, if you’re in a rush]. It was worth +66.7% and caused a post-game Affeldt to remark, on the prospect of a possible contract extension, “I just tanked that deal.” Honorable mentionAugust 11, 2011 vs. Astros. Goldschmidt’s second career home-run was also his only one so far as a pinch-hitter. It was a game-tying two-run shot off Mark Melancon with two outs in the ninth, worth +49.1% of Win Probability. The longest: August 26, 2015 vs. CardinalsThis category is not as definitive as the others, because home-run distances are more of a best guess. Even now, Statcast data is sometimes a bit wobbly in this area and subject to revision. For example, this one by Goldschmid was originally reported at 482 feet, before being downgraded to a still impressive 471 feet. Still the very definition of a no-doubter , with a batting practice 92-mph fastball from St. Louis’s John Lackey sent back possessing almost another twenty mph of exit velocity. Said Goldy, with his typical approach of self-effacing understatement: “I was just looking for something I could hit... It was kind of up and in and fortunately I was able to get the barrel there.”Honorable mentionMay 28, 2014 vs. Padres. Though no longer gives access to its pre-Statcast database, owner Greg Rybarczyk was kind enough to send me the Goldschmidt leaders from that era. The top one came off the Padres’ Troy Patton, and was estimated at 470 feet, likely statistically inseparable in distance from the one off Lackey. Purely for amusement - and with a clear caveat about the issue of combining two different methodologies - here’s a best guess of Goldy’s ten longest homers as a Diamondback. Links go to the video. Enjoy.471 ft - 2015-08-26 off John Lackey (STL)470 ft - 2014-05-28 off Troy Patton (SDP)466 ft - 2015-08-28 off Pat Venditte (OAK)453 ft - 2017-05-14 off Ivan Nova (PIT)452 ft - 2017-09-10 off Luis Perdomo (SDP)452 ft - 2012-05-27 off Randy Wolf (MIL)450 ft - 2018-06-09 off Chad Bettis (COL)450 ft - 2011-08-11 off Mark Melancon (HOU)448 ft - 2017-06-11 off Rob Scahill (MIL)447 ft - 2013-06-21 off Curtis Partch (CIN)Most memorable post-season shot: October 4, 2017 vs. RockiesThe first playoff game at Chase since 2011 was a win or go home situation for both sides. And Goldy had been struggling: he’d had an elbow MRI, batted .171 for September and came in hitless in 17 AB, with seven K’s. He was also 0-for-11 lifetime against Colorado starter, Jon Grey. But cometh the hour, cometh the man. In the first inning, Goldschmidt opened the scoring with a three-run shot, helping dispatch Grey early, and the margin in a wild 11-8 win. Typically, Goldy was more annoyed about his subsequent ABs: “It’s not about me. I was able to get the first guy in, but my next two at-bats, I was not able to get the job done when a sac fly would have scored us some runs. It was kind of frustrating.”Honorable mentionOctober 4, 2011 vs. Brewers. Six years to the day earlier, Goldschmidt had delivered the first grand-slam in Arizona’s playoff history. [The following night, Ryan Roberts hit #2] The only thing probably preventing it from being the winner here, is the D-backs were already 3-1 up.

He was 76.Magowan was a fan ever since going to games at the Polo Grounds in New York and then played a critical role in the team’s success over the last quarter-century.“During a tenuous period for the franchise, Peter stepped up and led the group that purchased the Giants and kept them in San Francisco,” commissioner Rob Manfred said.“With groundbreaking vision, he then guided the effort that resulted in a ballpark that became a landmark for the city.In his 16 seasons of leadership, Peter oversaw a winning, civic-minded ballclub that represented the spirit of San Francisco. The foundation created under his direction helped make the Giants the model club they remain today.”Magowan helped form the ownership group that bought the franchise for $100 million from Bob Lurie in December 1992 to keep the team from moving to Tampa Bay. One of his first moves was signing Barry Bonds to a six-year, $43.5 million free agent deal even before he formally completed the purchase of the team. With the game’s greatest slugger in place, the Giants went on to have great success and Magowan put together a plan to build a privately funded ballpark on the water in downtown San Francisco. That park, the first in years built without direct public funding, opened in 2000 and became one of the jewels of the game.Magowan stepped down following the 2008 season but had put in place the management team that helped bring San Francisco its first World Series title in 2010, followed by championships in 2012 and ’14.“Peter’s mark on the Giants and the San Francisco community can be felt throughout the ballpark Travis Shaw Jersey , in which he was intimately involved in the design and planning and throughout the daily operations of the organization,” Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said.“He set forth a Giants vision to create a winning culture and to serve our fans and the community. Over the past 25 years, we have followed through on his vision and his impact on our community will be felt for decades to come.”Magowan moved to California in 1958, the same year the Giants relocated from New York to San Francisco. He had a successful business, working 37 years for Safeway Inc., including serving as chairman and CEO from 1980-93 before stepping down after taking over the Giants. The Giants made the playoffs four times in Magowan’s 16-year tenure running the Giants, including a trip to the World Series in 2002 before losing in seven games to the Angels.Bonds also went on to set the single-season and career homer records during his tenure with the Giants, hitting 73 homers in 2001 and 762 in his career.“I’m extremely saddened by the passing of Peter Magowan,” Bonds said in a tweet . “I will never forget our first call about the possibility of me coming home to play. He saved baseball for San Francisco and will be greatly missed.”Magowan did significant work in the community, making the Giants the first professional sports team to dedicate an annual game to the fight against AIDS/HIV with the creation of “Until There’s A Cure Day” in 1994. He also formed the Junior Giants program that provided free leagues for kids to play and learn baseball.Magowan also revered the rich history of the franchise he started following as a child, signing Hall of Famer Willie Mays to a lifetime contract and bringing back Hall of Famers Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda to the organization to serve as special advisers. In 2008, he established the Giants Wall of Fame, which serves as a tribute to the organization’s greatest players of the San Francisco era.Magowan will be added to the Wall of Fame on Feb. 9.“Peter Magowan has been a part of my life for a long, long time , first as a fan watching me play in New York and then, remaining a fan when we moved to San Francisco,” Mays said. “Along the way, he became my friend. Peter would call me often to check in. He and Debby cared about me and it was so easy to care about them in return. It’s hard to find the right words just now, but in losing Peter, I’ve lost a great, great friend. He was like my godfather. No one can replace him.”He is survived by wife Debby, five children and 12 grandchildren.“Our family lost a great man today,” the family said in a statement. “We all know how much Peter loved his Giants and San Francisco, and he had that same love and passion for his family. He was so proud of his children and grandchildren, and we will forever cherish the memories we made together.”
  3. already battled an elbow injury and may end up a hitter rather than a pitcher. The Reds have added veterans such as Sonny Gray and Alex Wood. Wood's contract doesn't run through 2023 J.A. Happ Jersey , but the Reds have a club option that season on Gray. Most essentially, they'll still control Luis Castillo in five years.Yes, the 26-year-old right-hander's ERA rose from 3.12 in 2017 to 4.30 last season, but he remains an intriguing, high-upside hurler.Add guys like right-hander Tyler Mahle and the Reds' clear willingness to take on contracts and expend resources with risk to contend, and this is a rotation to watch.9. Houston Astros2 of 10Houston Astros right-hander Forrest WhitleyChristian Petersen/Getty ImagesThe Houston Astros might not employ the likes of Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole in five years. But their starting rotation could be in good hands regardless.Right-handed prospect Forrest Whitley has legitimate ace-level potential. Right-hander Josh James is poised for a breakout after averaging 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings in a 23-frame big league audition.Add right-handers J.B. Bukauskas and Francis Martes (recovering from Tommy John surgery) and the 'Stros have the makings of a strong homegrown rotation, forget whatever free-agent additions they might make in their current win-now window.8. Tampa Bay Rays3 of 10Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Tyler GlasnowMichael Reaves/Getty ImagesThe Tampa Bay Rays will have to open the wallet if they want to extend reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell beyond 2022, after which he's set to hit free agency. Given their small-market profile, that's unlikely.Still, the Rays boast enough up-and-coming arms to pick up the slack.Brent Honeywell was a top prospect on the doorstep of MLB stardom before Tommy John surgery threw a wrench in the works. Barring any setbacks, he should break through this season.Right-hander Tyler Glasnow, acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Chris Archer trade last summer, and left-hander Matthew Liberatore could also feature prominently in the Rays rotation. And then there's two-way southpaw prospect Brendan McKay Kendrys Morales Jersey , who might toe the rubber and swing for the fences in the Shohei Ohtani mold.7. Chicago White Sox4 of 10Chicago White Sox right-hander Michael KopechAssociated PressMichael Kopech's Tommy John surgery put his MLB ascent on hold. Assuming he recovers, he'll be slinging triple-digit heat past big league hitters soon.Toss in Dylan Cease, who has surpassed Kopech in the ChiSox's prospect rankings, and you've got something special brewing on the South Side.Right-hander Dane Dunning adds another high-upside arm. And the White Sox have the fifth-least committed payroll this season, per Spotrac, meaning they've got the cash to add an ace or two via free agency in the coming years.6. Los Angeles Dodgers5 of 10Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Walker BuehlerAssociated PressClayton Kershaw's generational run of dominance won't last forever. Spring training shoulder discomfort doesn't bode well for the ace left-hander as he enters his age-31 season.Anyway, Kershaw is only signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers through 2021.The future is elsewhere, possibly in the form of hard-throwing right-hander Walker Buehler and lefty Julio Urias. Right-hander Dustin May is another interesting, controllable prospect.Mostly, we know the Dodgers aren't afraid to spend and will do so as needed to keep their starting five top-notch in the impending post-Kershaw era.5. Philadelphia Phillies6 of 10Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron NolaRich Schultz/Getty ImagesThe Philadelphia Phillies signed ace Aaron Nola to a $45 million extension with a club option for 2023 on Feb. 14.With that, they locked up the frontman of what should be an excellent rotation in five years.Yes, the Phillies gave up a piece of the future when they included electric righty Sixto Sanchez in the trade that netted catcher J.T. Realmuto. Right-hander Adonis Medina remains a prospect to watch, however. As they sit on the doorstep of inking superstar outfielder Bryce Harper Jesse Barfield Jersey , we know the Phils are willing to spend "stupid" money, as owner John Middleton told Bob Nightengale of USA Today in November. If that includes adding a stud or two to their stable, they should be in excellent shape.4. St. Louis Cardinals7 of 10St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Alex ReyesAssociated PressNews of Carlos Martinez's spring shoulder issues isn't excellent for the St. Louis Cardinals. Injuries have kept Alex Reyes' flight to MLB stardom stalled on the tarmac.Plus, the Cards sent Luke Weaver to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Paul Goldschmidt trade.Still, under a best-case scenario, the five-years-hence Redbirds could feature a rotation fronted by Martinez and Reyes along with righties Dakota Hudson and Jack Flaherty. The Cards could also add ancillary pieces via free agency (they aren't huge spenders, but they are willing to spend) or from their perennially fertile farm system.3. Detroit Tigers8 of 10Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey MizeMark Cunningham/Getty ImagesThe Detroit Tigers are in the beginning phases of what should be a protracted rebuild. That said, they've got the makings of a superlative future rotation.Right-handers Casey Mize and Matt Manning both check in as top-50 prospects. Fellow righties Franklin Perez, Alex Faedo and Beau Burrows could fill out an all-homegrown rotation. That probably won't happen because not all prospects pan out. But when the time comes, the Tigers will be ready to spend. Detroit isn't afraid to hand out massive contracts. Just ask Miguel Cabrera, who will earn $30 million or more every season through at least 2023, when he'll be 40 years old.The point is, Detroit has burgeoning arms in the pipeline and the ability to open its wallet when the moment is right...a potent combination.2. San Diego Padres9 of 10San Diego Padres left-hander MacKenzie GoreAssociated PressLeft-hander MacKenzie Gore looks like an ace in the offing. Right-hander Chris Paddack also rates as a top-50 prospect. Lefty Adrian Morejon and right-hander Luis Patino are on the horizon. Righty Cal Quantrill is close to MLB-ready.All of this is good news for the San Diego Padres.Want some better news for the Friars and their fans? The Pads just shelled out $300 million over 10 years for superstar infielder Manny Machado. Clearly , the Padres are ramping up to contend and spend what it takes to do so.That could mean luring any number of free-agent hurlers to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. With a stacked farm system and a suddenly open checkbook, San Diego could soon build a starting five capable of bringing home the first title in franchise history.1. Atlanta Braves10 of 10Atlanta Braves right-hander Ian AndersonAssociated PressThe Atlanta Braves boast an embarrassment of pitching riches in their farm system, which could make their surprise 2018 National League East title merely the beginning of a nascent run of excellence.Left-hander Sean Newcomb has arrived on the scene and should soon be followed by the likes of righties Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Touki Toussaint, Mike Soroka and Bryse Wilson and lefty Luiz Gohara.Other than Anderson, all of the above sipped their MLB cups of coffee last season. The Braves may not need to sign a big-ticket free agent to field a strong starting five, but they could look to trade from their surplus of arms at some point to acquire one.Either way, Atlanta is operating from a position of strength now and into the future. Realmuto George Bell Jersey , as well what other Fish might get traded. The latest on J.T.Jim Bowden of the Athletic posited deals from the five leading contenders for Realmuto. Fangraphs also took a stab at it. beat-writer Joe Frisaro tweeted that 8-10 teams had already inquired. Also on Wednesday, one of those leading teams was rumored to have already made an aggressive offer on the All-Star backstop. In another tweet, Mish added that the team is asking for a high-end pitching prospect and position player in exchange for the face of the franchise. Jon Heyman was quick with a rebuttal, saying his source denied the Braves had made an offer. The New York Post identified the Mets as a team in need of a catcher but also wondered if the team has the prospects necessary to make the deal. The Score suggested Hialeah-native Manny Machado could be a fit in Miami.Meanwhile in MiamiWhile all of this was going on, Marlins President of Business Operations Chip Bowers tweeted new pictures of work being done at the ballpark. Later in that same thread, Bowers also mentioned the plans for the areas pictured there. Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey

On the mound Ubaldo Jimenez Jersey , the team survived the Yankees with the bullpen's best bend-but-don't-break effort.Like whenSuicide Squadhit theaters, "Red Sox Playoff Bullpen" played out almost exactly as poorly everyone thought it would. In Game 1, Sale handed off a 5-2 lead after 5.1 innings, and Boston escaped witha 5-4 victory. In a Game 2 loss, Price melted down early and the bullpen allowed another three runs. As they closed out the series in Game 4, the Red Sox turned to Sale instead of a reliever for the eighth inning before handing off a 4-1 lead to Kimbrel for the ninth. He loaded the bases and allowed a warning-track shot that with a few more feet would have won the game for New York Sox prevailed 4-3.The whole ordeal was like watching Han, Luke and Leia trapped in the trash compactor, every next thing pointing towards an epic disaster before some miracle pulls them out of trouble. It could be a relative unknown who can be the rock Boston will need in the tightest moments against Houston.Ryan Brasier started this season in Triple-A Pawtucket after spending last year in Japan. With the fans in Yankee Stadium itching and scratching, looking for any bit of hope to erupt into pandemonium, Brasier shut down the Yankees in the seventh of Game 4. He finished the series with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings, allowing no runs and earning the trust of manager Alex Cora in high-leverage situations. He'd spent nearly five seasons toiling around baseball before finding himself in the middle of a high-tension playoff series, once cursing at Gary Sanchez, telling the Yankees catcher to get back in the box before blowing him away on a 97-mph fastball.Cora will need Brasier and the bullpen in the ALCS, another change from Boston's regular-season reality."We work differently than other teams," Cora said during a press conference ahead of Game 1 of the ALDS. "We relied on our starters throughout the season. They carry us. We felt that on a nightly basis they were going to give us a chance to win five innings Joey Rickard Jersey , six innings, whatever. They were very consistent about it."Sale, Nathan Eovaldi in Game 2 and Rick Porcello in Game 4 gave Cora effective starts in the ALDS. But he'll want more from Price than the 1.2 innings he got in Game 2. In many ways, the Red Sox's chances hinge on Price finding form. Cora is committed to the 33-year-old left-hander sticking in the rotation, telling that he believes his star pitcher only needed to make some mechanical adjustments."There were a few things I noticed that he's gotten away from [his] last few starts," Cora said. "Hopefully he can make that adjustment. ... I do feel that with that adjustment, he'll be back to being the guy who pitched in the middle of the summer, and he'll dominate again."Rookie manager Alex Cora was a bench coach for the Astros last season.Elise Amendola/Associated PressCora himself is in his first postseason as an MLB manager and did not excel as a playoff player hit .154 over 26 at-bats in six series. But he was the shining light for Boston against the Yankees, seemingly unable to make a bad decision. The Red Sox have seen the Astros before, but nobody knows them better than Cora, who was Houston's bench coach during their World Series run last season.Following multiple seasons when many felt former skipper John Farrell was not aggressive enough in his managerial style, Cora has flipped the script. His decision to sub in Brock Holt and Rafael Devers for Ian Kinsler and Eduardo Nunez in Game 3 of the ALDS paid dividends, as did having Sale come in to set up Kimbrel in Game 4."I'm trying to remember some things that I told [Cora] that I wish I wouldn't have," Houston manager AJ Hinch said to the media Wednesday before his team's first workout."He was obviously right next to me every step of the way. As a bench coach, you're kind of involved in everything , but maybe master of nothing when it comes to being in charge."Houston is the favorite to win the series, topping Boston on paper in the bullpen and the rotation while featuring a comparable lineup. Several things will need to break the Sox's way in order for them to move onto the World Series. And if the Red Sox didn't like what pundits were saying before the Yankees, they won't like what they hear as they prepare to face Houston. But the rematch of last year's ALDS is set, and this time, the stakes are higher."We're ready for another shot," Porcello said. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Padres are getting closer to getting Manny Machado in uniform and on the field.San Diego announced its $300 million, 10-year contract with the All-Star infielder on Thursday, more than two days after the deal was agreed to.Machado will be introduced Friday morning at spring training in Peoria, Arizona. Manager Andy Green said he hopes to get the 26-year-old superstar on the field for an afternoon workout. The agreement, the largest for a free agent in big league history, allows Machado to opt out after the 2023 season, a point at which he will have received $150 million and be 31 years old.“Manny Machado is a generational talent, and we’re ecstatic that he’s chosen to spend his prime years in a San Diego Padres uniform,” Padres executive chairman Ron Fowler and general partner Peter Seidler said in a joint statement. “This momentous agreement speaks volumes to the direction of our organization, as well as our commitment to bringing a World Series championship to the Friar Faithful and the City of San Diego.”Machado gets a $20 million signing bonus Tim Beckham Jersey , payable within 30 days of the deal’s approval by the commissioner’s office, $10 million this season and $30 million in each of the remaining seasons. Machado is a Florida resident, and the signing bonus will not be subject to income tax in California, which has a top rate of 12.3 percent.Machado can pick six teams annually he can’t be traded to without his consent. He gets a hotel suite on road trips and has the right to purchase premium tickets at Petco Park. His deal is the second-largest in baseball history behind the $325 million, 13-year contract outfielder Giancarlo Stanton agreed to with Miami before the 2015 season. To make room for Machado on the 40-man roster, the Padres transferred right-hander Dinelson Lamet to the 60-day injured list.General manager A.J. Preller said Machado “is one of the truly elite players in baseball and impacts the game on both sides of the ball. The resume that Manny has built at such a young age puts him in an exclusive club of big-league talent, and we feel fortunate to have the support of Ron, Peter and the entire ownership group to make this deal possible.”The GM called it “a landmark signing” and added that the organization believes Machado “is the right player at the right time for us. His combination of youth, experience and ability makes him a perfect fit for the Padres both now and in the future as we work to build a perennial contender at the major league level.”Machado is expected to fill the team’s gaping need at third base. He began last year with Baltimore, was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers after the All-Star break and struck out to end the World Series loss to Boston.Machado hit .297 last year and set career bests with 37 homers and 107 RBIs. A four-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, he has a .282 career average with 175 homers and 513 RBIs in seven big league seasons. He caused a stir during the NL Championship Series last October when he failed to run out a grounder and later said: “Obviously I’m not going to change, I’m not the type of player that’s going to be ‘Johnny Hustle’ and run down the line and slide to first base.”

He’s looking forward to being a part of it.“It’s a great organization, a great city,” he said. The free agent outfielder and the White Sox finalized a $4 million , one-year contract on Thursday. The 33-year-old played for Kansas City and Arizona last season, batting .268 with three homers and 40 RBIs in 143 games. He also made at least 24 starts at each spot in the outfield. The addition gives the White Sox another veteran hitter after they struck out 1,594 times last season, tops in the majors. Jay also is friends with slugger Manny Machado, one of Chicago’s top targets in free agency.“Manny’s going to do what’s best for his family,” Jay said. “That’s going to be up to them, privately. I haven’t been involved in any of that. Those are their matters. Let’s see how everything shakes out. Obviously James Shields Jersey , would we love to have Manny Machado on the team? Absolutely. The guy is unbelievable. … Who knows what is going to happen?”Chicago also acquired Yonder Alonso — Machado’s brother-in-law — from Cleveland last month. But general manager Rick Hahn insisted the White Sox brought them in because of their attributes, not recruiting usefulness.“We feel that they make us better in 2019 and have the potential to have a lasting impact on what we’re trying to build for the long term,” Hahn said. “I’m not going to get into the relationships they have with other players throughout the game. It’s certainly a positive, but it’s by no means a reason to make a move to acquire either player.”Jay, a Miami native, is a .285 career hitter in nine years in the majors. He made his debut with St. Louis in 2010 and helped the crosstown Cubs win the NL Central in 2017.Chicago cleared a roster spot for Jay by designating outfielder Charlie Tilson for assignment.
  6. The Boston Red Sox announced they have reached agreements on contracts for the 2019 season with 17 players Alex Colome Jersey , including outfielder Andrew Benintendi and third baseman Rafael Devers.Financial terms were not disclosed. One season after he finished second in the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year voting,Benintendi hit .290/.366/.465 with an .830 OPS of which established new career highs. He added 16 home runs, 41 doubles, six triples and 87 RBI in 148 games. The 24-year-old helped Boston win the World Series for the first time since 2013 by hitting .268 with four doubles and five RBI in 14 postseason contests.Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Devers turned heads in 2018. Although the infielder hit just .240 in 121 appearances, he recorded 21 round-trippers, 24 doubles and 66 RBI as well as a .731 OPS.LikeBenintendi, Devers played a key role in Boston's championship run. The infielder hit .294 with one home run and nine RBI in 11 playoff games last year. The team won't lose eitherto free agency anytime soon. NeitherBenintendi (under club control through 2022) nor Devers (2023) have reached arbitration. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper is gone from the Nationals to the Phillies after agreeing to a record 13-year , $330 million contract. But he’s is still a looming presence in Washington’s clubhouse as the team begins to move on without the star who played with them since 2012 at just 19.“He used to be right here,” third baseman Anthony Rendon said motioning to Harper’s old locker Friday morning. “And all you guys used to be in this corner all the time when he was here. And now even though he’s not here y’all are still in this corner.”And so it went with much of the talk in Washington’s clubhouse centering around the six-time All-Star and 2015 National League MVP, who had long been a face of the franchise. While it had been less than 24 hours since Harper had agreed to the deal, the Nationals had known for quite some time that he wouldn’t be wearing their uniform this season. And manager Dave Martinez acknowledged that being without him this spring training has taken some getting used to.“It’s been a little different,” he said. “I’ve had a really good relationship with Harp and we talked all the time. So in that aspect it is different especially for me.”No one tried to pretend like his departure wasn’t a big deal. They just choose to look ahead instead of lamenting what they lost.“Our focus is on us and what we need to do,” Martinez said. “I said that coming into spring training. Regardless of what happens with Harp, I’ve got to focus on the 58 guys we have in camp and get ready for the season.”Outfielder Adam Eaton knows everyone is wondering how this team will deal with the loss of Harper and fare without him. He said there will be no big talks or grand proclamations in the wake of the change. It will just be business as usual.“Just being a professional,” he said. “Everybody’s got to consider that. When you come into camp the guys that are surrounding you and the guys that are in the seats in the clubhouse, just play with them and get better with them.”They won’t have a lot of time to miss him. The first two of 19 regular season games against Philadelphia are scheduled for April 2-3 in Washington Marcell Ozuna Jersey , which is the team’s second series of the year.“It’s kind of tough that he’s going to an NL East team but we’ll get to see more of him,” Eaton said. “He’s had his part in putting the Nationals where they are and to be able to see him is kind of cool.”Teammate Trea Turner is bracing for what it will be like when he first sees Harper in his Phillies uniform and noted how strange it was to see Andrew McCutchen don another teams colors last season after nine seasons with the Pirates.“You see Andrew McCutchen leave Pittsburgh, it was weird,” he said of Harper’s new teammate. “It’s definitely going to be weird. He’s been here for a long time and making the change over there is definitely going to be different, especially in the division. But it’s going to be interesting when we see him over there.”Eaton agreed and said it won’t only be the Nationals and their supporters that will have to adjust to Harper playing in Philadelphia.“This is not just for Nationals fans. I don’t care if you’re a Cubs fan or a Padres fan or a Seattle fan, seeing Bryce Harper in a different jersey will be different,” he said. The Nationals, who made the postseason in four of Harper’s seven seasons, believe they have another good team this year and like the challenge they’ll face within a division they believe has improved from top to bottom — not just in Philadelphia.“For me every team’s gotten better Miles Mikolas Jersey ,” Martinez said. “If you look on paper at what everybody’s done, our division is going to be really, really strong.”That, they say is another reason why they can’t spend time worrying about Harper’s departure and need to move forward.“Our focus is on the here and now and trying to win our day,” Martinez said.

    Jose Pirela Jersey

ARLINGTON Jose Pirela Jersey , Texas (AP) — Before Ila Borders became the first female pitcher to start a college baseball game or pitch professionally in an independent league in the 1990s, the lefty felt almost like she was in a fight just to be on the field.“When I was playing, they tried to do everything possible to not let me play, or they didn’t want the media attention, and it was an uphill battle,” Borders said Friday. “Now I feel like people are searching and looking and trying to develop that talent. For me, that’s an awesome feeling and it’s great to see.”Borders is one of the coaches this weekend for MLB Grit, an inaugural high school invitational baseball tournament for 64 teenage girls from the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico that were split into four teams to play four games each.On Friday, which was International Women’s Day, each team got to play a game in a big league ballpark — Globe Life Park, the home of the Texas Rangers. The rest of the games will be at the Rangers MLB Youth Academy in Dallas.Ashton Lansdell, an 18-year-old pitcher/shortstop who was on Team USA in the Women’s Baseball Cup last summer, hopes to play college baseball next season.Lansdell has been playing baseball since she was 4 years old — “I’ve been told since when I was like really young to go play softball, I just straight-up said ‘No’,” she said — and started pitching when she was about 10.“My travel team needed some pitching, and they just put me on the mound,” she said. “They just threw me on there and I had good mechanics from watching people and being on the field so much. Ever since then, I’ve upped my game, my mechanics and velocity.”The right-handed senior for the varsity team at Wheeler High in Marietta, Georgia, now throws four-seam and two-seam fastballs, with a velocity of just more than 80 mph Kevin Kiermaier Jersey , plus has two different changeups, a slider and a curveball.Delaney Dunham, a 15-year-old freshman left-handed pitcher/outfielder from Dayton, Texas, switched from softball to baseball when she was 12 years old and her goal is to play one day for Team USA. She missed a tournament with her Barbers High baseball team this weekend.Along with the four games each team will play, the girls at MLB Grit will go through special developmental presentations this weekend, including tips on the collegiate recruiting process and information about careers within baseball.MLB is going into its third year of the Trailblazer Series for girls at its Compton Youth Academy in California, and last summer had its first Breakthrough Series for high school girls at the Dodgertown spring training complex in Vero Beach, Florida. What made MLB Grit different from those events was having more game competition for the girls.“Most of them are the only girls on their teams,” said Kim Ng, MLB’s senior vice president for baseball and softball development. “This is one of the few opportunities they actually get to compete against other girls, which is also why is fairly unique. “Ng said youth participation is one of Commissioner Rob Manfred’s most important agenda and platform items.“The first thing is No. 1, just to provide opportunity. No. 2, we need to shed light on these kids, on these young women and girls,” Ng said. “We think this is the best game in the world, and we don’t want to discourage anybody from playing it.”Allison Schroder is a 16-year-old junior from Fruitvale, British Columbia who played for Team Canada last summer and is on her high school team that competes in the state of Washington.“I’d love to play baseball at a college level,” said Schroder, a pitcher and shortstop. “Just to be able to play the game while getting an education has always been a good goal of mine.”Borders is among nine former and current players and staff from the USA Baseball Women’s National team instructing the girls. The other coaches are former MLB pitcher Marvin Freeman, infielder Homer Bush who was a member of the 1998 World Series champion New York Yankees and Morehouse College coach Antonio Grissom.Grissom, the brother of former big leaguer Marquis Grissom, was also part of the Breakthrough Series last summer and has been impressed by what he’s seen.“These girls are fundamentally sound Alex Cobb Jersey ,” he said. “In terms of the velocity and the strength, there’s a separation there. But in terms of the technique and fundamentals, they’re pretty sound. They’re going to make the routine plays, they’re going to throw strikes. Some of their secondary stuff is above average for their age, so that gives them a chance.” SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Colorado Rockies will be without the reliever who boasted he could strike out Babe Ruth, but they believe the bridge between their solid starting rotation and premier closer Wade Davis remains sturdy.Colorado is counting on a veteran bullpen group that includes Scott Oberg, Seunghwan Oh, Chris Rusin and Bryan Shaw to step up the way Adam Ottavino did in 2018, when his career year with the Rockies led to a three-year, $27 million free agent deal with the New York Yankees.“I think we have a lot of good arms and a lot of talented guys back there,” catcher Chris Iannetta said.“I think we can piece it together and be really good. Guys have good years. Guys have bad years. I don’t think anyone expected Adam to have the year that he had last year after the previous year. It happens all the time.”Oberg had a strong second half last season, Oh pitched well after being acquired at the trade deadline and the Rockies are counting on a return to normalcy by Shaw, Rusin, Jake McGee and Mike Dunn. The Rockies’ bullpen had a 4.62 ERA last season, 13th in the league and a number that must be improved upon so as not to squander the quality starts inherited from a rotation that includes Kyle Freeland, German Marquez and Tyler Anderson.Davis had a franchise-record and league- and career-high 43 of the Rockies’ franchise-record 51 saves last season, his first in Colorado.Ottavino and Oberg served as the primary setup men last year. Ottavino was 6-4 with six saves, a 2.43 ERA and a rate of 13 strikeouts per nine innings, thus the Ruth reference he made after signing with the Yankees.“He was great for us and that’s a tough piece to fill, but we are definitely capable of it,” Davis said. The right-handed Oberg, a top candidate to inherit more of Ottavino’s workload Wade Boggs Jersey , was 8-1 with 2.45 ERA and was scored upon in only four of his final 34 outings. He had a streak of 11 straight scoreless appearances in August and September as the Rockies moved to a second straight postseason appearance. He limited righty hitters to a .185 batting average.“Collectively, I think we are going to be fine,” Oberg said. “Those are some big shoes, but we have a really talented group down there. There is going to be all eight of us pulling together down there.”Oberg has made a team-high 210 relief appearances since his 2015 debut, but he is not the only workhorse returning.Shaw has appeared in 503 games since 2012, tied for the most in the majors, and he is looking to build on a second half in which he went 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 20 appearances after being reinstated from the disabled list July 11.The Rockies hope to return Shaw to the high-leverage role he had in Arizona and Cleveland before his outlier of 2018, when he was 4-6 with a 5.93 ERA. He has a career 3.43 ERA.“Hopefully, better performances by myself will be a big contributing factor to filling his (Ottavino’s) innings,” Shaw said.Shaw, a right-hander, spent time in the offseason at the Driveline Baseball training center in Washington, an outfit that is heavily immersed in biometrics and data analysis, spin rates, effective arm angles and more.Former Cleveland teammate Trevor Bauer has long been a proponent, and the two talked this offseason.“Got some good info,” Shaw said. “The info I got from them kind of correlated with some things we were seeing and talking about here. Hopefully the data we took from them we can implement this year and get going.”Oh was 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA in 25 appearances after being acquired from Toronto at the trade deadline.“I try to not think that we are filling the hole for someone just because that person left,” Oh said through a translator. “It is more about always being ready whenever the game situations calls us. So my job is to be prepared every day.”Iannetta sees “a ton of talent” in the bullpen.“You need guys to seize the moment,” Iannetta said. “There is opportunity back there to solidify yourself as a back-end reliever. Everyone has skills. Even if you had a bad year, that’s baseball. See who rises to the top.”
  8. Fernando Rodney Jersey , he’s going out on a high note. The Texas Rangers‘ 39-year-old third baseman has hit eight home runs this month, tied with Cleveland’s Francisco Lindor and the Chicago White Sox’s Daniel Palka for the most in the majors. Beltre also has 15 RBIs and 14 runs in 21 September games.Last week, Beltre moved into 30th place in major league history with his 476th career home run, passing Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Willie Stargell. He hit No. 477 Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.Article continues below ...“You look up at the record books and he just keeps climbing in every category,” Rangers interim manager Don Wakamatsu said. “There is no mystery why he’s where he’s at. The work ethic, the character, the intelligence, it’s everything he puts in.”Beltre, who has been dealing with a sore right hip, got a day off Thursday as the Rangers opened a four-game series in Seattle. He is scheduled to be used as the designated hitter Friday and Saturday and is hoping to play third base Sunday in the season finale.“It’s up to him to what he wants to do and is able to do,” Wakamatsu said. “I know he wants to be on the field the last day, we don’t know in what capacity. However he wants to finish the season, we’ll honor that.”Beltre has said he will spend a few weeks after the season talking with his family about his future.“I think that mentally Jorge De La Rosa Jersey , I’m ready to accept the fact that maybe this is it,” Beltre told “And if it’s not, I want to be ready, mentally, to go through another year of figuring out how to be productive and stay healthy. So, whatever the situation or decision might be, I’ve got to be mentally ready for whatever it’s going to be.”Beltre received a tribute in the Rangers’ last home game Sunday against Seattle. After the fifth inning was over, the team played a video of Beltre highlights on the scoreboard. Wakamatsu then sent Rougned Odor out to replace Beltre at third base and he received a standing ovation from the crowd and both teams.“There are some moments that are just bigger than others and that was definitely one of them,” Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager told “There’s a few guys in the league that just have the respect of every single person on the team, no matter what you’ve done or how long you’ve been around. Some guys are just unbelievably respected in this game and he’s certainly one of them for all that he’s accomplished and how hard he’s worked.”Beltre and the Rangers will face Mariners left-hander Wade LeBlanc (8-5, 3.55 ERA) on Friday. LeBlanc is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in four career appearances against the Rangers, including three starts. All three starts came this season and he has a 1-1 record and 2.76 ERA against Texas in 2018.The Rangers are set to send left-hander Martin Perez (2-6, 6.13) to the mound. Perez is 7-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 20 career appearances against the Mariners Taijuan Walker Jersey , including 18 starts. Three of those starts have come this season, when he’s 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA versus Seattle. It's time for a parade again in Boston. This time, it's the Boston Red Sox, who finished off the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games and earned their fourth World Series title since 2004.The franchise that broke an 86-year World Series drought with a four-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2004 has become quite adept at winning titles. In many ways, it is similar to the dominance the Red Sox demonstrated at the beginning of the 20th century when they won five titles between 1903 and 1918.The city has seen all its sports teams win titles in the 21st century, and Boston has become the city of champions. This could be a special year for the city's sports teams, as the New England Patriots are almost always in contention for a Super Bowl, the Boston Celtics may have the best chance of any NBA team of challenging the powerful Golden State Warriors and the Boston Bruins have a chance to play with the elite teams in the NHL and regain Stanley Cup glory. But Wednesday belongs to the 2018 Red Sox, a team that won 108 regular-season games, beat the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series, took down the defending World Series titlist Houston Astros in the ALCS before dispatching the Dodgers in the Fall Classic. The Boston Globe BostonGlobeThe #RedSox championship parade begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. Here a look at the route: ixo7ybzP9VThe parade route is fairly familiar to Bostonians, with an alteration to the starting point.Appropriately, the parade will commence at Fenway Park , the green cathedral of baseball. The champions will proceeddown Lansdowne Street, take a right on Ipswich Street and then a left on Boylston Street toTremont Street at Boston Common, per The parade then makes its way to Cambridge Street and will finish at New Sudbury Street. The parade gets underway at 11 a.m. ET.Red Sox fans are always emotional, and as the team established itself as the winningest in Red Sox history, comparisons with the greatest teams in baseball history have started.Whether they belong in a conversation with teams like the 1927 Yankees, the '39 Yankees, the '61 Yankees, the '75 Reds and the '98 Yankees is up for debate, but the 2018 Red Sox will be treated like heroes to those along the parade route.Fans are likely to show their appreciation for World Series heroes Steve Pearce, David Price and Nathan Eovaldi.Pearce earned the World Series MVP award as he hammered three home runs in Games 4 and 5, while Price transformed from a career postseason question mark to a legitimate stud as he beat the Astros once and the Dodgers twice in his starts. He also took the ball in relief on a couple of occasions.Eovaldi, who was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays during the summer, was remarkable during the postseason. He started two games for the Red Sox and pitched in four others in relief. He had a 1.61 earned-run average in 22.1 innings Brad Boxberger Jersey , striking out 16 hitters and walking just three while holding opposing batters to a .185 batting average.Included in Eovaldi's effort was a 6.0-plus effort in the 18-inning third game. Eovaldi ultimately took the loss when he gave up a home run to Max Muncy, but he calmly handled the pressure of holding off the Dodgers for inning after inning.Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez, the two biggest stars on the team throughout the season, will also get warm welcomes, and so should Jackie Bradley Jr., the ALCS MVP.Boston left-hander Chris Sale, the ace of the pitching staff, rallied his team in Game 4 with a fiery speech in the dugout. It would not be a surprise if the emotional Sale did the same at the parade to pump up the fans in attendance. The team that met and exceeded all expectations will get a lifetime's worth of memories as the city of Boston celebrates its latest champions.
  9. The Chicago Cubs had the right guy on the mound for a big game against the Milwaukee Brewers.Quintana pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning Chris Taylor Jersey , Victor Caratini drove in two runs and the Cubs beat the Brewers 3-0 on Tuesday to regain their two-game lead in the NL Central.Quintana (13-9) continued his mastery of Milwaukee in a huge spot, improving to 6-2 with a 1.60 ERA in 10 career starts against the Brewers. The veteran left-hander struck out seven and walked two in 6 2/3 innings in his second straight victory over Jhoulys Chacin, also winning at Milwaukee last Wednesday.“He always throws well, it seems, against the Brewers,” manager Joe Maddon said.Quintana received a standing ovation from the crowd of 37,017 when he departed with the bases loaded after a replay review awarded an infield single to pinch-hitter Hernan Perez. Justin Wilson then struck out pinch-hitter Manny Pina on three pitches, preserving Chicago’s 2-0 lead and drawing another loud roar at Wrigley Field.Jorge De La Rosa pitched a perfect eighth and Pedro Strop finished the three-hitter for his 13th save in 17 chances. Shortstop Addison Russell made an outstanding backhanded stop to retire Ryan Braun for the second out of the ninth, drawing a jaw-dropping reaction from teammate David Bote at third base.“My goodness,” Maddon said.Milwaukee (83-63) had won seven of eight, including a 3-2 victory in the series opener that trimmed Chicago’s division lead to one game. Chacin (14-7) pitched five innings of one-hit ball , but some sloppy play in the second proved costly for the wild card-leading Brewers.Ben Zobrist led off with a grounder that skipped by second baseman Jonathan Schoop for an error. With one out and runners on second and third, Chacin threw the ball into center field in an apparent miscommunication with shortstop Orlando Arcia while trying to pick off Javier Baez at second.“I got a sinker on my hand and just the ball sailed a bit more,” Chacin said. “But like I said, I was trying to set up the pickoff there and was just waiting for Arcia to get on the base.”Zobrist scored on Chacin’s error and the Brewers brought their infield in with Caratini at the plate. The backup catcher then hit a soft liner on the 10th pitch of his at-bat that went off the glove of a leaping Schoop for an RBI single.Caratini added a run-scoring double against Brandon Woodruff in the seventh, providing some sorely needed production at the bottom of Chicago’s lineup. It was Caratini’s first game since he had three hits and four RBIs in a doubleheader at Washington on Saturday.“I felt really good up there,” Caratini said through a translator. “I was just trying to have quality at-bats and luckily I had really good results.”Quintana threw 108 pitches, 68 for strikes. He is 3-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his last five outings overall.“We’ve been unable to solve him for sure,” Brewers manager Craig Counsell said.STATISTICALLY SPEAKINGBrewers star Christian Yelich reached safely for the 27th straight game when he walked in the fourth. It’s the longest active streak in the NL and matches his career high set in 2014.TRAINER’S ROOMCubs: LHP Jon Lester, who left his start on Monday night with lower back tightness, said he didn’t feel great on Tuesday, but he didn’t think he would miss any time. If the Cubs are rained out Thursday in Washington — the forecast is a bit dicey — they could adjust their rotation to provide more rest for Lester. … OF Kyle Schwarber (back) was unavailable. … RHP Brandon Morrow (right biceps inflammation) is scheduled for another bullpen session on Wednesday. “One moment at a time Ross Stripling Jersey , try to evaluate it afterwards and see where we’re at,” Maddon said.UP NEXTBrewers RHP Chase Anderson (9-7, 3.95 ERA) and Cubs RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-10, 3.71 ERA) pitch in the series finale on Wednesday night. Anderson is unbeaten in his last nine starts, going 3-0 with a 4.34 ERA since his last loss on July 14 at Pittsburgh. Hendricks is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA over his last three outings. LAKE BUENA VISTA , Fla. (AP) — Finding a job was pretty easy for Josh Donaldson. Proving he can keep it will be the tough part. The former AL MVP didn’t have to wait long for a new opportunity, signing a one-year, $23 million contract with the Atlanta Braves less than a month after the World Series ended.“I didn’t expect it to go that quickly,” Donaldson said Wednesday, the day before his first organized workout with the NL East champions. “It was my first time in free agency so I had something of an idea, but you don’t really know. I was very happy with the timing of it. They gave me the ease of the entire offseason to know which team I was going to be with.”At 33 and coming off two straight injury-riddled seasons, the third baseman understood his market value had changed, that he would have to prove he can play an entire season.“I wasn’t expecting much (contract) length,” he said. “I think you have to be realistic in what you’re looking for.. . . One year, I felt, was a great opportunity to come here and help this organization. I feel like if I go out and play well Trevor Hoffman Jersey , there could be a chance for more years after this.”After finishing among the top eight in AL MVP voting four straight times and winning the award with Toronto in 2015, Donaldson was limited to 113 games by a calf injury in 2017. Last season, due mostly to a shoulder injury, he played in just 52 games with the Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians.“I’m not a robot,” he said. “Everybody, if they play long enough, is going to deal with injuries — 2017 was the first time I’ve missed time due to an injury. Then 2018 was a lost season because of injuries. As we continue in our careers, our bodies are constantly evolving, and we’re just trying to be ahead of that and focus on being as efficient and as strong as possible.”Donaldson spent the offseason working on his lower body, trying to gain strength in his feet and toes and improve his mobility.“When I was 26, 27 years old Evan Longoria Jersey , I felt I could go out there and and tear a hamstring and the next day I could be fine,” he said. “The older you get into your career and the more evolved you get into your career, you know you’re going to have to deal with things a little better.”While acknowledging little familiarity with the former American Leaguer, Braves manager Brian Snitker knew Donaldson would be a good fit when he called him soon after the signing.“I can tell the energy with which he plays, the intensity with which he plays, and the focus on winning,” said Snitker, whose initial plan is for Donaldson to bat second, play third and stay healthy.Donaldson, who grew up in Alabama as a Braves fan, has a sense of coming home at a crucial point in his career.“I just have a little more to prove this year than probably in years past Andrew McCutchen Jersey ,” he said.NOTES: Although Thursday will mark the Braves’ first full-squad workout, the routine won’t be much different from the last three days, with everybody having reported. “We’ll have some team-oriented things in, we’ll start working on some fundamentals. That’ll be the biggest change,” Snitker said.. . . RHP Touki Toussaint and LHP Kolby Allard will face the New York Mets in Saturday’s exhibition opener at Port St. Lucie. BOSTON (AP) — An early stumble did little to slow down the Boston Red Sox.Boston scored seven straight runs after falling behind 3-0 in the first and beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 on Friday night.“We had a good night. Guys put in quality at-bats from the first hitter on,” said Xander Bogaerts, who led the latest rally for the Red Sox with a two-run triple in the first.Bogaerts added a pair of doubles and the Red Sox improved to 51 games above .500 at 87-36.Jackie Bradley Jr. had two hits, including an RBI double in the sixth, and the Red Sox won for the sixth time in seven games.Brian Johnson recovered after getting roughed up in the first, when the Rays tagged him for three runs on four hits and a walk. Johnson cruised through the next three innings and didn’t allow another run.“Whenever you give up three and we come back and score two, you kind of feel that momentum come back to our dugout ,” Johnson said. “That’s when you know you’ve just got to go out there and pull them through any way you can.”Johnson (4-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings before leaving after Joey Wendle’s double in the sixth — Tampa Bay’s first hit since the first inning.Wendle drove in two runs with a double in the first and Carlos Gomez had an RBI single for the Rays.“We felt like it was a good start here,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “You’re not going to get much better starts, three in the first, but unfortunately we just gave it back a little too quick.”Yonny Chirinos (1-5) took over for Ryne Stanek in the second inning and allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings.Bogaerts pulled Boston within 3-2 on a two-out triple to center in the first, then led off the fourth with a double. Eduardo Nunez drove him in with a single to tie it at 3-all.Bogaerts, who fouled a ball hard off his left shin before doubling again in the seventh, has driven in nine runs in his last eight games.“He put some great at-bats today and that was good to see,” manager Alex Cora said. The Red Sox added another run after Mookie Betts’ leadoff double in the fifth and a one-out single by Mitch Moreland, who finished 2 for 4.OFF THE WALLMallex Smith had a pair of hits for the Rays and a made a great catch in the second on a sinking ball hit by Nunez, running it down in shallow right just before crashing hard into the wall with his left hip.Smith held on to the ball despite tumbling into the front row and remained in the game after a quick visit from the trainer.“Really impressive play,” Cash said.TOUCHEIn the third Gregor Blanco Jersey , Bradley made a catch for Boston that rivaled Smith’s play the previous inning. Tommy Pham hit a deep fly ball that was headed for the wall in left-center until Bradley ran it down just in front of the 379-foot mark for the second out of the inning.Bradley had to lunge to get the ball and crashed to the warning track and rolled, avoiding a full-speed collision with the wall.“That changes momentum,” Smith said. “A guy makes a catch like that after you hit the ball that hard, it’s deflating.”CURVE CONTROLJohnson walked Pham with two outs in the first before C.J. Cron and Wendle hit consecutive doubles and Gomez singled to drive in Wendle for a 3-0 lead.Johnson said his first-inning struggles had mostly to do with struggling to locate with his curveball.“I was burying it when I wouldn’t want to bury it,” Johnson said. “Giving up three in the first is never the way anyone wants to go about it.”TRAINER’S ROOMRays: LHP Vidal Nuno (strained right hamstring) was scheduled to pitch two innings for Class A Charlotte on Friday night. Nuno has been on the DL since July 4.Red Sox: Activated Ian Kinsler (strained left hamstring) from the 10-day DL and started him at second. Placed 3B Rafael Devers on the 10-day DL with a strained left hamstring, retroactive to Thursday.UP NEXTRays: RHP Tyler Glasnow (1-2, 3.97 ERA) gets his fourth start for the Rays since arriving from Pittsburgh in the Chris Archer trade July 31.Red Sox: LHP David Price (12-6, 3.75) has allowed a total three runs over his last four starts, going 2-0 with two no-decisions.
  11. his batting stroke. When the New York Yankees arrived at the team hotel Thursday in Seattle after a charter flight from San Francisco Blake Swihart Jersey , McCutchen’s bags were missing.“They couldn’t find it. It ended up being here at the ballpark,” McCutchen said of his luggage, which was brought from Safeco Field to his hotel room about 8 p.m. on Thursday’s off day.Article continues below ...“I was just chilling in my robe the majority of the day, really,” McCutchen said.As for the batting stroke? After flying out to center field in his first at-bat Friday, making him 1-for-17 with the Yankees since being acquired Aug. 31 from San Francisco, McCutchen came up in the third inning with a runner on against Mariners left-hander James Paxton and hit a two-run shot to left-center field. It was his first home run for the Yankees.“I felt awesome. It’s the sixth game for me here, but it feels good to get a big hit like that,” McCutchen said after New York’s 4-0 victory. “I just hope something like that will get you going and start throwing the hits out there after that.”McCutchen led off Saturday’s 4-2 victory with a home run off longtime Seattle ace Felix Hernandez and will try to extend the streak Sunday in the series finale at Safeco Field.Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he felt good about the contact McCutchen made in his first at-bat Friday and mentioned that to the outfielder on the bench.“I think the at-bats have been good from him Rick Porcello Jersey ,” Boone said. “We’ve seen him obviously take some walks, and that’s been something he’s done all year (and) really throughout his career.”McCutchen said he wasn’t discouraged during his 1-for-17 stretch.“Because overall, I was having good swings, taking good passes at balls and grinding out at-bats,” McCutchen said. “Overall, I wasn’t frustrated. Just matter of time when the hits will fall.”The Yankees will not only be going after a sweep of the three-game series Sunday but also a season sweep. They defeated the Mariners three straight times in June in New York.Left-hander CC Sabathia (7-6, 3.54 ERA) is scheduled to start against Mariners right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (2-3, 5.56). Sabathia is 14-6 with a 2.57 ERA in 28 career starts against Seattle, including 10-1 in 14 appearances at Safeco Field. He’s 7-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his past eight starts in Seattle , allowing one or fewer runs in seven of them. Ramirez is 2-2 with a 3.66 ERA in 17 career appearances against the Yankees. In four starts, he’s 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA.The Mariners have scored three or fewer runs in five of their past six games, dropping 7 1/2 games behind Oakland in the race for the American League’s second and final wild-card berth.“It’s a broken record, it really is,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said of the offensive futility. “Some nights it’s a good pitcher, other nights we’re just not squaring the ball up. Unfortunately, the timing of this (slump) is pretty bad.” If Giancarlo Stanton had his way, Major League Baseball wouldn't have a World Series winner in 2018.Speaking to TMZ Sports, the New York Yankees slugger said he's "rooting for a draw" in this year's Fall Classic.Even though a draw in the World Series would leave a bad taste in the mouth of MLB fans Adam Jones Jersey , it's the best approach for Stanton to take.As a member of the Yankees, Stanton is essentially contractually forbidden from rooting for the Boston Red Sox. It would also be odd to root for the team that eliminated the Yankees from the playoffs. The Houston Astros eliminated them from the ALCS last year, though that was before Stanton was on the team.In the National League, Stanton wouldn't seem to have any ill will toward the Milwaukee Brewers or Los Angeles Dodgers. They never did anything to the Miami Marlins when he was playing there. But knowing how unforgiving New York fans can be, Stanton is better off not having any rooting interest in who climbs to the top of the MLB mountain this year.
  12. pitcher Sonny Gray as of Thursday afternoon , according to Fancred's Jon Heyman.Heyman reported earlier in the day that the Cincinnati Reds, the San Francisco Giants, the Milwaukee Brewers, the Oakland Athletics, the San Diego Padres, the Atlanta Braves and the Seattle Mariners are all among the teams that have inquired about Gray. Those reports come after New York signed free-agent reliever Adam Ottavino to a three-year, $27 million contract on Thursday, perHeyman.A 2011 first-round pick, Gray debuted with Oakland back in 2013 and quickly became one of the top up-and-coming pitchers in all of baseball. He was named to the American League All-Star team in his second full season in 2015 Reggie Jackson Jersey , finishing third in AL Cy Young voting following a season in which he went 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA in 31 starts. He spent the first four-plus years of his career with the A's before being acquired by the Yankees in a 2017deadline deal. And while that trade was made in an effort to bring a front-of-the-rotation arm to the Bronx, the right-hander's time in pinstripes hasn't been smooth.Gray went 4-7 with a 3.72 ERA in 11 starts following the trade in 2017 and went 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA (allowing five runs, four earned, in 8.1 innings) over the course of two postseason starts. This past season, he went 11-9 with a 4.90 ERA in 30 appearances, including 23 starts. He was demoted to the bullpen in August after posting a 5.56 ERA in 21 starts. He was not a part of the Yankees' postseason roster.Gray is just 29 years old, so even though he endured a rough 2018 campaign, there has been no shortage of interest in him around the league. If the Yankees do, in fact , trade Gray, it would mark just their latest transaction in what has been a busy offseason. This winter, they have acquired Ottavino, starting pitcher James Paxton, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and infielder D.J. LeMahieu while re-signing C.C. Sabathia, Brett Gardner, Zach Britton and J.A. Happ. TORONTO (AP) — Finally hitting his stride in the midst of a trying season, Marcus Stroman’s body has betrayed him in two straight starts.Kevin Pillar scored the tiebreaking run on an infield grounder in the sixth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays overcame another abbreviated start by Stroman to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Sunday.Limited to two pitches because of a recurring blister Yunel Escobar Jersey , Stroman battled through five innings before deciding he couldn’t risk further damage to his tender middle finger. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits while throwing 76 pitches.“I just threw sinker, cutter today because I couldn’t put pressure on my curveball or slider,” Stroman said. “I pushed it pretty aggressively. It was just at the point where I felt like if I continued to go, I would have to possibly miss my next start.”Stroman left Tuesday’s game against Boston after seven innings because of a blister on his right middle finger, walking off with the trainer after coming out to warm up for the eighth.Devon Travis had two hits and drove in a run as the Blue Jays won for the second time in nine meetings with the Rays, avoiding a three-game series sweep.Tampa Bay’s lone run came in the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Willy Adames.Jaime Garcia (3-6) worked one inning for the win. Danny Barnes got two outs in the seventh and Tyler Clippard got the third, stranding runners at the corners. Ryan Tepera pitched the eighth and Ken Giles finished for his 13th save in 13 opportunities.“We got pitched tough,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “Still not clicking offensively like we’re capable of.”Making his third start for Tampa Bay since being acquired from Pittsburgh last month, right-hander Tyler Glasnow allowed one run and two hits in five-plus innings.Pillar pinch-hit for Curtis Granderson and greeted right-hander Jose Alvarado (1-5) with a double. Travis followed with a tying single and Martin Maldonado Jersey , one out later, Pillar raced home from third on Randal Grichuk’s groundout to the catcher.Pitcher Ryne Stanek covered home plate but Pillar evaded the tag and was called safe. Tampa Bay challenged umpire Ryan Additon’s call but it was confirmed by video review. The lead was Toronto’s first of the series.“He left me a little window between his legs to try and get home plate,” Pillar said. “Sometimes you’ve got to gamble and it paid off.”SAVE MEGiles gave Toronto its first save in 19 games, ending a streak that matched the 10th-longest in team history.KEEPING IT CLOSEThe Rays are 22-28 in one-run games, while the Blue Jays are 15-12.MAKING MOVESFollowing the game, Toronto optioned right-hander Danny Barnes to Triple-A Buffalo to clear a roster spot for right-hander Sean Reid-Foley, who will make his major league debut at Kansas City on Monday. The Blue Jays still need to open a 40-man roster spot for Reid-Foley.TRAINER’S ROOMRays: Following the game, RHP Jamie Schultz was optioned to Triple-A Durham. RHP Chaz Roe (left knee) will be come off the 10-day disabled list Tuesday.Blue Jays: INF Yangervis Solarte (strained right oblique) was placed on the 10-day DL and C Danny Jansen was promoted from Buffalo. Jansen, who played in this year’s Futures Game , was batting .275 with 12 homers and 58 RBIs in 88 games at Triple-A.PARTING WORDSJansen was removed from Buffalo’s game Saturday when word of his promotion reached the dugout. Manager Bobby Meacham broke the news by telling Jansen “Kid, you’re going to the big leagues. I don’t want to see you again.”UP NEXTRays: Are off Monday. They have not named a starter for Tuesday’s opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees. The Rays have lost 12 straight series at Yankee Stadium.Blue Jays: Reid-Foley will pitch to Jansen, his former Triple-A batterymate, when faces the Royals on Monday. Reid-Foley went 12-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 23 starts at Double-A and Triple-A this season. RHP Brad Keller (4-5, 3.57 ERA) starts for Kansas City.

Good morning folks. Another week Youth Weston Richburg Jersey , another loss - so seems to be the trend. While last week’s loss was mostly infuriating due to the late game heroics of Aaron Rodgers, this week’s loss can be aptly described, in my opinion, as tiring. Virtually everything that could go wrong went wrong, including poor play displayed by all three phases of the team, as well as further injuries. It became physically uncomfortable to watch the game, as the pummeling seemed to drag on and on, without mercy.Where to begin? Considering that the Rams thoroughly demolished the 49ers, there’s really no good place to start. Jared Goff completed 75% of his passes, Todd Gurley scored three combined TDs, and Aaron Donald registered four sacks. The Rams special teams unit blocked a punt for a safety, and found success in the return game to give them advantageous field position - assuming that the 49ers even made it to fourth down without turning the dadgum ball over! The 49ers turned the ball over four times, which appears to be right around average for this squad throughout the season. Two fumbles, and two interceptions. When drives weren’t being killed by seven different sacks throughout the competition (ha!), they were being killed by handing the ball right over to opponent. Add in a failed fourth down conversion towards the end of the game, and it’s fairly apparent why this team was blown out in such an embarrassing fashion. Both Matt Breida and Adrian Colbert left the game with unspecified, but clearly lower leg injuries. These injuries should be updated later today. Maybe the only bright spot on the team was George Kittle, who had another productive game, which has been the story of his season. In fact, he was more or less the only productive member of the team , outside of kicker Robbie Gould. Kittle’s 98 receiving yards on Sunday put him over 500 for the season - which puts him on track for roughly 1200 yards assuming a 16 game campaign. Swearinger, released abruptly by the Washington Redskins this week after publicly criticizing the defensive coaching, didn't need much time to find a landing place. He's back in Arizona with the Cardinals, where he played part of 2015 and all of the 2016 season.Speaking in front of his new locker on Wednesday, Swearinger called it a "rocky Christmas" and acknowledged that he was wrong to speak out against Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Manusky and criticize the team's strategy in a 25-16 loss to Tennessee.Still, he was surprised, he said Womens Jaquiski Tartt Jersey , that it led to his release from the team."Just living and learning," Swearinger said, "understanding you know it wasn't my role to call out the defensive coaches even though we had a relationship. Me and the coaches had a good relationship. But it's just learning. I keep my mouth shut next time and just keep moving and play football, do what I do on the field."Swearinger acknowledged he's emotional and that controlling himself is difficult in the minutes after the game."I'm a very passionate player," Swearinger said. "I put my heart in this game. You put the camera in my face after we lose a game that we're supposed to go to the playoffs, I may say some things that I shouldn't' say. That's on me. I've got to control that and get better at that, but like I said, live and learn and keep moving forward. That's life."After the Redskins practice Wednesday, coach Jay Gruden said this wasn't the first time Swearinger had problems such as this."Yeah, repeat offenses. I've had many talks with him before," Gruden said. "Obviously I didn't get through to him. Again, that's my responsibility. At the end of the day we decided as an organization to move on."Swearinger had made significant contributions to the Washington defense. He had four interceptions (matching a career high), 53 tackles, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was selected as a Pro Bowl alternate."D.J. did some great things here without a doubt," Gruden said. "We wish nothing but the best but at the end of the day that's something that this franchise or any franchise can't afford to have. We've moved on."Swearinger said he got a nice welcome from Patrick Peterson and other players who were around three seasons ago. Swearinger played four games for Arizona in 2015 and was with the Cardinals the entire 2016 season, finishing with three interceptions, 64 tackles and two sacks. That success led to his three-year deal with Washington. The Cardinals, with the NFL's worst record at 3-12, were the first team that could claim Swearinger off waivers. He has one year left on the deal he signed with Washington.Arizona's first-year coach Steve Wilks said that claiming Swearinger was "a great move by us.""I don't know him personally but I like his play," Wilks said. "Scouting him Youth Dustin Hopkins Jersey , going against him, a very physical guy, tough, nasty, the DNA that we look for. Personality-wise talking to everybody in the locker room, everybody in the building, they love him."Wilks said he will talk to Swearinger about keeping any criticism in-house."I don't stand in front of you guys and throw coaches or players underneath the bus, that's not my style," Wilks told reporters. "That's what we would need to address. I don't have a problem with his opinion, but we're not going to have that opinion outside the building. He would quickly understand that."It's uncertain whether Swearinger will play in Sunday's season finale at Seattle or how much he figures in the Cardinals' plans for next season."I can only control what I can control," he said. "Tomorrow I'm going to come get ready for practice like I know how. If I play on Sunday, I'll be more than ready to play. If I don't, I'll cheer my guys on and do whatever I need to do to help this team win. ... I'm just happy to be back in Arizona."Wilks might not be the coach past this weekend, but Swearinger is planning to stay."I'm just ready to play, regardless of who the coach is, regardless of who the players are," Swearinger said. "I'm ready to play and I'm ready to win."The Redskins' Josh Norman said it's just more of the same for his team."Every week's been a circus for the last six weeks," he said.Notes: Arizona lost yet another offensive lineman when rookie tackle Korey Cunningham was placed on injured reserve. He's the seventh offensive lineman placed on IR by Arizona this season.Freelancer Bobby Bancroft contributed to this report.
  14. we have the matchup for Super Bowl LIII finalized. The Los Angeles Rams will be taking on the New England Patriots San Francisco 49ers Hats , a championship game that last happened in 2001 when the Rams were based in St. Louis. The Rams and the Patriots didn’t meet in 2018, but this should be a fun game given the potential of the offenses and the weaknesses of both teams. Many of you aren’t fans of either team being in the Super Bowl, but it should be a fun game nevertheless. It will be a rematch from when the then-St. Louis Rams and New England Patriots faced off in 2001 at Super Bowl XXXVII—the game where the legend of Tom Brady began.Los Angeles RamsA very, very good NFC championship game may have been ruined in the final minutes thanks to an awful pass interference no-call that could have won the Saints the game had it been flagged. Ironically, the Rams were petitioning for the officiating crew of the NFC Championship to be removed because of bias against the Rams. I’d say that can be tossed in the trash. While the Saints took an early lead and looked to be routing the Rams, the Rams bounced back with a touchdown at the end of the first half to cut the Saints lead to just three points. In the second half, long Rams drives and a hit-or-miss Saints offense let the Rams get the game tied up. The a Drew Brees interception in overtime along with some key yardage-chewers from the Rams sealed the deal for a 26-23 victory and punched ticket to the Super Bowl.New England PatriotsThe AFC Championship started somewhat boring then turned to flat-out bizarre. The Patriots held a small lead over the Chiefs for most of the game. The craziness happened almost halfway into the fourth. After a flubbed muffed punt call that would have given the Chiefs a touchdown, Tom Brady threw a crucial interception that led to a quick Damien Williams touchdown a couple plays later.. From there, a strange roughing the passer call and an upheld catch challenge helped put the Patriots into the redzone and back and forth we went with lead changes, touchdowns, and bizarre calls. The game almost was put away in the Patriots’ final drive during regulation San Francisco 49ers Hoodie , but Dee Ford lined up offsides during a Tom Brady interception that left the Patriots on the field. After the eventual touchdown and with 31 seconds left, Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field into field goal range to put the game into overtime. The Patriots won the toss and converted several third downs to get into the redzone and win with a Rex Burkhead run near the goal line. The Patriots won 37-31.It’s a game many are not thrilled to see, but it at least is two teams that haven’t met in the regular season with strengths and weaknesses that could compliment each other for something entertaining. I’m going to it with an open mind, we’ll see. The TDs will come. It's just a matter of time. The problem for the Giants (1-3) is they need something to happen soon. This weekend on the road against the Carolina Panthers (2-1) would be timely."It's just about when you catch fire," Beckham said Thursday. "But there does need to be a sense of urgency to play better, do better, execute Customized San Francisco 49ers Jerseys , win games, but there's definitely not a panic in my mind, in my body, soul, my heart. I'm not panicking."Beckham, who signed a five-year, $95 million contract extension in training camp, is having a good season coming off a broken ankle that limited him to four games last season. He leads the team with 31 catches for 331 yards, a 10.7 yard average. The only thing absent from his statistics is the touchdowns, and there is a good reason for that.Opposing teams are doubling him more often than not, and they are playing a lot of two-deep zone to prevent him from going deep. That's what Panthers coach Ron Rivera saw when he watched film of the Giants' offense."I do see where people most certainly are paying attention to where Odell Beckham is lined up , that's for dog-gone sure," Rivera said. "That makes a lot of sense to me."The Giants also have been without tight end Evan Engram since he sprained a knee in Week 3 at Houston. He helps open things up for the other receivers.Beckham said in a recent game the Giants got into the red zone and set up for a passing play. He looked up and saw a nickel cornerback covering him with a safety offering help over the top and a linebacker shading in his direction."So I joked with everybody, I was like: 'You know that I'm coming back off the ankle surgery,'" Beckham said. "I'm thinking maybe I'll get a chance, you have to prove yourself, and it's like they just jumped right back into what they were doing last year, doubling up and doing those things. We just have to find ways to get around that."The Giants have struggled to score points. They have been held to 15, 13 and 18 in losses to the Jaguars, Cowboys and Saints. They beat Houston 27-22 in their best game offensive, although they were held to seven points in the second half. What's been missing has been the big play. New York has nine passes of 20 or more yards and only two at 30 or better.Beckham's long was a 30-yarder against Houston. The running game is similar. The Giants have nine runs of 20 or more yards, with Saquon Barkley having eight of them San Francisco 49ers T-Shirt , the long being a 68-yarder against Jacksonville. It's the only run over 30 yards.Offensive coordinator Mike Shula, who was the Panthers coordinator last season, said the Giants aren't going to start forcing passes to Beckham, who had 38 touchdown catches in his first four seasons, the last being a four-game run."I think he's very talented," Shula said of Beckham. "He's going to get the ball. He's going to get us in the end zone. He's going to get in the end zone. More importantly, we need to score more, however we do it. Whether or not it's Odell, or Saquon, whoever it is. We just need to get down there number one, and finish drives."Beckham said the offense has just made too many mistakes. They move the chains on drives and then allow a sack or commit a penalty that puts them in second or third-and-long. It's a no-win situation. In the three losses San Francisco 49ers Hats , the Giants have gotten into the red zone six times, scoring three touchdowns. That's not enough for either the number of trips or the TDs.Beckham believes he will step up."I don't feel like I've been stopped, no disrespect to anybody, but I don't feel like I can be covered," he said. "I am just very confident in me, I've worked an entire offseason to be able to bring the best me to this team and I just want to be able to do that."NOTES: CB Eli Apple (hamstring) practiced fully for the first time since being hurt against Dallas on Sept. 16. ... LB Olivier Vernon (ankle) was limited. He has not played in a game this season. ... New York signed WR Quadree Henderson to the practice squad. He is a rookie out of Pittsburgh.

After the season Youth Patrick Omameh Jersey , New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman put the onus for the failed season on the defensive side of the ball. And there was some truth in that -- The Giants are stocked with talent at the offensive skill positions, but they need to invest resources to add talent to the defensive side of the ball. Some of that will surely be acquiring top-tier talent and playmakers, but they will also look to invest some of their (many) late-round picks in players who might be a good return on investment. Temple defensive lineman Michael Dogbe will likely fly under the radar in a draft class which is absolutely stacked with talent on the defensive front, but he could be the type of sleeper for which the Giants are looking.MeasurablesHeight: 6-foot-3Weight: 280ProsCompact, powerful lineman.Very strong. Interesting player who will likely need to prove his versatility consistently to have a shot in the NFL.”- Jon Ledyard (The Draft Network, Shrine Game practice notes)Does He Fit The Giants? He does. The Giants acquired quite a few defensive linemen last year who play a similar role to Dogbe -- that is, a defensive lineman who can line up across the defensive line depending on down, distance, and sub package. He isn’t as tall as players like Kerry Wynn, Josh Mauro, or R.J. McIntosh, but he is as powerful as any of them and uses his hands well to keep his chest clean. Lateral agility is an issue for him, and while he can show a good first step, he isn’t truly explosive. That might limit him as a pass rusher, but his power Aldrick Rosas Jersey , leverage, and ability to When I listed Dogbe’s strengths, the last one was “wears a single-digit number.” That isn’t a strength in and of itself, but when you see a Temple defender wearing a single digit, it conveys all kinds of things. It is school short-hand for a player who is tough, hard-nosed, has a non-stop motor, is always one of the hardest working guys on the field. Dogbe probably won’t have the pre-draft rise that players like Muhammed Wilkerson or Haason Reddick had, but he could be a sleeper to keep your eye on.Valentine’s Views: Thoughts on Ereck Flowers, Eli Manning after Week 1 Ereck Flowers played an awful football game Sunday for the New York Giants. There was a tripping penalty on the first play of the season. A holding penalty on the third. He allowed a sack and a team-worst 7 of the 18 pressures the Jacksonville Jaguars got in Eli Manning’s 39 drop backs on Sunday. Only two tackles allowed more pressures. Only one who played more than 50 snaps had a lower pass-blocking grade.Flowers’ overall Pro Football Focus grade was just 49.6, only 38.4 as a pass blocker. His play was bad. Anyone who watched saw that. And before you get all crazy about Giants coach Pat Shurmur defending Flowers on Monday by saying, among other things, “He had a lot of really good plays and he had a couple that he’d like to have back,” what is Shurmur supposed to do?The coach can see the film. He knows what he should, and should not, have seen better then you. Or me. Or any Twitter film critic out there. The Giants are stuck with Flowers for this season, though. He’s a Jerry Reese gift that keeps on giving. Or taking, whichever you prefer. He is in the final year of his rookie contract. He wasn’t ever going anywhere. He isn’t going anywhere now. Except back out to right tackle to try again.GM Dave Gettleman did a lot of things in the offseason. He couldn’t work a miracle and either a) find a taker for Flowers or b) make him a better player.Thing is, we know all that already. We know he wasn’t good on Sunday. Shurmur knows it. Flowers knows it. His teammates know it. The question is now whether Flowers can rebound from it, or if this was a sign of things to come. After not speaking to reporters on Sunday, Flowers did so Monday. I’m glad he did. Sunday Authentic Rhett Ellison Jersey , he left teammates to speak for, and about, him. Monday, he took responsibility.Flowers said he “did some good things, but I think there’s some things I need to work on.” He also said he is “trying to get better.”He called the pick 6 where he appeared to get beaten badly around the edge a “hard play.”“The linebacker came, I was supposed to pick him up. He came and then he left, so I stepped to get him and then I had to pop back out last minute. See what I’m saying? I had two people inside first,” Flowers said.He said he is well aware of the criticism heaped upon him from outside the building, but that “it doesn’t matter, I don’t lose sleep over it.”“I lose sleep over what these guys in my room and on this team think about me, that’s it,” he said. All of that is fine. It’s good. It’s what you would expect him to say. No one wants to be bad their job. No one wants to embarrass themselves on national TV. No one wants to hear constant criticism from the media or the Twitter bench jockeys. That isn’t fun. One thing, though, about Flowers’ remarks befuddled — and concerned — me.Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Calais Campbell, the man he was going to be assigned to block most of the day, is in his 12th season. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and was an All-Pro last season. There are voluminous scouting reports on the opposition provided by teams. Access to all the film you could possibly want to study. Yet, Flowers didn’t appear to know what to expect from Campbell on Sunday. In talking about the game-opening tripping penalty, with Campbell lined up against him, he said:“It was a quick pass so I jumped out there too fast on it. Next time I know what type of player I’m against, he’s not really a speed guy, so next time I’m won’t jump out so fast.”Umm ... what? With all of the information at your disposal how can you line up against an All-Pro in the season-opening game and not know what type of player you were going up against?GM Dave Gettleman talks about watching film until his eyes bleed. NFL players are known for studying hours and hours of tape each week — grinding away to find the slightest tendencies Youth Kerry Wynn Jersey , the slightest tells, the tiniest bits of information they can gather to give them an advantage on game days. Some, though, really never master the art of studying the game. And it is an art. You have to know what you’re looking for, and how to use that information when you find it. Those who master it have a better chance of mastering their craft and succeeding on Sunday. Those who don’t will forever be at a disadvantage.Maybe that answer in itself reveals at least part of the reason why Flowers has continued to struggle during his four seasons with the Giants.I have no idea what Flowers’ study habits are. Or whether Flowers, noticeably reticent in speaking to the media, simply didn’t frame his statement well. That remark about Campbell, though, raises more questions than it answers.Quick thoughts on the offensive line in generalYes, the Giants have to be concerned about the offensive line. Still, let’s remember that the Jaguars possess a dominant defense. The Giants were never going to dominate the line of scrimmage in that game.If you think the cavalry is coming to upgrade the offensive line, guess again. Look at this list of available free agent tackles and tell me who you have confidence in. The Giants may add someone, but there’s no guarantee any of them will be better than what the Giants have.Eli Manning wasn’t the problem on SundayIn the press room on Sunday evening and on Twitter or in the BBV comments ever since Sunday’s game ended, there are those who want to blame the loss on quarterback Eli Manning. To put it succinctly, that’s a bunch of nonsense. If you’ve been reading Big Blue View for a while you know where I stand on Manning. I’m in the pro-Manning camp. That doesn’t make me blind to his weaknesses. It doesn’t make me incapable of seeing when he messes up, or admitting he’s done so. In no way, though, can you blame Sunday’s loss on Manning. Unless you are so far into the “I hate Eli, love Davis Webb and can’t believe the Giants didn’t draft Sam Darnold” camp that you can’t see clearly. In my view, Manning missed one throw — ONE!! — that he clearly should have completed on Sunday, the post to Odell Beckham Jr. that could have been a touchdown. The pick 6? Watch the play.I haven’t a clue how you can watch that play and objectively blame the outcome on Manning. Flowers is beaten badly to the outside Curtis Riley Jersey , forcing Manning to step up. Patrick Omameh is tossed away like a dishrag by Abry Jones, who ends up right in the path of Manning’s throw and swats it into the air. What is Manning supposed to do about any of that?Manning’s not perfect. He didn’t play a perfect game. He took a pounding, pressured 18 times in 39 drop backs per Pro Football Focus, as the offensive line struggled. Let’s not forget the Jaguars have one of the NFL’s best defenses. The Giants showed some warts on Sunday. You can’t convince me that Manning was one of them. Here’s BBV quarterback guru Mark Schofield’s take on Manning’s Sunday:“They call it Overreaction Monday for a reason. This time last year the Ravens were back, the Chiefs were the best team in football and the Patriots had a host of problems. But it’s a long season and the results on a rainy afternoon at MetLife Stadium should be evaluated in context and used as a baseline. Did Eli Manning miss on a throw that might have changed the course of that game? Sure. New York caught Jacksonville in a Cover 4 look and got Odell Beckham isolated on a safety, but Manning’s throw was a step too far. Certainly a throw you’d like to see Manning make, but remember that this was a historically good pass defense a season ago, so making throws against Jacksonville is often a tough ask. The Pick Six was a disaster, and it started with Ereck Flowers up front. He got into his kick slide to try and match the speed of Yannick Ngakoue off the edge, but then stepped inside as he saw Telvin Smith come down to cover Saquon Barkley out of the backfield, assuming the LB was blitzing. He wasn’t, and that gave Ngakoue a free shot at Manning, who tried to climb the pocket and hit Barkley on a Texas route, but the pass was then tipped by Abry Jones and into the waiting arms of Myles Jack. That’s ... bad all around, but Manning did what he could when put in a difficult position. It’s not time to overreact, yet. “There were other missed opportunities, such as the fourth-and-6 throw to Sterling Shepard that came on a wheel route - a tough route to throw - that Manning underthrew by a step. If he hits either that throw, or the earlier post to Beckham, the conversation Monday morning is a much different one.”I will side with Mark, a guy who has played the position and understands it as well as anyone I know.
