Itâs no secret that PlayStation has a good lead over Xbox in its current generation, however it seems like the gap will be closed when both companies launch its new consoles next year. The Xbox One already has one big advantage over the PlayStation 4 i.e. backwards compatibility, a feature that lets users play Xbox 360 games on the current console.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has already mentioned that the console will have some sort of backwards compatibility but weâve heard nothing more since then. There is no news or even a hint of how robust the feature will be. Will PS5 let users play every PlayStation 4 game or will it be limited to a few? Is the backward compatibility feature only limited to Sony first-party games or will it be backwards compatible with the PS3, PS2, and PS1? These are questions that remain to be answered and it is making people uncertain whether the console will have any of the features due to Sonyâs reluctance to talk about the future.

Microsoft, on the other hand, is not shying away to talk about backwards compatibility on Project Scarlett- the codename of Microsoftâs next Xbox console. In fact, according to the head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty, the next Xbox console will have a massive advantage over the PlayStation 5 at launch.

While speaking to GamesRadar, Booty said âWe want â when you invest in Xbox â to know that youâre bringing that legacy content library with you. Itâs why we think weâve got an advantage with Project Scarlett, because our goal is that any game that runs on an Xbox One will run on Scarlett. Youâre not porting to a different operating system, youâre not porting to a different graphics API, youâre just running an Xbox game, right? So we hope that thatâs a big advantage in terms of our initial content library.â

Keeping the current state of things in mind, as of now, the Xbox clearly has an advantage over the PlayStation 5, however that could change next year. It could be possible that Sony will announce backwards compatibility for all previous generation games and will announce the feature in detail with the launch of the PlayStation 5.
