Times are changing, the air is heavy with an otherworldly feeling about it (quite literally for people living in Delhi-NCR) and if anything, it gives us a chance to acknowledge that we have come a long way since the time of our parents.

A very recent and positive instance of the same would be when a BSF constable named Jitendra Singh declined a dowry of Rs 11 lakh and married Chanchal Shekhawat by accepting Rs 11 and a coconut from her family.

This gesture has touched many hearts, and people are praising Singh for doing his bit to do away with the evil practise of dowry that is still prevalent in the country.

Talking to TOI, the bride's father 59-year-old Govind Singh Shekawat said, “I was shocked and initially thought either the family of the bridegroom wanted more money or they were unhappy with the arrangements. Later, we realized that he and his family were totally against the money being offered to them.”

As for the man himself, he said “When contacted, he said, “The day I was told that my wife-to-be had done LLB and LLM and is also pursuing a PhD, I thought she is good enough for me and my family. That day, I made up my mind to not take any dowry and my family thought we will declare this decision to my in-laws on the wedding day itself.”

Jitendra who works with the Border Security Force and is posted in Chhattisgarh at the moment, has found the support of his family in this move. His father, Rajendra Singh told the media that, “She is well-educated and thus we will further facilitate her in her higher studies.”

What a fresh breath of change this brings, doesn't it? We need more people like Jitendra around us.
