Whether you are a fresher, a recruiter or a working professional with a good amount of experience; LinkedIn is one platform that almost every individual is aware of and has taken help from at least once in their career. After all, it isn’t called the world’s largest professional network for nothing. Since LinkedIn paved its way in India in the year 2009, the company has grown remarkably here, making it the second largest market outside the US. It seems that even LinkedIn understands the potential of the Indian market and is trying to push for larger growth by introducing interesting initiatives.
Discussing the budding opportunities in India, Akshay Kothari, LinkedIn India head and Chief Product Officer, said in an exclusive interview with Quartz, “we wanted to figure out a way to level the playing field and provide a democratized opportunity in a way where it shouldn’t matter if you went to the IITs or you went to some college that nobody’s heard of.” Well, we couldn’t agree more since in India, even today, a lot of students are concerned about the college name more than they are focused on the course they want to enroll in. Akshay further added, “What we also noticed was that in most colleges there were at least a couple of people who were quite brilliant. They were self-learned, and, regardless of the college and the location, they had figured out a way to be strong in their fields.”

Akshay further emphasized on the fact that India produces nearly 8 to 10 million graduates every year with 1.5 million being engineers alone, but out of those, there are many who aren’t aware of the job opportunities available in metropolitan cities like Delhi and Bengaluru, especially the ones who are in tier II and III towns. What's more, there are several companies who don’t go to these places to hire and hand pick students. They only do so from a few “elite”colleges. So, LinkedIn is kind of trying to become a catalyst for those intelligent students who might be missing out on great opportunities.
When asked about the ever growing competition coming from other job portals, Akshay stated that they don’t call themselves a job hub; they are rather here to help individuals find the best opportunity and hone the skills of the employees. Considering India is a strategic point and one of the fastest growing markets, LinkedIn launched three major products in September – a job platform for fresh engineering graduates, a service pack for startups and a ‘lite’ version of its website that can work even on slow internet speed.
