Ever since its advent, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed as many as six teams getting their hands on the coveted trophy in the past 12 years. But, none of the teams even come close to the success and consistency shown by the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) over the years.

While Mumbai has won a record four IPL titles to prove their worth as the most successful team in the tournament, Chennai have managed to reach the finals on seven occasions to showcase their consistency in India's cash-rich T20 league. Last season, the two teams were head-to-head in terms of IPL titles before Mumbai edged past them to make it four wins.

Owing to their decade-long rivalry, the fixtures comprising Chennai and Mumbai are always an exciting affair. Thus, when the IPL schedule for the 2020 edition was announced, cricket fans were probably licking their lips while earmarking the opening contest, pitting familiar foes Chennai and Mumbai against each other yet again.

Locking horns on 19th September, while Mumbai will be eager to kickstart their title defence on a winning note, Chennai will be eyeing revenge for their heartbreaking loss in the last season's final. With the pulsating contest just days away, cricket fans and pundits have already begun speculating over the potential outcome of the game. And, Gautam Gambhir seems to have made an interesting claim.

Backing Rohit Sharma to outsmart MS Dhoni, the former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain has tipped Mumbai to get the better of Chennai in their opening clash. The left-hander feels that Mumbai's solid pace battery gives Rohit-led side an upper hand over the Dhoni brigade which seems a bit weakened in the absence of Suresh Raina this season.

"I feel the Mumbai Indians have the upper hand if you see the balance and depth of the squad. They have also added Trent Boult to their squad, who will give them a very good option. Because you want a bowler who can give you wickets with the new ball so that you can use Jasprit Bumrah in a different manner. So, I will want to watch how these two perform, not only in the first match but in the entire tournament," Gambhir said on the Cricket Connected show.

"I am very excited to see how Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah will be bowling together with the new ball. Because Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult are world-class bowlers and both of them are wicket-taking options in T20 cricket. A left-arm seamer who brings the ball in for right-handers and Jasprit Bumrah who is unorthodox," he added.

Highlighting the gaping hole left behind by Raina's absence in Chennai's batting order, Gambhir said: "It will be a huge challenge for Chennai Super Kings as they don't have Suresh Raina at No. 3, plus Shane Watson does not play much international cricket and has not played cricket for a long time, so how he plays against Bumrah and Trent Boult. We will also have to see with whom he would be opening the batting".

Will Mumbai's new pace bowling duo of Bumrah and Boult prove to be a little too much for Chennai's batting unit to handle? Can Chennai's replacements fill in the big shoes of Raina and Harbhajan Singh in their side? And, will Rohit manage to steal Dhoni's thunder in a game everyone's waiting for him to perform in?

Well, we'd have to wait for the matchday to get all the answers.
